From PaulSS: Bataljon Jagers No. 27 - 120pts

Last weeks small submission meant that I was able to crack on with a larger unit of Dutch-Belgian infantry for the Hundred Days collection.

The 27th Light Battalion was part of van Bylandt's Brigade, taking part in both the battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo.

All the figures are from the Front Rank range now available from Gripping Beast.

This may be my last post in this years challenge for the Saturday-Caturday Club, so I want to say thank you to Dallas for being our minion and sharing the regular cat pictures and updates.

The flag for the colour party is from GMB Designs.

The flank company figures have fancy-pants shoulder boards and a green over yellow plume.

I'm currently working on a handful more in skirmish order to add to the collection.

Twenty four 28mm foot figures should add another 120pts to my total.

As usual you provide us with such lovely work to enjoy, Paul. These Dutch-Belgian infantry are excellent, especially the flank company with their extra splash of colour. I hope they give you good service in your coming Napoleonic campaigns.

Thank you for joining the muster for this year's Challenge, Paul. It's always a pleasure to have you with us and to see what little gems roll off your hobby desk. Until next winter!

From PaulSS: Local History - 2nd Regiment Wisconsin Volunteers - 110pts

I currently live in Wisconsin in the heart of the Midwest and one of the most notable Union formations of the American Civil War is the Iron Brigade. One of its founding units was the 2nd Regiment Wisconsin Volunteers raised at Camp Randall, which is still there and although it's now the UW Badgers Football stadium, but there are plenty of Civil War era cannons on the grounds, so that is a bonus!

The regiment was heavily engaged with the Army of the Potomac and suffered more casualties as a proportion of its total enlistment than any other Union Army units.

The models are all from the Crusader Miniatures range are both characterful and a delight to paint. However, although the frock coats and 1858 Dress Hat are great, but they probably should have linen gaiters to represent the 2nd Wisconsin.

To give a bit of variety I did some of the men in the older issue dark blue trousers and some in later light blues, I also mixed it up a bit with the water bottle and strap colours.

The flags are from GMB Designs, and after previous efforts I managed not to get a chalky varnish effect on these ones, by the simple expedient of not sticking them on until after the matt coat!

Eighteen 28mm figures, plus the Local History location bonus should add another 110 points to my tally.

Wow Paul, I am more and more impressed with your work on this project - not only the quality but also the quantity of models is noteworthy! Always great to have a little variety to distinguish the old sweats from the FNGs (did they call them that in the Civil War?) and the flags look super as well. Nice historical notes here too, and congrats are due to your Badgers in finally overtaking the Golden Gophers last year in wins in their nearly 135-year rivalry! The Camp Randall Stadium entry on wikipedia led me down a bit of a rabbit hole too... JUMP AROUND!!

110 points added to your score!

From PaulSS: More Confederate Generals and Bushwackers - 80pts

A much more productive time this week with a trio of bases of generals for my Confederate troops and the rest of the Bushwackers finished.

The first command stand features General Robert E. Lee in conversation with Major-General Henry Heth.

I probably mounted Heth a little too far back on the base and Lee a little too far forwards. It looks like Heth is talking to Lee but avoiding eye contact, maybe some difficult questions about "Why sir, are we on this field at all?"

Lee's horse is my first attempt at a dappled grey, I think I need a bit more practice.

The next base features Lt.-General James Longstreet and Major-General J.E.B. Stuart already aware of Lee's ire at Heth, Stuart likely seeks out Longstreet.

If you saw the earlier post you'll note that the Longstreet model is actually the Hood model from the pack, I think it's a good fit anyways.

All the models of the generals in this post are from the two Perry Miniatures packs; ACW46 Confederate mounted Commanders and ACW47 Confederate mounted Commanders

The final command stand this time features Major-General George E. Pickett

This stand is finished off with a couple of infantrymen left over from the Virginia firing line that I did a few weeks ago. The figures are from the ACW39 Confederate Infantry command standing pack.

The standard is from GMB Designs. I noticed when preparing the photos that it's gone a little chalky, so before putting the figures away for a future battle I've given it a coat of gloss varnish to hopefully sort that out.

I grabbed the Hood stand from my previous post to show six generals, and attendants together.

The last four Bushwackers were also completed and based up.

These four are from the Crusader Miniatures ACW051 - Bushwhackers pack and are very characterful models.

These bases will serve as skirmisher stands for our Picketts Charge games, and on that subject I played my first wargame of 2024, travelling down to Galena - where General Grants house is - to play a Peach Orchard scenario with the guys. Lets just say my Union forces came second!

