From DaveV: Star Wars Phantom class shuttlecraft (sci-fi) (45 points)

The best laid plans and all that. I had hoped to get more finished by now. Work and some sort of non-COVID bug have derailed my plans

Finally on the leaderboard with a model of a Phantom class shuttle, an example being seen in the animated TV series Star Wars: Rebels. It's a neat 3D print I obtained on eBay.

It's filament, not resin, so you can see the artifacts of printing. That being said, the parts were very clean and went together well. After  priming with trusty rattle-can Chaos Black, I airbrushed Vallejo Grey-Green from the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force paint set. Highlights and shadows were mostly done with the airbrush.  I added some details with brush acrylics, and light weathering with powders and pastels.

The model is usable for Star Wars Legion. For scale, the final photo shows the shuttle alongside a couple of  Star Wars 3D prints I previously painted (Farmboy Hero and Alliance Princess Commander, sculpted by War Bear Studios).

40mm scale vehicle (25 points) plus Sci Fi (20 points) = 45 points

Great looking shuttlecraft, Dave. The paintjob is very crisp and clean, and the subtle weathering brings the whole vehicle to life.

From Curt: Single-Seat Roadster for Maximillian 1934 (22 Points)

Hi All!

Up next for me is an additional car for my Maximillian 1934 project. This time we have a single-seat roadster in classic British racing green.

Similar to my previous tribekka, this model is from Eureka Miniatures. The resin was a little pitted, but it all went together without any fuss.

A quick blast of racing green with the airbrush and I was off to the races with brushing-in the highlights and other details.

For this jalopy, I've gave it a different front end, which sports twin machine guns. I also mounted a forward firing anti-tank rifle on the right-side cowling (a handy thing to 'encourage' open-lane driving), and finally a rear-firing Maxim for the odd parting shot (burst?).

For a bit of fun, I mocked-up a drum magazine from milliput for the Maxim simply for the looks-cool-factor.

With a bit of luck, I hope to get another two cars done, along with some motorcycles. Hopefully enough for a good-sized game.

This green road hazard should give me 20 base points, along with another 2 for the driver.

Thanks for popping in for a look!

- Curt

I'm really loving these Wacky Races style automobiles you're painting up, Curt. There have been quite a few car-wars type games over the years, but I think Maximillian definitely takes home the top prize for vehicle design.

The green base colour and the weathering are nicely done, and the decals (I'm assuming those aren't hand painted) add a few spots of visual interest to the machine. Lovely work.

From RayR - Almansa 1707 - MacCartney's & Breton's Brigade's 2mm - 42 Points

Three posts in 1 day!!!

And its more 2mm WSS goodness (no DaveD, they're not bits of card either)

Here we have 2 Brigades of English foot, MacCartney's and Breton's
Each unit consists of  240 2mm figures

In a previous post I hand written the names of each unit on the bottom of the base. Unfortunately my handwriting is like a 5 year old's. So after a quick experiment on MSPaint, I came up with these, the brown colour is a close match to the brown on the bases and they don't catch your eye too much. Which is what I wanted.
I did add a coloured block on the left of the label, to denote the country of the unit. Red being English.

McCartney's Brigade - Gorge's, Breton's, MacCartney's & Portmore's
Breton's Brigade - Mourdant's, Foot Guards, Lord Nassau's & Bowles'

Don't look too close, 2mm are hard to see let alone paint!
All the flags come from my NYW collection and were shrunken down to fit 2mm. Now they are larger than they should be, but in my opinion need to be.

So for the points
8 bases @5 pts each = 40 pts
2 bases @1/2 pts = 1 point
For a total of 41 points!!!

Lovely work, Ray. I love how you painted the eyes on each individual model. That takes some real dedication. The printed labels do look easier to read than the previous ones.
I've thrown in an extra point for the banners, even if they aren't scale accurate.

From RayR - The Artillery 2mm Almansa 1707 60pts

I was waiting for some figures to dry, so I could base them, so I thought I'd give some of the artillery needed for the battle a quick lick of paint. Somehow I ended up painting it all!
So here we have 10 bases, giving me 20 pieces of Portuguese artillery.

