From TeemuL: Elven Heroes (25 points)

My last entry for AHPC XV are these metal High Elf heroes from Games Workshop's LotR range.

There's Elladan and Elrohil (or vice versa), Erestor and then two different sculpts of Glorfindel. All painted with blue cloaks, golden armour with bluish mithril chainmail and green pieces of clothes to mark their nobility - my high elf infantry are coloured in similar way, but they don't have any greens.

They are bit rushed here and there, but on the other hand I'm very happy with some of the details or colours, the cloaks look quite like what I intended for example. The golden armour too, especially the helmets. They are all heroes, but they all from the same force, so limited palette was chosen. It might be easier to game with these if Elladan and Elrohir would have different colours for example, but not me!

Erestor and armoured Glorfindel are very similar, clearly sculpted at the same time, I assume. The newer Glorfindel is a different thing, very heroic and massive cloak compared to the other two. The cloaks of the brothers are similar to this one, probably from the same era. Although there are newer sculpts of the brothers, so I might be mistaken.

I believe 25 points is correct for 5 minis. Now I go to sleep and wake up tomorrow morning about an hour before the Challenge ends. I hope Curt and other minions can handle the barrage of remaining hours!

Lovely work Teemu. I really like saturated blues and greens you've used for these figures - it gives them a very regal air. As time passing from the release of the first LotR movies I am constantly astonished at the number and variety of models GW has created describing Tolkien's character, with some having many different models depicting them at different times in their lives. It's amazing. 

Teemu, thank you for your participation, your faithful and kind comments to others and your minioning of the Thursday crew. It's all very much appreciated by myself and others. I look forward to seeing you with us for the next edition of the Challenge.

From QuinnM: Just Variety and The Inconstant (205 points)

I took 2 weeks off painting as I was feeling burnt out but I came back strong this week. I have a number of different things from stormcast to skaven and the last batch of elves.

First we have the last few Stormcast I have unpainted. A lord relictor and a unit of reclusians. the paint scheme for them is really simple silver armor with blue, purple and red accent colors. they are painted differently for the rest of my stormcast as they are part of the more religious sub faction and i wanted to differentiate them 

Next we have a clawlord on Gnaw-beast from the Skaventide box. I wanted to try source lighting from the gnaw portal on the base but the little bit I did wasn't great so I left it at that as this is a commission piece for a friends Skaven army. 

On top of the clawlord I painted up a acolyte globadier for them and it was real fun as I got to paint up a glowing orb for the first time. It is not perfect but they are happy with the final look.

For the inconstant i panted the last of the space marines from my friend and in all honesty i'm a not sure about this one. he is panted up as the space marines 2 fan chapter the crayon eaters. where every panel of armour is a different color and to rely show this the clock is painted in a rainbow camo(yes i know that is a oxymoron) that a washed with a black speed pant. a lot of the colors turned out great most of them are hiding behind the gun. but the pink i had was not blending so i ended up mixing my own and got more of a salmon. so there is a before and after.) i could not think of something more inconstant than someone that can't stick to a consistent color. 

I did also pant up 2 more of the old goblin trolls. I used slightly different oranges as highlighting colors but you can't really tell in the photos. 

and lastly I have the last of the elven spearmen. I painted them in one batch over the whole week and boy do I hate batch painting. but they are done for now. we are not going to look at the 150 night goblins sitting in the to-be painted box. next i have the heroes and some horsemen for the elves and it will be my second fully painted army.

From QuinnM: Old World Elves (105 points)

 HI again 

This week I have more Elves, 20 of them this time, leaving we with around 45 of my spearman left to paint.  I am now on to panting the elves fresh for the 15-20 year old boxes, so I do have all the parts. I don't have much to say otherwise on them. 

I was also able to paint up one of my trench crusade models, a Sniper priest. This was a fun model to paint as I don't normally paint in a grim dark style so I had to mix black in to my lighter paints to get the look I wanted. 

So for points this week I have:

Sylvain: Ah, the charm of large armies! When you are done painting your Old World Elves, you should take a picture in parade, it will look impressive no doubt. Are you just using the standard GW paint scheme from the box art or are you designing your own? As for the Trench Crusade figure, a new incursion in the Grim Dark genre that seems to be getting lots of traction lately, you did a good job at conveying the depressing reality of this new dystopian universe. Well done!

From GregB - 10mm High Elf Heroes for Warmaster (11 points)

High Elf heroes for "Warmaster" - 3D prints, mostly designed by Forest Dragon.

We kick things off this week with...eleven points! Not exactly a "points bomb" - not even close - but I'll take what I can get! Here we have a small collection of High Elf heroes in 10mm size, mounted on round bases to serve as characters/heroes for the game "Warmaster". These are 3d prints, most of them (although not all) designed by the amazing "Forest Dragon".  There is a mix of warrior-type heroes and mages, a cadre ready to lead a High Elf army into battle on the table.

