From BruceR; High Adventure; Lady Sarah's Limousine; (85 pts)

Another Wednesday and I find myself on the Casting Couch studio, wanting to travel to the other side of the Yellow Brick Road.  I bid farewell to Cpt M. Caine and attempt to hail Lady Sarah's Limousine service to a ride to High Adventure.

For the limo ride a Foundry Roman patrician female civilian.  Probably work in a few ages, maybe ancient to dark ages.

She is painted with a mix of contrast and regular paints.   Quick and ready to fulfill different roles on the table.

We arrive at the High Adventure Studio, no I'm working at sea level rather than mountain peaks.  Adventure on the High Seas.

I had finished the pirate and royal navy forces for my participation game at Adepticon and had purchased a 28mm Sloop for eye candy on the table.  It came quickly and I put it in the Q for painting.  When I opened the box I found I was missing a MDF section that held the masts for the sloop.  I emailed Firelock Games and received the reply it would be out shortly.  Well, I attribute the delay to the holidays and a Kickstarter they were delivering.  I did receive the parts a couple of weeks ago and set to the bench.  This is an earlier model so Resin (no fiddling about with plastic models) my choice.  Washed it up and started the painting.  I first undercoated in black.  I than, as I do, started hitting the web to find somebody who had done the sloop or similar to see who I could attempt to mimic.  I found a chap at The Plunder Den on YouTube.  I found a video of the sloop and another ship I think painted in Dutch colors, didn't matter I liked it and Pirates can do what they want.

I used an airbrush for the start and after, set to with paint and brush.

I wanted it to pop on the table and thanks to citadel paints (see below for the 20+ year old bottle of Firey Orange I dug off the shelf) I think it worked.  Amazing how paints last in old bottles.

Here it is beached.  As it will be at dock in a Pirate cove for the planned scenario, I didn't want to use sails.  I did want some of the rigging, but not tons so the game could go onto the sloop if players decide to go that direction.

For the deck I used airbrush paints applied by brush.   I wanted to get the planking to seem scrubbed by the crew of CPT Ocd...........  Scrub lads, scrub.  I used Vallejo Old and New Wood Effects.

Using standard brushes and make up brushes to apply the airbrush paints.  I really like out the deck turned out.  I tried to make the corners grimy and the other bits weather worn.

Here is a Foundry Rum tipper for size.  He will be on guard as the Marines attempt to land at night.  A dice roll will determine when the ol' grog is able to focus his eyes and see the incoming troop boats.

Scoring is difficult. The ship itself is a little over 12" long.  Another 6" spar forward and 14" mast high.  I added the 28mm tank for scale as well.  The sloop is slightly larger than 2 tanks.  So, I figured 20 pts is standard for a 28mm vehicle, I brought the sloop in at 40 pts.  I'll let Miles slash away if I'm over the top.  Fun build and hope to get it on the table in the near future.

Thanks for looking and cheers.

Points:

Limousine ride + 28mm figure        25 pts
High Adventure  Studio                   20 pts
28mm Sloop                                    40 pts

Total                                                 85 pts

Miles has been press ganged off to see so you'll have to deal with me instead Bruce.  I gotta say I really want that sloop, that's a great looking kit and you've really done it justice.  The wood effects are wonderful and the orange trim really works.  I am fine with 40 points, I see if we can deduct any over-gernous crediting by deducting from Miles' total.

I also really like that Roman lady, I may have to get myself some Roman civilians too.

From StuartL - A Smattering of Side Duels - Lady Sarah's Limousine - 182 Points

It seems that I have some catching up to do in my various side duels, so hopefully this post will help me catch up after taking an involuntary week off.

First of all, I have some additions for the Turnip28 side duel.

These two models are 'Toadies', the somewhat talentless junior officers in my growing Turnip28 army.  To signify their lofty rank, the duo are sporting the largest headgear they could find. There will be no mistaking them for the rank and file. The two figures are converted from Perrys WotR minis with a few extra growths added. The toady in red has a head from a British Napoleonic Hussar and arms from some Victrix British Infantry. The other model is all from the Perrys WotR kit. To make the growths, I driller a couple of holes in his back and inserted two short bits of wire. I then covered the wire with Vallejo Plastic Putty, adding a small amount to the shoulder of the other toady too.

Every good commander knows that artillery is the king of the battlefield and that is true in Turnip28 too. (I guess). So, I converted what is known as a Stump Gun.

The gun and most of it's carriage comes from a ship's cannon by Firelock games. The wheels and the ammo box were some spares I had in my bits box from some previous project or other. Finally, the crewman is more Victrix parts with some wire and putty growths on his back.

For scoring for the Turnip Side Duel, I have 25 Turnip Points.

I have previously scored a Squirrel point for Turnip28, so these models don't add anything to that duel.

I am also entered into the Skullz Duel, so time to add some noggins to my tally.

These terrain pieces are all from Reaper's Bones line. The two columns above stand about 7cm tall and feature small panels at the base packed with skulls and then a ring of skulls up near the top.

There are about 19 skulls on average in each of the inset panels. All of the terrain pieces here were painted in black and then given lighter and lighter drybrushes of grey. I added some brown wash to add some variety. In the case of one of the pillars below, I added some rose bushes to brighten it up a bit.

Of these pieces, the small, square piece in the centre has a skull on each of its 4 sides, while the central pillar has 2 skulls on each of its 3 sides.

So, in total this should add 178 skullz to my tally. Not bad for a days work. Points wise, these are nowhere near being even a small percentage of a challenge terrain cube, so I leave it up to my minion to score them. For scale purposes, the statue holding the shield is the same size as a 28mm figure, plus the plinth.

