From Curt: A Gift to SidneyR - 'Sukiyaki the Inscrutable' - Chromatic Oni (25 Points)

Here's a classic old mini for you. 'Sukiyaki The Inscrutable', a Games Workshop chaos warrior, first released waay, waaay back in 1985, and then advertised in White Dwarf 81, September 1986.

I've done him as a Japanese demon, an Oni, or at least a flamboyant multi-chromatic one! As a bit of fun, I indulged myself with portions of his lacquered armour, using some riotous shades from Greenstuff World's 'Colourshift Paints'. After that, I thought a bone breastplate, helmet and sword would be suitably creepy, and provide a counterpoint to the rest of his flashy kit.

'Sukiyaki' is a gift to my good pal, Sidney Roundwood, who is madly working on his to-be-released samurai skirmish rules (which we've already been treated to a tantalising preview). I know Sid has a great affection for Aly Morrison's early Samurai models, so I thought he might enjoy 'Sukiyaki' capering around, causing mischief in some future game.

Sukiyaki should be worth 5 points, with another 20 for The Gift Shop.

- Curt

This is beautiful Curt, Sidney will be chuffed. Love the lacquer armour

From DennisC: Viet Cong Battalion 15mm for 'Nam (288 points)

Hello everyone,

I've been pretty busy this week, painting up 2x companies of Viet Cong each consisting of 10 stands of 4 men each, 2 stands of 2 RPG guys and 1 stand of 3 LMG guys which comes out to 43 models of 15mm, x2 companies is 86 models.

Battalion HQ is 2 stands of 4 men each, 6 stands of 2 civilians each, then 18 figures around 3 Mortars and 3 recoiless rifles.   124 models in total (248points), plus I have 5 bunkers (3 small 2 large) that I'll be conservative and count as 2x vehicles, so 16 pointsfor the 5 bunkers?

Total would then be 262 pts

This force is building into something special, although Dave will say they are too few and too small. Excellent work, you did under value them though

From DallasE - Angels and Demons (B+W and Sarah's Limo - 65 points)

No it's not a ropey Dan Brown novel... "Angels and Demons" is the subject of my first Challenge post this week. This was a small project to get some models ready for a game last week. Our group has been playtesting an excellent new fantasy skirmish game called "Idols of Torment" - you can read more about it here, but it's a very cool concept and a super fun game. You only EVER need 8 models for your force, but there's a lot of excitement in the gameplay. Anyway, on to the models...

I needed to paint two angels and two demons for last week's game - these are essentially statues that animate during the course of the game and create chaos for the players. The angel models are conversions - I went to the local FLGS and bought two winged angel-types but after I got them home, decided I didn't like them. So I went back and got two more female fighter models and transplanted the wings from the original models onto them.

As the fighters had braided hair that would've prevented the wings from going on, I had to cut off the braids and do new hair with greenstuff. I think it turned out OK.

The poses of the fighters are great, aren't they! I think the outfits look suitably angelic too. The models were painted with acrylics, wings were drybrushed mostly but other bits basecoated and highlighted.

Had to do some greenstuff work on this model too.

The demons came out of the box of shame - I've had these metal Khorne Bloodletters for donkey's years and they'd never seen paint. So I thought I'd drag 'em out and paint them for the Idols game.

Bare asses of course :-)

Skin was painted Mephiston Red and highlighted with Evil Suns Scarlet. Brass is painted in with Brass Scorpion, the horns and claws are Mechanicus Standard Grey highlighted with Thunderhawk Blue.

Doing his best Gene Simmons impression...

The swords were painted a bit differently - taking a cue from some LotR models I painted in the last Challenge, I did these blades with a Corax White drybrush and a wash of Biel-Tan Green. I think they look pretty cool.

So in terms of points, that's five 28mm infantry for 25 points, plus 20 points for the B+W Studio. I'll use one of the female angels as fare for a trip in Sarah's limo - next stop, "Historical Drama" - the limo ride netting me an extra 20-point bonus. So that's 65 points total. See you at the next stop!

Absolutely love these, the angels are fantastic, great work

From DallasE: 1:50 Afrika Korps Sdkfz. 7 Prime Mover (Historical Drama, 40 points)

For my second post today, we've been dropped off by Lady Sarah's limo at the Historical Drama Studio, where our subject is this 1:50 Sdkfz. 7 prime mover. Suits the studio of course because it's a model to be used in an historical game.

This model was originally a prepainted diecast from Corgi. I thought when I bought this model that it could enter service with my Afrika Korps force as-is, but I really wasn't feeling the paint job... that's OK, they're easy enough to repaint.