I looked high and low for what colour the guns should be, but couldn't find anything, so I went with natural wood.

With grey artillerymen

Next up we have the Spanish. 6 bases giving me 12 artillery

Blue guns and a dark blue uniform, can you see the red cuffs?
Me neither, coz I didn't paint them!!

Not sure why the French artillery look brown in this pic, they are red.
5 bases, giving me 10 artillery

Can you spot the deliberate mistake?

You might see it here better?
Answers on a postcard to..........

Lastly 3 bases of 6 English guns.

So that my friends is both sides artillery for the Battle of Almansa

24 bases @ 2.5 points each
Total 60 pts

Your Almansa project continues to grow apace, Ray. Grow in terms of number of models done that is, not the actual scale. They are still sooo tiny. Well done getting all of your artillery batteries for both sides done in a single go.

Steve K - Riders of Rohan and some tiny Bavarians 98Pts

 Now then,

This week has all been about the Cavalry, Big and small!

First up we have 8 Riders of Rohan, oldies but goodies, I really dont "need" any more of these, but when has that stopped any of us?

I had to make a few conversions here and there to this batch, as I was dredging the bottom of the box, and many bits were missing so you might see the odd Orc shield and axe here and there!

Next I thought id get some more of the never ending Napoleonics done. This time a base of Bavarian Chevauleger.

As usual, these are 6mm Adler miniatures, and are based up for Blucher.

I havent added flags to these, as I cant work out what they would have carried. It seems that they didnt have flags, or they werent carried on campaign, although the miniatures have a standard bearer, carrying a flag pole. I dont know!.... They can be added later if needs be.

Scores on the doors!

8 x 28mm Mounted = 80pts

18 x 6mm Mounted = 18pts

Total 98pts.

So thats all from me this week. Have a good weekend everyone.

Steve

Great looking batch of horsemen, Steve. The Riders of Rohan look suitably wild compared to the well dressed lines of the Bavarians. I'm impressed by how neat the Napoleonics look, if it hadn't been for the final comparison shot, I wouldn't have believed that they were 6mm. Nice work.

ChrisW - Vampires, film crews, Dr Koo, Cuirassiers, Pike & Halberd, Jazz band, Post Apoc & a palanquin [635 points]

So here's a surprise, I have a mixed bag of stuff on offer for this week.

Side rant, why is it that I only spot painting mistakes once I have taken pictures, they seem to escape my notice in the flesh as it were. Also to that point, how is it that with just a unit of 12 figures so many of them wind up missing something, like a black helmet band, or someone is missing some red etc.

Lady Sarah's limousine service [20 points]

Submitted for a ride to the casting couch we have Lisa from The Omega Man. (Crooked Dice figure) Now I have decided to not be coy about my movie tie ins after no one seemed to notice my Madagascar movie and Penguins of Madagascar movie references in an earlier post. Oh well. Lisa here is also part of my post apocalypse squirrel entry, see below.

Visit to the studio casting couch [20 points]

Casting couch studio time [6 x 28mm foot]

So for this tour we have a meeting between two movie moguls and the director, the camera crew. These are old school Pulp Figures film crew (1st version).

Vampire casting call [6 x 28mm foot]

A general call went out for vampires, many applied few were chosen.

So, a number of Dracula wannabes, one method actor with his own 'prop' and the mysterious Mr Shreck who had a hungry look to him...A mix of figures, the funky based figures are Blue Moon, others are Pulp Figures and I do not remember where the one with the 'prop' came from.

As for the ladies two made it through to the final audition (obviously pre-code days)

High Society jazz band [

Casting call also went out for some musicians  When Satchmo showed up with his band, well there was no point looking any further. The figures are by Eureka, a little under formed (mitts for hands) but Louis does look like Louis right down to the handkerchief in his hand.