Here is a parting shot of the Bushwackers with the rest of the figures done last week.

Next week I plan to be back to painting Union troops for the collection.

This week, five 28mm mounted plus six 28mm foot should add 80 points to my total.

"Virgil, quick come see, there goes Robert E. Lee!" as the song went, that was one of the Snowlord's favourites that we used to listen to in his gaming room. More really lovely models here Paul, as I've said before I really like the style you've used to paint these. Just really crisp and clean. Eighty big points for you!

Iain W 28mm Grenadiers a cheval of the Imperial Guard (120 points)

Twelve more cavalry men of the Imperial Guard.  This time it's the Grenadiers a cheval, the premier heavy cavalry unit, the gods! I got these from Colonel Bill's an online second hand figure shop that is also present at shows, I've bought some lovely gendarmes from them before at Salute, but this was the first time I bought some online. They're venerable Connoisseur figures, proper old school, sold originally as 30mm mounted on Colonel Bill's own brand horses which are nice and chunky, I only got them because I'd seen our own Matts Napoleonic French cavalry over on his blue willow blog and quite fancied them and they've been fun, I had to add an eagle bearer and trumpeter, although they did come with an officer, but you've got to have a flag though right? Once more it comes from GMB and is lovely.

More Napoleonic French cavalry, I'm trundling along in this challenge as I managed to damage my knee and ankle painting and decorating the hallway and unfortunately the only time for physio is time that I would otherwise be painting so I am somewhat behind but I'll just have to see how it goes, I  have got dark age figures primed but I seem to be addicted to Napoleonics at the moment!
12 x 10 points for 28mm cavalry gives me 120 points to my total

All the best Iain

Ouch painting at 1:1 scale sound painful Iain, I suggest that you give that a rest and focus on the small scale stuff.  Loving these Heavies especially as they are the proper old school figures.

But get on to those Dark Age figures will you!

Iain W 28mm Chasseurs a cheval de la Imperial guard 120 ponts

This unit didn't make it to the big game but I've finished them now, it's a rather understated uniform I think but I do like them, since a double cataract operation in December I'm having to re learn how to paint and can't see close up like I did before, so I think they're alright but I'm not entirely sure! Like virtually all my Imperial guard figures these are metal and therefore second hand, the previous owner had picked them up second hand with their black acrylic paint worn off in various places and with only the eagle bearer apart from the rank and file, I converted/promoted one of those chaps into a command figure, the trumpeter was a Foundry figure ( part of a rather varied eBay French Napoleonic command purchase ) who matches his Perry cousins in size very well ,(one of the sword at the ready chaps took his place guarding the Emperor, the Foundry horse was definitely diminutive compared to the Perry horses) I cut his carbine off and gave him a spare plastic trumpet hand

The flags are by GMB designs and very nice they are too, bases by Warbase. Twelve times ten points for 28mm cavalry should give me 120 welcome points, next up? More guard cavalry I think!

All the best

 Iain

From what I can see the refurbished eyes are working fine.  There’s always room for Napoleons Guard Chasseurs.  I enjoyed reading how you sourced the figures, all the various riders seem to fit in fine.  Nice basework too.

You obviously inhabit a different clime than I if that’s a recent outdoor picture.

From PaulSS: 4th Maine Infantry Regiment (62 points)

Because of previous rules sets played, my collection of Union troops for the American Civil War contains quite a lot of stands of troops, but not a lot of command stands. As I'm now playing mainly Pickett's Charge or Longstreet I need to get some more command painted, but don't need that many infantry.

So, this entry looks like a small unit representing the 4th Maine Infantry Regiment, but once some of the surplus stands already in the collection are added it will be fielded at a more normal six to ten stand strength.

All the figures come from the American Civil War Union Infantry 1861-65 set of plastics, and I've assembled the infantry in this unit at right shoulder shift.

The pair standards are from GMB Designs.

Looks like a made a bit of a mess of basing though, that guy with the red neckerchief seems to be wandering off to his left, the sergeants need to get that sorted!

Twelve 28mm foot figures with two standards should add 62 points to the board for me.

American Civil War Duel Totalizer: 81 foot (464pts)

Napoleonic Duel Totalizer: 8 foot, 2 mounted (100pts)

Very nice stuff Paul. I have been contemplating a sort of ratio-adjusting effort on my Franco-Prussian War collection, painting more command stands to generate more units for the table. Glad to see these sorts of things ferment in the minds of others in the hobby too - and in your case, you shrug and take action! These look great, I love the blue on your federal troops. I've no doubt the one fellow marching a touch out of step will soon by sorted out by the right NCO...