After masking off the windshield with tape, I primed the model black and painted the metalwork with Zandri Dust, washed with Agrax Earthshade. The interior is Mechanicus Standard Grey highlighted with Dawnstone and lightly washed with Nuln Oil. The upholstery and top are Mournfang Brown highlighted Steel Legion Drab.

As was typical on DAK vehicles, a small spot was left in original Panzer Grey and the DAK insignia applied (you'll see another such spot on the front offside fender). The paintwork was sponge-chipped with Vallejo German Camo Black Brown.

Of course I added a bunch of stowage from Value Gear. I've almost exhausted my stock of that so will soon need to order more. The stowage really adds a lot to this DAK model.

Here's a better view of the DAK insignia and number plate.

I thought I would include a pic of the 8-ton prime mover in its natural environment - they were often used as tow vehicles for the 88mm Flak 36. Painting this prime mover also motivated me to repaint the 88 - I lightened the colour somewhat as the original colour I painted it was kind of dark. No points for that though of course.

Painting this Sdkfz. 7 has prompted me to place another order with Perry Miniatures for some crew and passengers to use with this vehicle. You're welcome, Perry twins :-)

Anyway the points break down like this:

28mm vehicle: 20 points
Historical Drama Studio bonus: 20 points
Total: 40 points

Love this, Corgi vehicles do paint up so well, I have many in my collection. Normally I would like a specific film to go with this vehicle, I'm sure someone has made a movie about WW2. I'll say it's from the Dirty Dozen

From GuyB - (Ready Sunday) Under Construction and barely in time! (20 points)

Time is running out for my first entry, with the 21st cut-off point approaching fast. I have been working very hard on prepping Swedish for the Great Northern War (for a biopic on King Charles XII of Sweden). So far, I have undercoated and based a great many Swedes. A few even have paint on, but they aren't ready yet...

I sprayed them grey, then added a brown wash before dry brushing them white. This gives them a nice 'grey scale' colour ready for contrast paints/speed paints/inking. The models are all Wee Wulf miniatures (formerly Musketeer).

When finished, this will be an amazing force... but time is running out... so what to do... I have to post something. Oh myyyy!

Oh wait... I've recently started playing a 5th edition D&D campaign, and the games master has suggested we may use miniatures. He also hinted that some undead may be one of our first encounters. So, I dug out something suitable for generic undead 'nasties.

So, meet the ghosts. These are the GW variety, not the ones from Button House or Woodstone Mansion for our US cousins. These have been painted with a combination of contrast paints with a greyscale undercoat (the grisaille method - not slap-chop!!!).

These were fun to paint. I probably spent more time in prepping and greyscaling the models than I did painting them.

Points-wise, it's 20 points for the four models, plus a slightly spurious 'under construction' bonus - I will get around to painting the Swedes soon.

Journalists and their deadlines and tiny pictures (make them larger so I don't have to), I'll get Angus to take the Mickey. So the ghosts are beautiful and I love them. However you aren't getting an under construction bonus for figures you haven't finished, Miles and Tamsin will hold me down while the Snowlord removes my dangly parts. Paint the Swedes, these film types have high standards and don't understand how small the figures are, and you can have the bonus.

From StuartL - A Quick Trip - Lady Sarah's Limousine - 25 Points

Hello all,

This is just going to be a really short post this week. Despite having a load of free time, I haven't painted anything. I have spent the past five days in bed with a hacking cough and a fever. I wasn't able to pick up a brush, let alone hold it steady long enough to put paint on a mini. I took a test for Covid and the Flu, which both came back negative, I just had a garden variety virus.

However, I don't want to go for two weeks with no change in my score, so I have one model to present today. I painted this along with the previous batch of Void minis last week, but kept it separate for use as payment for the Limo service. I know we are supposed to submit three pictures per post, I had been planning to paint up some more figures to post alongside it, but...

The model is one of the standard Viridian troopers from the Void game. At some point in the past, I added some hair to the model by chopping the plumes off an old Dark Eldar figure from GW and cutting them up to fit on this figure.

I'll be using this figure to pay for my trip from the 1980's section to the Black & White area next door.

For points:
1x 28mm mini @5 = 5 Points
Lady Sarah's Limousine @20 = 20 Points.

Nothing for any of my duels here.

I'm off to lie down some more.

Hope you get well soon. She will do nicely for a limo ride, to be honest I don't think any one would dare refuse her.

From PaulO'G: Get thee to La Fromagerie! (40 points)

"Hold up lads! Something about that cheese shop smells a bit off..."

