From RayR - Vogshere/Bureaucracy - The Clergy (65 points)

Vogsphere: Bureaucracy; Black Comedy

What the hell's Vogsphere were my first thoughts when reading the Bonus rounds this year, after a quick google search, I found out its the home world of the Vogons...

Not a clue? And I'm not inclined to find out anymore! Moving on to Bureaucracy, during last week's Covid, I had a Netflix rampage and watched all episodes of The Last Kingdom, one after the other, it took a few days, but I'm still here to tell the tale.

Watching the series, made me realise just how much influence the Clergy had over political decisions during this period of English history.

The definition of Bureaucracy is "a system of government in which most of the important decisions are taken by state officials rather than by elected representatives."

So these 9 figures fit the round perfectly. The figures were gifted to me by my old pal and old Challenge painter FranL. He sent these to me in the post a few years ago, so I thought it was high time I got them painted. They're from Conquest Games and sold as Benedictine Monks and Nuns.

Great work Ray! While of course we would be assured that such spiritual people are in no way bureaucrats, any short analysis will show that organized religion is indeed home to towering empires of bureaucracy! Nice to have these figures, they would make great accent pieces, or even targets/objectives, for a variety of different games in quite a number of different periods. Also nice to have a shout out from Fran! Well done.

From StuartL - Normal Normans Exceeding the Norm - 260 Points

Hello again.

For my second post today, I present a Norman Warband for Saga, or a part of one at least. I already have some models painted for this project, so this is largely just bulking up my force to allow for more options when I field them.

First of all, a few cavalry models. The mini in front holding the baguette?? is meant to represent Bishop Odo of Bayeux, William the Conqueror's half brother, who accompanied him on his attack on England. He became the Earl of Kent, regent of England and eventually died on his way to Palestine during the First Crusade. Accompanying him are two regular Norman knights.  Odo and the left hand model are from Foundry, the guy with the sword is from Conquest Games.

Here we have 8 crossbowmen, all metal minis from Wargames Foundry. The models are okay, but some of their faces are a little weird when viewed close up.

And to provide more ranged support, 10 archers from Conquest Games. As plastic Dark Age archers go, the figures are all pretty good, especially when compared to the competing kit from Gripping Beast. Conquest made the rather odd design decision to have the arms attach midway between the elbow and the shoulder, which made assembling these guys in believable stances tough. I do like that they included left handed options (The model in the centre of the front rank), something that most companies never bother with.

Though Saga doesn't allow Normans to take heavy weapons, the plastic infantry kit from Conquest includes some double handed axes, which I have used for these 5 chaps. The Normans were originally of Viking stock and as such would have been familiar with the use of these weapons. I'll probably just mix them in with regular troops, or perhaps field them as a special unit some time.

And here we have the bulk of the force, 22 warriors equipped with spears, swords and shields. Rather than faff about with transfers, I hand painted all of the shields in simple striped patterns. I then added a little weathering using a sponge. This had the dual effect of adding a bit more character to the patterns and also hiding some places where my lines weren't as straight as I would have liked.

And to finish, a shot of the force as a whole. 45 infantry and 3 cavalry models to bolster my forces. I do have some more cavalry models to do, so I may add some more to this warband before the end of the challenge, but I do have a lot of other things in my painting queue. At some point, I would like to refight the Battle of Hastings as I already have a large army of Anglo-Saxons and some Breton allies for these Normans. I'm torn between adding reinforcements from Footsore's metal minis or Victrix's new plastics as they both look superb. The realist in me tells me that I will probably get both.

Anyway, for my Challenge score, we have:
45x 28mm infantry at 5 points each for 225 points.
3x 28mm cavalry at 10 points each for 30 points.
For a grand total of 255 points.

Boom!  That's quite the force of Normans Stuart, if you've exceeded the norm does that make them para-Norman?   i am not a big Saga fan as I find them pretty gamey, but I know many enjoy them.

Bishop Odo is one the of the great characters of the Conquest.  Who knows, maybe a three day old baguette would be just as effective as the wooden club he carried at Hastings in order to avoid bloodshed!  Gotta love this many hand painted sheilds too, but you clearly need more knights.  I've upped the point total for the shields.

From Barks: Forgotten archers in the Oubliette (80 points)

I am spoilt for choice in my Oubliette... I chose these Conquest Dark Age archers which have been floating around for many Challenges. It is one of those times where you have to go to a forgotten way of painting to match your legacy style!

This grizzled guy is their de facto leader

Quite nice sculpts

From PeteF: Various Dark Age Horsemen (115 points)

These mounted warriors are for SAGA. They're a mixed bunch left over from other projects - I wanted some horsemen that could represent several of the Age of Vikings factions - so these might see service as Irish, Welsh and/or Norman mounted warriors.

