From KentG: 40mm Napoleonic British and French infantry & Musketeers (81pts)

Well here we are again with the 40mm figures,
once again these are perry miniatures, metals
these are part of a commission. It's been different painting this scale
but I'm quite pleased with the result

First up three British rifles, I actually have one more
to do but once again missed seeing him in the box of undercoated minis
I really like this uniform and have always enjoyed painting it.

there was only one French infantry figure in the box so maybe
there will be more in the future

then one British light infantry figure, really please with how they turned out

I finally finished the musketeers
they are quite cool especially when you add in the extras

Rochfort, Cardinal's guard

D, Artagnan

with the table setup I made some bread potatoes and a roast
chicken, even made some meatballs to go in the bowl on the far
table all thanks to green stuff

and then we have a few 40mm geese and a pig to help set the scene

And here they all are together and they are not playing well.

                    Points

                    5 x 40mm Napoleonic infantry @ 7pts = 35
                    3 x 40mm Musketeers @ 7pts = 21
40mm 2 x tables and chairs along with all the extras add to the tables = 10 pts
                    1 pig 3 geese 40mm = 15pts

From Millsy: Another smashing batch of 40mm kit from you Kent. I'm particularly impressed by the subtle colour variation and the neat piping on the rifleman's uniform. I think the furniture and animals are about the same effort as 28mm infantry so 5pts apiece for those. Great work!

From SidneyR: Mousquetaires du Roi for Glorantha (Outer Ring) [65 points)

It’s taken me a while to arrive, but this is my first post in Challenge XII. After a December which was busy with family things, my painting plans have been delayed considerably by a dose of the Covid lurgy. But, at long last, here’s my first post.

I’ve chosen to land on Glorantha, the planet of heroes. And this submission is all about the heroes of the King’s Musketeers, the Mousquetaires du Roi - heroes of the books and films set in the world of Alexandre Dumas.

I’ve been working with a couple of friends during the second part of 2021 on a set of rules set in the historical Paris of 1622, which is inspired by Dumas’ novels.  And these figures from Brigade Games and Wargames Foundry, in 28mm, are perfect for many different games and sets of rules with that background.

The figures in the photos are not actually musketeers.  (The actual musketeers were almost all painted during the course of last Autumn).  So this selection of the Mousquetaires du Roi are very much the support players for the 'leading characters'. They're the ruffians, henchmen, veterans and sell-swords who, in our games, in the novels and sometimes in history, cluster around the nobles and gentlemen who fill the dramas which we are all so familiar with.

I converted a couple of figures with some extra green stuff, in particular for one of the prone figures to which I added a greenstuff bandolier of powder flasks and some additional flowing hair. The figures were painted with Vallejo Model Colours, and based on Warbases MDF bases.

I kept the bases very plain, as we we have been using our figures both in urban settings and also in rural environments.  I felt that having tufts of gorse and marsh-grass on the base might not look ideal for cadet musketeers guarding the Porte de Nelles in Paris.  And ruffians with broken bottles or disinterested city cats sleeping at their boots might not look ideal in the countryside of Champagne.

As for the points:

10 figures (2 prone) equates to 9 figures (half-points for prone figure), in 28mm.  So ...

9 x 28mm at @5 points = 45 points
Plus 20 points for "Glorantha" on the Outer Rim
Total = 65 points

A modest total, but every Challenge starts with a first step!

*******
Welcome back Sidney! I know I speak for a great many in The Challenge who are so pleased to have you back with us for the painting madness once more. And as always, the top quality of your brushwork is extremely impressive, as is the warmth and interest you show in the background of your hobby work! A fine 65 points for you - looking forward to more!

From NoelW: Address to a Sorceress (45 points)

 “Sorceress! O, Sorceress!
We’re in trouble, as you might guess.
Please help us. We are in a mess.
We’re trapped at our last known address.

If you have a potion brewing,
If you’re suing, canoeing , wooing,
Please stop what (or who) you’re doing
To save us from carnage ensuing.”

There’s a sudden cloud of green smoke, apparently left over from a pantomime, obscuring a flurry of lace handkerchiefs, ruffs and feathers. A behatted figure staggers from the smoke, tucking his shirt into his pantaloons and blinking like a startled owl. He pulls his floppy hat down over his eyes, hunches his shoulders and stares round wildly, realises his jacket is on inside out, so pretends that’s how they’re wearing them in the Chambers these days, and wipes lipstick from his earlobe. Dishevelled as a disreputable rat, he skulks off into the sand dunes.

“Ray!” calls Getrude. “Is that you?”

No answer is the firm reply. Instead the vanishing figure is pursued by an angry female voice: “Where are you, Ray? I’ve found the blue potion. Where in the name of the Unpronounceable Epithet of all the Nonentities has he got to?”

Out of the smoke steps a woman almost dressed in what might once have been white. Abruptly, she stops short and scowls, furiously.

“Adventurers? Here? Now? Well that takes the biscuit.” (1)

“You’re not Sarah the Spectacular Sorceress of Seductive Supernatural Splendour.”

“I’m her reserve. I’m Mediocre Magical Mildred the Misunderstood.”

“But we summoned the Lady Sarah.”

She sighs.

“Unfortunately the epitome of all things enigmatic has a schedule clash. Something to do with fingernails and the latest colourways, I believe. You’ll have to make do with me. So, quickly now. I’ve no time to waste. Tell my why you’ve decided to spoil my – er – breakfast. Who do you want me to (a) turn into a toad (b) radically improve their dress sense” - she looked pointedly at Titchy -“or (c) sensitively but significantly modify their physical attributes?”

“None of the above,” says Getrude. “We need to get out of this place. If it’s the last thing we ever do.”

“Girl, there’s a better life for me and you,” observes Gnawbone.

“Woof?”

“Fireworks!”

The sorceress mutters: “So it’s come to this. I’m nothing but a glorified Uber…”

(1)   Or, presumably, “That acquires the cookie” for our readers on the far side of the Atlantic. But which applies in Canada? (2)

(2)   Also, “biscuit” means “twice cooked” but presumably “cookie” simply means “cooked”, so why do epicures in the US make do with half-cooked biscuits?

Only two figures this time. First is my Curtgeld. This is a floppyhatted Musketeer from Warbases. It’s rather a nice figure, though seems to me to be “true 25mm” rather than the 28mm we’re more used to these days.

For m’lady, I’ve painted a Frostgrave sorceress. I really love the North Star wizardly kits. I’ve made far more of these than I could ever reasonably use, and I've more to build! I like the way they paint up, too, and this one seems particularly successful. The only downside is that I couldn’t get my camera under the brim of her hat, so you can’t see how badly the eyes are painted!

If I’ve got this right, that’s 25 points for a female figure who looks like a sorceress, and 20 for the Curtgeld. Total: 45 points