This week was Reilly's Birthday and I painted this building for his Normandy collection; a small setup he can been building over the last year as part of his 101st Airborne army project. Nothing too big, just a nice crossroads setup to breakup the table with some complex terrain.

Thanks indeed to Alan who printed it for me on his FDM printer; if Mile's infamous "Spreadsheet of Doom (TM)" can do the babbage calculations it, I propose to split the 'gift for other people' bonus as due credit.  I then added wall spackle to the sides and chipped it away in places to give a worn look, and a thin oil wash to give a slightly grubby appearance.

I tried to use bright colours (it is a shop after all) to fit what I recall of the Normandy shop style.
Matt W - I seek affirmation regardless of the facts here!

The setup is really starting to come together now. More importantly, Reilly likes it :-)

Overall this building has the volume of 1 terrain cube for 20 points, plus the Gift Store bonus.

Very nice, but don't get me started on buildings and points😂. Cheese is good, just had cheese, may have more shortly

From PaulO'G: War of the Roses Mercenaries (134 points)

Last Challenge I started a War of the Roses project which has progressed steadily this year, and I wanted to add to it this challenge with something different - European Mercenaries.

Sell sords from the content were features on all sides of the war, and while the Burgundian support to the Yorkists pretenders is the best known, a raft of independent companies from Flanders, France and elsewhere were engaged.

I've done mine up in bright livery to reflect their more flamboyant nature, and because that how I see those 'proto-landschnekts': advertising on the battlefield for future employers, as well as warning others of their prowess as a deterrent. Plus the bright colours pop nicely on my winter bases. While my rules usually have figure removal, pike units like these look so much better packed tighter so I went with 3 group bases for each unit

This unit has a secret weapon - a crossbow bolt to the face!

The flags are all hand painted naturally, using tin foil from the necks of champagne bottles. Yes collecting the raw materials is a drag but somebody has to do it (and who doesnt like a round of French 75s?!). The foil allows great three dimensional shaping and has some good strength to it. With the flamboyant theme in mind, I gave all their weapons pennants so no one would miss them on the field of battle!

Thats as much of a mini War of the Roses bomb that you'll see from me!
25 x 28mm figs for 125 points

Fantastic work, didn't know about the mercenaries and foreign support, know almost nothing about War of the Roses, about right for a Brit. Added a hand painted flag bonus so the I don't get a crossbow bolt to the face.

From RobinF: 28mm Gnome Undead : 45 points

This week I painted a selection of Fantasy 28mm models. Most are undead dwarf or gnome models from Midlam games and the rat wizard is a 3d print I bought on Etsy and mounted on a sewer cover base.

I use 30mm round lipped for all my bases and for the undead dwarf I was going for a bog-like green style with the base miniatures. The three skeleton Dwarf models were mixed in to look like bog mummies that have not aged as well!

Everything happened in a bit of a rush this week, I already had a plan to paint some Orlock for Necromunda but had a sudden blast of a requirement for the weekly roleplaying game I run on a Tuesday.  The players were just about to explore a level of a dungeon in a published adventure called the Abomination vaults. On the latest dungeon floor it was populated by Gnomish bog mummies which had been rotting away for 500 years. They are following the instructions of major non-player character that had asked them to tend a fungus farm to feed an army but their master was long dead and they simply continued the task whilst becoming one with boggy environment.

With a stroke of luck I discovered Midlam games do a range of gnomes and dwarf undead models, so I placed an order and the fresh metal has been painted with three days of arrival.

The Rat Mage model has been in the roleplaying game for the best part of ten Months as a player character.  Julie the player of the Rat Mage was happy to play it unpainted but I decided it was time to give it a coat of paint and as with the other models I painted it quickly using glazes.

I used the under shading technique with my airbrush first spraying a dark grey and then highlighting with a near white from the top. I then applied thin washes of Liquitex soft-body acrylic mixed with water and Liquitex glazing medium.  This was done in one 3 hour sitting and finally I added some Mig Europe base dust to the bases along with Lifecolor vegetable damp origin green.  A small amount of UV resin was dotted on the bases to make them look like they were inhabitants of a bog-like location.

Points break-down: 9x 28mm miniatures. 36points.

These are lovely, top work. I almost missed this post as it still said draft on it. Also your maths is terrible, 9x5 = 45😀

Sunday Minion Signing in

Afternoon chaps and chapesses. Hope you have all a fun week and are suitably chilling on this crisp Sunday. I've been away all weekend gaming and am now back to to quite a large list.

7YW Battle of Hochkirch - I was the Austrians and lost as I captured all my objectives but the Prussians got away

Spanish Civil War action, won this one but it was a close run thing

Enough of this waffle, on to the posts