The larger miniatures are from the Conquest Games Norman knights box. I've already done a few of them as Hearthguard (chainmail, fancy shields). The minis are OK - although it's hard to put the horses together without gaps showing. A couple of the bodies had gambesons so I did head swaps to make Stark mounted warriors (Game of Thrones).

The smaller ones are Warlord Games mounted Celtic Warriors. The horse and legs are cast in metal and the upper bodies and heads are from their Celtic warrior sprue. Although I'm reasonably happy with how they turned out, I'm not a huge fan of mixing metal and plastic. They didn't fit together well and, my eyes being dim, I also did not get 100% accuracy on fitting the right kind of top (tunic, chain mail or bare) to the right kind of bottom. The Celtic warriors sprue is  not that great for poses.

I experimented with different horse colours - including grey/brown and palomino recipes from the Painting War Dark Ages magazine. The shield designs are supposed to be neutral enough to stand in for any dark agey faction (apart from the Norman kite shield and the Stark wolf).

I'm looking forward to getting these barbarians on the table - 11 mounted for 110 points.

These are really great, some nice conversions. I really like the bases, differnt to the usual rectangles and with a nice bit of gardening. 5 extra points for some cool shield work

From MikeW: 23* x 28mm Norman Foot Soldiers (113 Points)

Well the last few days has seen a stutter in my painted output, with work commitments getting in the way and time taken over the weekend with family commitments. The former are frustrating but it pays my wages, the later are much more welcome and fun to be involved with!

Conquest plastic Normans, built and
undercoated with white matt primer.
So knowing that I was going to get fragmented time to concentrate on anything, I dug out half a box of Conquest Games Norman Infantry, totalling 23 figures, including a casualty figure. Like so many wargamers I have a number of armies that I like to keep adding to – The Normans being one that I want to get to a size that I can run a linked series of 1066 Campaign Games at some stage.
Five mail clad Normans

Once I had built these little guys, I started basing them on 2 pence pieces as normal but soon found that I’d run out of loose change in my pocket and in the ‘piggy bank’ in the kitchen! Luckily is sorting through the drawers that contain my lead mountain a few weeks ago,  I had stumbled upon a pack of MDF round bases, sized the same as a 2 pence piece, so I pressed these into service. Usually I prefer the weight of a metal 2 pence piece as a base to a plastic figure, seems to add gravitas etc. But in this case I through caution to the wind and put plastic on MDF!

Four Normans in Leather Armour
I also took a short cut with the undercoating by venturing outside, between rain showers, to spray paint the figures with white undercoat, I use a cheap matte white spray sold by a leading Car Repair & Spares shop here in the UK! This dried very quickly and I was able to start painting a variety of muted and some not-so-muted colours for clothing on these figures. Some had leather coats, which I did in a rich tan colour and some had full mail coats for which I used my favourite colour Vallijho’s ‘Oily Steel’. This was also used on all steel parts on these figures – such as helmets, swords and spear tips.
Five unarmoured Normans, including as standard bearer
Once main colours were blocked in , I painted the spear shafts, all leather work – including shoes, belts and shield backings, before add in in flesh to complete the figures. I say complete but really mean – before going over each figure and carefully fixing my painting mistakes to complete them!

Five more unarmoured Normans
I used Army Painter Dark Tone on the figures to give definition and shading and then added decal shield patterns to each before I applied a matte varnish to each figure to protect and seal the wash and shield patterns.

Final four unarmoured Normans, including the casualty figure

Bases were done in my usual manner with sand and electrostatic grass, then adding a few tufts to taste. Finally I painted the edge of each base black – which is my preference.

Hopefully I now have a week where I can plough into a couple of large 28-figure ‘Floppy Hatted’ regiments, one Spanish – using the new North Star 1672 Spanish Range and the other an Imperial (Holy Roman Empire / Austrian) German Regiment…

So I seem to remember that casualty figures count as ½ Points, as you only need to paint half the figure – assuming that they are lying down. So I have counted the Norman casualty as 2 Points, instead of 2.5 – I’m sure no one can be bothered with 0.5 of a point complicating everything. As a result my points calculation is, as below.

POINTS
22 x 28mm Foot Figures @ 5 Points ea = 110 Points
1 x 28mm Casualty Figure @ 2.5points = 2 Points
TOTAL  110+2 = 112 points

Great work on this stack of plastic Norman foot soldiers Mike. "Conquest Games" is another "new to me" sort of discovery, one of the things I enjoy so much about the AHPC.  I will now make sure to check out yet another manufacturer online later today :)

And you've done fine work here - the description of your process implies a relatively efficient, even speedy approach, but there is still a lot of thought and work to ensure variety in some elements and uniformity in others. And don't you love running out of bases? My hobby OCD compels me to have any figures in a given collection based on the same kinds of bases...knowing that some are metal and some MDF? How do you handle it??? :)

For points, I shall decree an extra point for the success of priming plastic figures between rain storms - 123 points it is! Does that seem silly? Well, that's what you get with Minions. We look forward to some 1672 Spanish!