Lady Sarah's limousine service [20 points]

For this ride I submit the Daughter of Dr Koo (Pulp Figures)

Visit to The Sci-Fi studio [20 points]

Post apocalypse [6 x 28mm foot plus]

Two different views of the end of the world, one by biological warfare, one by Apes! Either of these works fine for the gaming board that I built in last years challenge. All figures are from Crooked Dice. The apes do not entirely blend in with my other apes, but will do. Our two bio hazard warriors need some cowl wearing fanatics to fight but I may just settle for Mantic undead figures ala the Will Smith movie. I always wondered where Mathias and his followers managed to find all those cloaks after the end of the world. I cannot really see these wretched survivors sewing up all those outfits...

TV camera [28mm crew served equipment]

We also have a glimpse of the future, a TV camera from Crooked Dice. I think this came free with some kickstarter project, really not much use to me but it seemed to fit into the general theme of the challenge.

Two units of 20 Italian wars/Empire troops [40 x 28mm foot]

My usual amount of research went into these units, sorry. They are Old Glory figures from their Italian war range but will see service in my Warhammer Empire army. That is a bit of an explanation as to why they are so 'uniform'. I have seen other splendid examples of Italian Wars figures that have a wide variety of clothing styles, colours etc. Not so much here. These were my cheap alternative to the expensive GW figures, they are smaller and often less detailed, but they are only rank and file, and one needs a lot of them for an Empire army. A lot of contrast paint used here. The halberds are molded on and kind of thick and weird looking. The pikes are from a broom.

Palanquin [10 x 28mm foot]

Now here is an odd thing to own and I do not know why I own it or exactly when I got it. It is a model by The Tekumel Project and represents a slaver (I shall use him as a wizard/priest) riding on a Palanquin that is carried by eight (8) Qol. (serpent like creatures) It is on a 60mm by 120mm base.

The court of Dr Koo [8 x 28mm foot plus a gong]

The next palanquin/sedan chair is from Pulp Figures, it is Dr Koo being carried by two loyal servants. Not certain when this will ever be used in a game, but when it does get used it should hopefully make an impression. Also showen are some of Dr Koo's

VSF French Cuirassiers on Mars [12 x 28mm mounted]

Now this week just to be safe, I checked with my various 1889 sources to see how many French Cuirassier units served on Mars😀. Now while Frank Chadwick did not give any numbers, my own thought are that they did send some regular troops to guard the legation and to add extra bulk to their colonial troops. The appearance of these troops certainly impressed the natives.

These are Foundry figures from tier Franco Prussian war range. Apart from the red sand bases there really is nothing to suggest VSF. The French do have distinctly VSF troops and equipment so something normal seemed right. Again a lot of contrast here, trousers, jacket and faces.

Totals for this posting

  • 40 points for two limousine rides
  • 40 points for the two studio visits
  • 120 points 12 x 28mm cavalry
  • 415 points for 83 x 28mm foot plus/minus assorted scenic bits if they count
  • 10 points crew served camera

Total of 635 points this time around

(For the palanquin I figure the palanquin itself sort of counts as 1 figure bringing it to 10 figures in total)

Squirrels this time around

  1. Post apocalypse
  2. Tekumel Palanquin
  3. Empire Pike
  4. Empire Halberds Jazz Band
  5. French Cuirassiers on Mars

  8. Gothic/movie Vampires

Total of 15 for the challenge so far

Codpiece and feathers side challenge 200 points

Well it is almost 3 AM, I need to go to sleep. Hopefully I have done the math right please feel free to adjust accordingly as I am unable to ficus...zzzzzzzzzzz

That is quite a large post, Chris, I'm not sure where to start. You seem to have painted up an absolute storm over the past week and covered every genre and topic known to man. I mean, you've managed to paint up not one, but two different palanquins for different projects here. My personal favourites are the Cuirassiers, the bright colours and stylish uniforms are very striking.

Points wise, I've counted 83 28mm minis, but thrown in some extra points for the piano, gong and other assorted bits and pieces. For your post title, you don't have to list everything you've done, you can choose something short and pithy if you want. The spreadsheet of doom is reaching breaking point with that post title. 😀

On a squirrely side note, Empire Pike and Empire Halberds would count as being from the same army and therefore only 1 point for both of them, so I have amended your list to include the Jazz Band in place of one of those units.
