From MarkB: Austrian Cuirassier and Nosferatu (41 Points)

Hi all,

It has been crazy here with work and life in general so it took me longer then planned to get these miniatures ready for you all to view.

First up is a 28mm Nosferatu miniature that I will use for a miniature game that I am play testing.

And last but not least are more 6mm Austrian Cavalry. this time it is 3 regiments of Cuirassier. We have the 1st, 4th, and 6th regiments. These are being painted up to add to my miniatures that will be used for General d' Armee. For now the first version of the rules but soon there will be a second edition.

For the points I should get:

36 x 6mm Mounted miniatures at 1 point each = 36 points

For one 28mm miniature at 5 points = 5 points

Grand total = 41 Points.

Take care all and see you again soon.

Great Mark, I really like your pale-faced Nosferatu and you really should be telling us more about this game of yours! The Austrian cuirassiers also look very much the part. Excellent job! That's another 41 points for you.

From BobV: Two SYW Brigades [Overdue and Returns] (320 points)

 Hello again all!

As I am sure some of you can sympathize, I have a lot of unpainted lead. My goal for this challenge is to finish off all of my unpainted 18mm Napoleonics. So far I've succeeded in finishing off a couple of brigades and I am within sight of reaching my goal with just a couple of brigades left. However, the monotony of painting only Napoleonics was risking my mojo and I decided that I needed to break out something else to keep my interest up and keep me going. I am aware that one might argue that the similarities between armies only 50 or so years apart are too minuscule to make any difference in interest, but I'll get to that point in a minute.

In addition to my Napoleonic armies, I have a decent collection of unpainted SYW armies. This portion of the collection goes back more than 30 years. My painted figures from this collection are old minifigs that were painted as a newlywed on our then new glass top coffee table (yes I painted at great risk). The remaining unpainted figures have resided in an old dusty box since the late 80's. I believe that qualifies for the Overdue Library Section Bonus. To rejuvenate  my painting spirit, I decided to break them out and see what I could do with them.

Here is the initial now completed batch:

There are at total of 12 battalions of 15mm Prussians and Austrians. (144 figures). Each side has four battalions of line and two battalions of grenadiers. I am unsure of the manufacturer but I believe that the figures are from Old Glory. I have no recollection of who made the flags.

SYW has always been one of my favorite eras to to study, paint and game. The era was at the cusp of modern organized armies and thus balances the uniformity of regimental dress and the variety of independent units. I enjoy the wider variety of uniform choices and the flair of colors and lace. It may not seem like it to some, but this set was much more fun to paint than the my last brigade of simple redcoats.

These figures are based for Tod Kershners's Warfare in the Age of Reason Rules. The rule set has always been one of my favorites. It was a gift from my father. He wasn't a huge fan of my hobby but I did convince him to visit the Emperor's Headquarters in Chicago once when he was on a business trip. He was much more excited about the sausage he found in the Emperor's Polish neighborhood than he was about visiting "some damn hobby shop" but he made the effort and that set of rules remains special to me to this day. Here are some closer photos:

These need a bit more work before I am completely happy with them. The flag edges need painting and some other minor clean up, but for the most part they are ready to go on campaign.

For Points I am claiming the following

144 15mm Infantry @ 2 pts    =                                       288 Points

Bonus points for Overdue Section of the Library =          20 Points

                                                                                  Total 308 Points

I'll be back again soon with more Napoleonics. Happy Monday.

Sylvain: Lovely stands of figurines! The old esthetics of rows of similarly posed miniatures has its charm. I will add a few points (12) for all the flags waved by your units. I enjoyed reading about your risky business of painting on the new coffee table and the good will of your father who found some kind of compromise between sausages and wargaming. Awesome painting job!

Iain W 28mm Napoleonic Austrian Salzburg Landwehr 130 points

Here is another Landwehr unit, Salzburg, next to no white but yellow facings. These are mostly Perry bodies with Victrix heads. The officer is a Perry plastic Confederate as are the drums, drummers arms and flagpole and arms with Victrix bodies.

A casualty marker for last weeks lower Austrian Landwehr  and a generic Austrian Infantry marker,as I decided I would like the Salzburg marker to be wearing the right hat!

Flag by Victrix once more, the older pattern used by Landwehr. I'm getting used to painting the flagpole as it doesn't take as long now!

Working on some Austrian cavalry next, lets see how we go,points 24 x 5 so 120, plus 2 x 2.5 for the casualty bases, so 125 to my total and the Napoleonic duel.

All the best

Iain

It's always a pleasure to have a close look at your work Iain, and this is no disappointment.  Love these Salzburgers (sic?) with their round hats.  Great basing too.  I also love the mixing and matching of bits between manufacturers and eras.  I'm throwing in a few points for the fall and conversion work.

However, shouldn't a Salzburg unit replace its drummer with a Nun warbling on about lonely goat herds?

From Iain W - 28mm Napoleonic Austrian Infantry regiment no10 Anton Mittrowski and infantry regiment no15 Zach (245 Points)

These have taken a bit longer than I'd hoped, 48 28mm Perry plastic Austrians, although as you only get one command in a box and I like to field units of 24, I've supplemented them with 2 Victrix plastic figures converted into a flag bearer and the other into a drummer with surplus Victrix French drum arms and drum, the officer is a rather more heavily converted Perry plastic dismounted French dragoon with Victrix arms,he is alright but for the additional six boxes I'm going to use the Perry plastic Confederate command sprue as you get an officer in a long coat, a flag bearers arms and pole and a drum with arms ,perfect for £1.00!

I still haven't got the white right, the red faced regiment has had another process (a top highlight of white) whereas the green faced regiment I've only used white on the straps  and I kind of think that might work better with the off white uniform? I also was wondering if I should have primed them black like the casualty figures I've done, they're converted from British casualties that you get with Perry's French heavy cavalry and as I have no intention of doing British  (my nephew is and you've got to draw a line somewhere!) so hacked them about a bit, I think they're good enough. So 48 x 5 and 2 x 2.5 gives me 245 points to add to the total and be my first entry in the Napoleonics duel, two more posts like this should more or less get me to my total, better get on with it,I've been thinking about my approach to painting white and I might be onto something, let's hope so as I have literally hundreds of the blighters to do!

All the best

Iain

Hi Iain - Napoleonic Austrians!! What a lovely sight!! These fellows look lovely, ready to march forward and keep that Corsican fool and his arriviste ambitions in check, where they belong! Very nice work on the conversions too! And as for painting the colour white, I am authorized by the Painting Challenge Gods to share a secret - NOBODY gets it right! It's always some kind of bodge, and I think BOTH approaches you have used here look excellent. I further encourage you to embrace that variety - after all, the Hapsburg Empire was a big place, and I doubt they ever managed a standard of white either.

Well done!