"Warmaster" is one of the very best "specialist" games GW ever released - the bones of those rules went on to serve as a foundation for a number of very, very popular rules. Plus, they are just great to play on their own. Those rules are so awesome in terms of how to mix the actions of the different troop types, of heroes and of magic. Heroes and magic have an impact, but cannot carry things on their own - but for all that, you can have a lot of fun with the hero figures!

When you have the right sceptre, one can read AND ride into battle!

GW's original line of metal 10mm figures for Warmaster were incredible, and for the most part are now very hard to come by. But holy smokes, have the 3d printer ever filled the void! Not only can you find equivalents...the current 3d prints are functionally even better IMO. These character figures are all 10mm, but they are just...they are amazing! All sorts of wonderful little details one can take a stab at with their brushes!

Does 3d printing have ANY weaknesses? Well...these resin figures do kinda maybe break if you drop them on the floor...one can say that about ANY figures, I suppose, but there have been, let's call it, "V2 requirements" after encounters with the hardwood floor in my house. No matter how much I swear, it seems you can't always fix broken figures...but here we have, at last, a group of non-damaged 3d prints!! Re-painting broken 3d prints is massively f*cking frustrating super-rewarding but it all works out in the end.

I have strips and strips of 3d-printed High Elf infantry and cavalry waiting for their turn under my brushes...one of the 10 "top priorities" I had lined up for this edition of the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge. Will they get any paint this year? We'll see...but I'm glad to get these heroes finished off at last. 

This fellow could be a mage, or some kind of sword-master type hero as well. 

Scoring is obviously super-modest for this post, but hey, points are points! We have three mounted 10mm figures, and two 10mm foot figures, for a grand total of, er, 11 points! Hey, progress, is progress. Hopefully the next post I have for today will increase the score counter a bit more...

QuinnM GW- High Elf- 45 points

So we have already seen some beautiful painted old GW High elves from MikeW. Now i submit my own not as beautiful elves. I painted 1-2 colors a day over the last week. I will be batch painting 80 elven spearmen over the challenge and hope to improve.

9x28mm footman = 45 points

I got a number of old boxes of High elves that were sitting in a family friend's garage for probably 10+years(but some are older than me). As such I have a unit of spearmen missing their shields and decided to start with them.

I took inspiration for my paint scheme from the box(and what pants I have) as I wanted to paint them to match older painting conventions so I did a simple sand base and goblin green edge.

From Rhunt - Fantasy and Sci-Fi ( 140 pts)

This week is a mix of Sci-fi (Star Wars Legion) and Sci-Fi. First off I'm finally done with the elves. This is the wizard for them. She was really hard to paint.

There is so much detail on this model. I tried really hard to make her look right but she was very hard. Dad showed me a sculpture where it looks like she is wearing something over her face and this model has the same thing. (edit: the Veiled Virgin by Giovanni Strazza)

She has parts of the model going in all different directions.

I'm really glad to have the elves done. I was saving this one for last because she made me so nervous with how hard she'd be to paint.

Next up is an elf that I'm using for Pathfinder and a knight in a bucket helm.

The elf is an Oathmark elf my dad gave me and let me build by myself. I used one of the shields from the GW elves.

The knight is a Bones model but the other one is really cool. My dad got a lot of Oathmark models and I really like elves.

This is a Bones bandit or rogue. he's out in the snow, so I put snow on the base and on his hood/cloak thingy.

I was surprised that we had snow cover but Dad found an old package of GW snow that I was able to use for this model.

This next one is a metal miniature. She's going to take me on the library cart from the first room to the Sci-Fi section.

Dad didn't know he gave me this one. (Editors note: I did not, in fact, give him this one, wretched child. She is a great model though so I understand why he grabbed her).

 

We think this one is a rogue from the Rangers of Shadow Deep line. She's really cool. 

Next up is more Bones. These are all female models that dad gave me. They are also in the snow/winter.

I was all over the place this week. I also have some more role playing models.

The Tortle and viking go with the rogue. Dad printed these for me.

The last entry is some Star Wars Legion models. This is two commanders, a crashed X-Wing pilot and some droids. Dad made me go back and add more paint to the commanders.

5 x 32mm x 7 pts = 35 pts

Great job Rhys, and a lovely collection of models once again. I think the extra time put on the commanders was well worth the effort, though would also remind you to paint the base rims a similar color to bring harmony in the army. It adds extra Universal Force to your gaming, something very helpful in Star Wars gaming I hear. 

Some great bits here to pick out though. Especially the elves' veil work. Not an easy thing to do, but great effort here. Can see what you were trying to achieve which is all that matters!

And the snow effect on Bones. Great use of the GW snow flock. Could suggest to help push it more, is to add a bit of light grey or light blue paint to the areas that you will add the flock. It will emphasis the snow effect, and give it some extra depth. 

Smashing through the models (legally acquired or not) and the sections as well. Great job.
