From GregB - 10mm FPW French Line Infantry and Officers (40 points)

10mm French troops, ready for battle in 1870!

Hi everyone - sorry to be a long time between submissions, but work has been keeping me busy (which is a good thing). I am still painting stuff, but the whole take-photos-and-share part has had to take a back seat for the past several days. So I'll try and catch up a bit with this little submission! Here are more 10mm figures for the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. We have a unit of French line infantry, and some command bases with mounted figures. These are all 10mm figures from Pendraken.

Typical of my project so far - three bases to form an infantry unit.

The uniform of the French Infantry from the era of the second empire is just so fun to paint, a real "clincher" for my interest in the period and wish to game it. All the regiments with baggy red pants and kepis and epaulettes...just so cool. It is not a circumstance where you paint many units with "OK" uniforms to get to the cool ones...this is the uniform of the basic lignard, and it is already awesome (meaning the elite units are thus even more awesome). It is a lot of fun to paint.

So much lovely detail on these castings from Pendraken.

And it shows up so nicely, even in 10mm (although of course I am biased), because the sculpts from Pendraken are top-shelf, cunningly crafted and well-cast so there are details to work with, even at a relatively small scale.

Column formation to move forward...hope no Prussian artillery is nearby!

The infantry here would represent a Regiment for rules such as "Black Powder" and "1871", but of course such rules can scale up or down as you like, depending on the nature of the battle and scenario one wishes to play.

Mounted officers - I initially intend to use them as brigade commanders, but these can be used for all sorts of purposes.

The command bases are similar - the bases with a single mounted officer are meant to represent brigade commanders for "1871", which the base with the two mounted figures would be a division commander. I placed a Cuirassier on the base as I intended this specific one for command of a French cavalry division - but again many different rules allow for many different command bases in different ways - for my part, the more figures on the base, the more senior the commanders.

Two figures on the command base, to represent a more senior level of command - a cavalry officer, with the Cuirassier to keep an eye on things...

This will be fairly modest in terms of points - 30 foot figures and four mounted figures, all in 10mm, which should work out to 38 points. Still well-short of my goal, but hopefully I can still find time to get more done before the end of this edition of the Painting Challenge looms. Cheers everyone, and thanks for reading!

From PaulSS: [Sarah the Sorceress] Cantinière (25pts)

Hopefully Sarah the Sorceress will be willing transport me from Adventurers’ Landing to the Oubliette in exchange for a tot of brandy from the tonnelet of this cantinière.

The model is from the Brigade Games Vivandiers set and will join my French forces for the Hundred Days campaign, much to the delight of the Grognards.

A single 28mm figure with the Sarah the Sorceress bonus will add 25 points to my target.

28mm Napoleonics Duel Totalizer: 26 mounted, 116 foot, 3 guns, 1 boat.

OK,OK I'm late again...

but it's Friday still, isn't it? So a full weekend of figures, paint, brushes and glue fumes ahead. What's not to like?

From Curt: Sarah Bella & Felix Redux (35 Points)

As I need a lift to get to the Orc Pit, I'm hailing Sarah and Felix to get a ride on their spiffy motorcycle-sidecar.

These figures provide the dismounted version of my previous 'Sarah Bella and Felix' post.

The provided pack had one motorcycle included, making it difficult to offer two complete versions of the dynamic duo. In comes Bob Murch, the owner/designer of Pulp Figures, to the rescue. He was kind enough to provide me with another bike so I could do up two complete sets. Thanks Bob, you're a scholar and a gentleman.

Felix, true to form, is seen bounding from the sidecar, ready to cause havoc, while Sarah has her trusty .45 out, covering her impulsive K9 companion. Here is the 1:1 reference model pictured in full flow.

I think the motorcycle and sidecar is the cat's pajamas. I'd love one of these in real life, with the fixings; proper leather jacket, goggles and gauntlets (but probably not in asparagus green).

I'll claim the same points as the previous submission, so 35 total.

Next is the Orc Pit!

From PaulSS: 2nd Battalion, Kings German Legion Light Infantry (80pts)

Back onto dry land for my next entry in the Challenge with a unit of Kings German Legion Light Infantry for the Hundred Days Campaign.

The figures are all from the Brigade Games range and although a little slight are lovely models and really do take paint well.

The unit has mixed musket and rifle armed composition two of the five bases are armed with Baker rifles.

One of the rifle bases also has a bugler.

I've got a load more of these in the backlog and think that I ought to add another base with muskets to the group to bring them up to six stands.