And that should bring me on to the Squirrel Duel.

First, a squad of 5 WW2 Japanese infantry from Warlord Games. These will be added to my Bolt Action army for the battles of Imphal and Kohima.

Next we have a brood of 5 Genestealers for Warhammer 40,000. There are rumours that Tyranids will be getting new models in the starter box of the next edition of 40K, so I wanted to get some of my older Nid models done.

Some battle-worn Tau, also for Warhammer 40,000. I quite like the Tau minis, but find their usual bright colours to not really fit the grimdark aesthetic very well. So, I have opted for simple colours and lots of weathering on the armour.

And finally 5 Teutonic crossbowmen for Saga. These models are all from Fireforge Games. They are quite simple figures to build and paint. I still have loads more to do before I have enough for a game though.

So there we have 4 more Squirrels for my scoresheet.

And finally, I need to pay up for another trip in Lady Sarah's Limousine. I intend to head over to the Casting Couch for next week's entry, so I have another model from VOID, this time one of the lovely ladies from the VASA range.

Just noticed that line of paint on her shoulder. I'll have to paint over that.

And that brings me to the end of the post, so it is time to tally up the scores.
24x 28mm minis @5 points = 120 Points
1x 28mm artillery piece @10 points = 10 Points
6 decorative columns = ???? (Help me, oh great and all knowing Minion)
1x Limo ride @20 points = 20 Points

TOTAL = 150 Points + ????

My side duels:
Squirrels - 15
Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Dwarves, Fire Giants, WW2 Polish, Daemons, Viridians, Vasa, Junkers, Turnips, Necrons, Tau, Genestealers, WW2 Japanese, Teutonics

Skullz - 186

Turnips - 85 Points

See you all next week.

That is an extremely eclectic output and the genestealers are fantastic. Still don't understand the turnip thingy but more great scratch building. the columns will score as 28mm figures

From Brettm Natives to Scifi (155 points)

On the next step on the map we hop aboard Sarah's Balloon

We have a famous captain who only needs one eye to be a badass

First time I have attempted actually painting an "eye" usually just do a wash and leave it. Couldn't do that on this model. I think it turned out great. Might be because its such a big eye though lol

I have been painting on this group off and on all through the challenge. Finally all finished up! So here we have these Natives from Firelock games.

 All of them grouped up
Decided not to do any shade on the feathers. Left them very bright.

Thought about basing them differently from the other blood and plunder guys I have. Ended up just going with the same base as the rest of the guys I have.

the "leaders" from what I can tell.

Point wise this is 24 Natives at 5 each comes to 120 points. Plus Sarah's Balloon of +30 and figure of +5. For a total of 155 points. Now where will this Balloon land...

Oi! You can't just hop aboard Lady S's Balloon without telling her where you want to go. That's almost hijacking! I'm sure that if you leave a comment here with your chosen destination, that will be OK.

Lovely work on these. Where is the badass captain from though? I'm sure others will want to know.

ps - I corrected your maths!

From MilesR: Pirates and other Stuff (325 Points)

This post is a bit on the "variable side".  It has been a while since I submitted a regular post but work has been a bit of a bother.

First up is one of the funnest things I've painted in a long time - a French faction for Firelock Games  "Blood and Plunder" - with ride, of course.  This is the starter set and provides 24 figures and a Captain.  All in glorious 28mm scale.

First up are 8 Flibustiers.  I decided to use the cast "ship deck" bases for these figures and was please with the result.  It did take some work to flatten out the bases.

8 Milices de Caribes - primarily a second line type of unit
4 Marins or French Sailors - these guys are the point for ones boarding party.

4 Boucaniers - sharp shooters to some extent.
And, finally, the Captain complete with flouncy yet stylish hat.
Now no Pirate faction would really be complete without a sweet ride and these French "gentlemen" have a very sweet one indeed - a Brigantine, which is the next step up in ships from the Sloop I finished earlier in the Challenge.
While ornate in design, she is fast, draws little water and packs 8 guns.
The model is a cast resin hull with metal and laser cut detail parts and was a blast to put together.  The flag was downloaded from the Firelock Games website.
Here she is loaded up with French crewman
Another shot - can't wait to get these guys on the table for a game.
Next up are 8 28mm Taliban figures from Empress miniatures - I was a few short for what I really needed for last year's "SOCOM and Sorcery" game and wanted to fill out the roster.
As with all Empress figures these are superb.

I thought these lads might need a place to stay so I built them a house.  This model is the "mud-brick house" plastic kit from Renedra.  Usually I really like the products from Renedra, especially their bases, but I found this kit both hard to assemble and difficult to paint - I just couldn't get a good texture.

Still, it's a very sturdy terrain piece and I can use it as a guide to build other types of buildings.

Also from Empress is a standard 28mm HUMVEE with a .50 cal machine gun.

A very nice model that was a snap to paint up.
Lastly there are 4 Dire Wolves from Acheson Creations.  Very nice models.
Who doesn't need more Dire Wolves in their collection?

So here's the tally

37 28mm figures/wolves = 185 points
1 Vehicle = 15 points
1 terrain pieces which filled 75% of the 6" cube = 15 points
1 Ship = I'll leave that the Curts discretion

Curt:
The ship is a good bit bigger than the Sloop which weighed in at a fair 85 points - perhaps something in the 100-125 point range?

From Minion Tamsin:
What a fantastic entry Miles. That brigantine is the dog's! Or should that be "le chien's" as it's a Frenchie?
If Curt gave you 85 points for the sloop, I reckon 110 points for this somewhat larger ship. Which takes your total for this submission to a stonking 325 points.
