From GavinB: Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone of 28mm and Into 1/16th Scale (30 points)

Last week I was lucky enough to find a fair listing on eBay for one of the discontinued models from Miniart, the French Knight. Once I received the model I made a few edits to sallet with green stuff, as it was not in the style that was most common in the wars of the roses, and I was planning on painting this fellow as a retainer of Edward IV. I had never painted a model larger than 30mm so It was a real joy, I had a lot of fun focusing on all the little details and trying some new techniques. In the end I was pretty happy with how he turned out... so lets have a look!

It was a LOT easier to paint the Sun in Splendor on a 1/16th guy rather than a 28mm guy

Now, I do not know how many millimeters are in a 1/16th scale figure, I tried searching it up but to no avail, so to help you out in scoring this guy Greg,
I have placed a 28mm Perry miniature next to our soldiers legs that way you can get an idea of how many points to award. (really sorry to add another thing to you busy list of to-do's...)

And that wraps it up for this week, thank you so much for reading!

POINT TOTAL:

1 1/16th scale foot figure for ? points!

Happy Painting!

Hi Gavin - thanks for sharing this unusual project with us. I maintain that heraldry is hopelessly confusing  no matter what the size of the model is, and I have a lot of respect for those who attempt it (and understand what they are doing). I have a Hundred Years War project that is utterly frozen as I have zero idea how to approach the heraldry...

But enough about me! You clearly know what's up - right down to messing around with "green stuff" to get the right helmet. Good show!

In terms of scoring, we thankfully have some precedent here. There have been a couple of instances of 1/16 scale figures in Challenges past - they were scored at 30 points, so that's what we'll go with here!

Thanks Gavin, we look forward to what comes next! 1/6 scale perhaps? :)

From VictorC - 1/16 scale Miniart Athenian Hoplite (30 Points)

I've just completed Miniart's 1/16 scale Athenian Hoplite. This is a fully plastic kit with all of the parts on one sprue. Assembly was pretty easy but like most of their figurine kits it took a lot of plastic filler to cover holes, misshaped limbs and general seam lines. On top of that there was a lot of flash.  The figure was painted using acrylics, which is not normal for me. I usually use oil paints on a larger scale figure like this.  I think the figure came out pretty well.

I went with a darker skin tone because I believe the people back then spent more time in the sun and considering the geographical area it made sense.

I was rather disappointed with the decal as it took a lot of work and Microsol to get it to conform to the shield.

You'll notice the scabbard is held on with a piece of string. The kit didn't provide anything to attach the scabbard. I was lucky to find some string in my wife's sewing kit that seemed usable.

Wow, what a lovely big figure, Victor. I always have found these as rather daunting as while there is a lot of surface to work with there is also very little margin for error as the detail is so much more visible than smaller scale figures. The build for this sounds like it was a bit of bear, but you can't tell in the finished product - your labours have paid its dividend. The bronze looks excellent and the string for the scabbard was an inspired bit of modeling on your part (sewing kit for the save!).

Lets see, 1/16 works out to be approximately 120mm in figure scale, so we'll go with 30 points for this big Greek chap. Great work Victor.

From VictorC - 1/16 Scale Knight and some 28mm Figures (70 Points)

I've been practicing my painting skills using oil paints on larger figures. So these are my attempts at painting something larger than 10mm and with a completely new medium.  The Knight was bought some years ago at a Oregon Model Show. I finally got up the nerve to paint it.  I have no idea what the points would be for the knight.

28mm figures I'm test painting.

I received this 28mm figure for attending Historicon this past summer.

A Foundry WSS figure.

A Foundry Renaissance figure

Another Foundry WSS figure

Perry Miniature AWI figures.

The Knight by Miniart. 1/16 scale.

Size comparison between the 28mm and 1/16 scale

This kit was a pain to put together but was a joy to paint.  The decals on the shield and tunic were very brittle and torn repeatedly while trying to apply them.  I would not recommend this kit to anyone.

Great work on this disparate selection of periods and scales, Victor!

I think of the selection of 28mm figures, my favourites have to be the AWI infantry, especially that last fellow with his musket tucked under his right arm. The 1:16 scale knight is a tremendous bit of work in its own right. In particular, I think you did an excellent job on the blackened armour and heraldry - wow. I know for myself that I can be a creature of habit, and that it can be quite revealatory when I do manage to try something out of my comfort zone, so good on you for stretching out to experiment with some new scales and paints.

70 point for your efforts Victor - thanks for sharing these with us.