Originally I planned to put the Officers and NCO's on the same stands as the infantry, but instead took the option of mounting them separately as I think that the KGL Lights will make a great force for Sharpe Practice.

This fellow is the very characterful musket armed sergeant.

Sixteen 28mm figures will add 80 points to my target.

28mm Napoleonics Duel Totalizer: 26 mounted, 115 foot, 3 guns, 1 boat.

From SimonG: 38mm(!?!) NecroDragon in the Lair of the Great Beast (50 points?)

Completing my navigation of the Chambers of Challenge it is with some trepidation that we enter the Lair of the Great Beast and encounter the NecroDragon! Clearly this is some sort of zombie dragon but also seems part mechanical, and maybe animated by some tortured human soul (reminds me of Michael Swanwick's Iron Dragon's Daughter which I can highly recommend).

Again this is a Ludus Magnus Studios Black Rose Wars miniature but while a nominal 38mm scale this little fellow is a good 150mm high and the same size in depth and width.

Considering the size he was very easy to paint with an emphasis on dry brush finishes and some work on getting a flame effect for the insides. It was also fun to finally have an eye big enough to apply the full "six step eyes" process too!)

With this I have completed my ascent to the Altar of the Snow Lord and await his benedictions in regard to my final offering.

Not sure how to score this points wise given its size but as a starter 20 for the chamber and 30 as a 40mm vehicle for a total of 50?

from RayR - The Chamber of Challenge - The Tomb [40 points]

My last entry on Level 2 of the Chamber of Challenge and I'm banging on the door of to The Tomb...

The Tomb: Paint a tomb, a burial-mound, a barrow or a henge. Bonus points for any ghostly guardian which lives, entombed, within...

A Tomb is what Curt asked for so that's what he's gonna get........well actually its a Crypt but hey ho!

This great looking Tomb comes as part of Debris of Wars Graveyard set. but can be bought on its own here, for the small price of £7.25

If you haven't checked out Debris of War yet please do so, they make some great items.

And for some bonus points Curt suggested adding the occupants of the Tomb, so may I present
Mabel and Mary the Darnley Twins who both died from drowning in 1688. Their grief-stricken parents buried them together and they still haunt the local cemetery to this day.

Mabel is a Belt Fed Girl from Col Bill and can be bought here, under the title of The White Ghost

Mary is also a Col Bills Belt Fed Girl and can be bought here, where she is known as Lenan Irish Banshee. Bothe figures cost £3.25.

Of course both my luvvly ladies can be entered into Sarah's Choice as well.

Now here's where I get stuck on the points, the Tomb measures 70mm x 60mm x 60mm
or 3 inch x 2.5 inch x 2.5 inch. So as its just under half a cube I'd say 8 points???
But I'll leave that call to my the Minion of the day?
2 x 25mm figures gives me 10 points, plus any spooky bonus as suggested by the Dark Lord himself???
And the 20 for the Tomb bonus.

Level 3 here I come!

AdamC: The Great Lady (25 Points)

I once more call on the aid of Lady Sarah the Sorceress with another miniatures form Griping Beasts.

This is one of my favorite miniatures in set.  We see a sturdy and solid noble woman of Middle Age.  Clearly she seems share a look with my previous entry Noble Woman maybe she's her mother or aunt.  Her stance and expression is clearly suggesting that the smelly raiders get off her lawn before she gets her husbands axe and see to it herself.
I feel this is her "formal" clothing, which is why it's so clean, she probably has something less fine for the hard work of managing an estate.
I love her jewelry especially the keys a prized possession of any married lady in dark ages allowing access to her house and any "treasures" it might contain.  On the Subject of treasure I request I lift to the Snow Lord's Treasury.  For points our Great Lady is 5 points for a 25mm figure and another 20 from Sarah The Sorceress.

From DaveS - Yet More Aliens (65pts)

I've continued working on my Watchers for Wild West Exodus.  First up, we have three more of the Veridian Chigoes.  These were painted in exactly the same way as the last ones, and give me the option of bringing the unit up to maximum size.

Next up, I finished some more of the Greys, this time a Drain Myriad.  These are basic foot troopers from what I can tell.  One of the more irritating things that I have discovered is that the models come in a minimum unit size of 5.  This would be fine if they didn't come in a mixed box with the other infantry type, also with a minimum size of 5, but a 6/4 split between them.  This would leave me with an undersized unit.  Fortunately, they have the option of upgrading one troop to carry a specialist weapon, and so I was able to steal one from the box of specialists to give me a minimum sized unit.

This should give me 3x54mm models and 5x40mm, for a total of 65 points.