From BrendonW - Stab, Loose, Stab, Stab (48 points)

This weeks submission is 5 x 28mm foot and 2 x 28mm Mounted and all plastic.

The inspiration for the two Arab Ninjas or Hassassins came from an historically based Novel and also 'counts as' Hero for Kings of War. When I proxy my Arabs as Elves they get access to a 'Hero' named the 'Master Hunter'. Comes with a bow most suitable for sneaking around and being a sniper perhaps. Two below have bodies from FireForge while one is entirely Gripping Beast except for an extra dagger from Conquest Games. Mr Swordy McSwordface is modelling another hand painted shield and I am happy to have him completed as he fills the last slot in a unit tray.

The last of the double ups for my Perry Miniatures. A heavily armoured pikeman and a horn blower. That's it for the heroic defenders of Black Beer and Bacon this season. I may have only one infantry body left in my stash but I will keep that just in case I get some crazy idea to make something of it.
A real mix of kits on these two. A head from the Knights, parts from the Light Horse and so on.

Two Normans with similar painted horses from Conquest Games to reinforce my Norman collection. Two plucky heroes to lead the charge or take the glory after the charge. The shields are hand painted.

Here is the Regiment of Arab infantry with the final hole filled with this posts Arab and previously painted Arabs with some from this Challenge and others from previous times.

cheers from Brendon
I won't be posting anything next week as I am away for a few days.
______________________________________________

Tidy bit of work on these figs, Brendon - the last Saracen looks great when put into the line with his compatriots, a terrific mass effect there with the added bonus of some splendid textiles and shields.

And it's always a good day when there's Beer and Bacon! Although I would DEFINITELY ask the ninja types to take a drug test before sending them on any crucial missions...

45 points for the figures, plus another 3 for the spiffy freehand shields!

Brendon W - Wednesday Wars with Mongols, Arabs and a Norman (70 points)

This weeks episode contains.... 7 x 28mm on foot, 1 x 28mm Cavalry and, 2 nasty War Machines. All of these except the Norman I actually built during the Challenge...GASP! The War Machines are one of very few small purchases I have made recently. Which is kind of good as I work my way through the unpainted hordes. Anyway...on with the show.

Group shot for this weeks Wednesday club team photo.
Three more Arabs on foot to increase my collection. This time though some experimentation with the bodies. The middle one has the body from a Gripping Beast Dark Ages kit and your right is a body from a FireForge kit. Seemed to work OK. The FireForge scale leather looks suitable for a Fantasy setting but perhaps a little bit of sculpting for some baggy pants would be better for the Arab look to match the rest. Shields are hand painted.

Next in the Wednesday warrior line up is this Norman from Conquest Games. A little bit of inspiration from the Beer and Bacon army to inspire the colours on the hand painted shield. Swords can become heavy so he has his one casually down as he look to his right to give his aching shoulder a little relief.
Among my Sprue horde I could not locate (after a quick search) the larger shields this kit comes with so he has a slightly smaller one. The smaller ones have a boss while the big ones do not.

Another mix and match with these Mongol War Machine crew. Heads and one arm from FireForge Mongol kits and Bodies from Gripping Beast Dark Ages. The metal staffs are for cranking the War Machine but I could make an arrow head for them instead.

Last but not least the weapons of war for the Mongol Crew above. A pair of nasty Bolt Throwers. These metal machines are a Mantic product fronted with plastic shields from FireForge. Been a long time since I built a metal kit like this and .....wow...lots of filling etc.
These are actually from the Goblin range but I have re-purposed them for a different army. They are mounted on 50mm square bases. Crew for these machines have no function in 'Kings of War' rules. They are really just decoration but I wouldn't have these weapons without a crew. Kept it minimal though with only two crew each. Just extra efficient and well trained I guess.

Cheers from Brendon

PS. Tunes Challenge....SLAYER
I am seeing them soon all the way down in Melbourne on their last World Tour. So looking forward to that. I also listened to the more chilled ZAKK WYLDE, 'Book of Shadows II', also chilled out with THE SWORD, 'Used Future'. I need to listen again to TENGGER CAVALRY...Mongol Folk Metal.
________________________________________________________

"Mongol Folk Metal"? There had better be throat singing to go with those awesome morin khuur riffs...
😁

So, let's see... 10 for the Norman, 20 for the two ballista thingies (and a pip for their splendid basing), and 35 for the footmen (plus 4 extra for the shield painting) - that's 70 points! You're on fire, mate!
