DougM - Last Minute Terra, Altair IV & Lune (177 points)

Final effort - it's been fun and I have made my points target.. My final planetfalls will be Terra, Altair with old robots, and a quick Zoom back to Lune.

Old Robots..  well folk will be quick to point out that these aren't actually robots..   demented pepperpots only... And printed and painted as the classic movie Daleks from 1966 and the Dalek invasion of Earth (Terra)

But these are definitely robots, and the wreck on the left s very much the ancient version... more 3d prints, of Bender, for a bit of fun.

Then the final troops for my Sepoy forces...  and changing tides was very much the experience of John Company in India in 1856, these are 3rd Bengal Cavalry, among the earliest of the mutineers at Meerut, qualifying these guys for Lune.

Unfortunately, I have run out of bases for these, so can't claim the full 10 points each, 8 perhaps?

So that's me done..  for points

7 x 28mm Daleks = 35 (and  Squirrel Point!) even I'm not cheeky enough to claim these as 28mm vehicles for 20 points each...
2 x 28mm Benders = 10
9 x 28mm Cavalry @ 8? = 72
3 planet bonus = 60

A total of 177 for the last submission..

Final squirrel points = 14
1/200 WW2 Japanese Aircraft
1/200 WW2 US Aircraft
1/200 WW2 British Aircraft
1/200 WW2 German Aircraft
1/144 WW1 British Aircraft
1/144 WW1 German Aircraft
28mm German Armour
28mm Japanese Armour
28mm 12th SS Panzer infantry
28mm Indian Mutiny Sepoys
28mm Dr Who
28mm Daleks
28mm Austrian Napoleonic
28mm (and larger!) Fantasy

phewwww....it's been a blast.

From DougM - Lightning Elephants- Corsucant (sic) - (76 Points)

Not exactly a points bomb, and I am sure no surprise after my 1/200 Japanese WW2 aircraft...  this very versatile hex mat is no longer Kent, it is in fact, paddy fields on Asian islands.

So first some Army Lightnings. The hard part was finding ways to make a very dull colour scheme a little bit interesting.

And the Navy is here... F4F Wildcats. As usual, I didn't make them for a particular squadron, but kept them generic.

Finally, you know when you think an 'army' is finished, and you spot something? Well, it doesn't come much more 'Imperial' conflict than the Indian Mutiny, and who could resist a splendid (and very well priced) AW Miniatures Elephant drawn limber? I think this will be my Deployment Point for Sharp Practice.

That's my 'Imperial' for Coruscant planet bonus, making a total of:

12 x 10mm 'vehicles' @3 each = 36
1 x 28mm 'vehicle' @20 = 20
Planet Bonus = 20 for a total of 76 points.

Hopefully more to come this week...

And Squirrels..  now up to 10 I think.

  • 1/200 WW2 Japanese Aircraft
  • 1/200 WW2 US Aircraft
  • 1/200 WW2 British Aircraft
  • 1/200 WW2 German Aircraft
  • 1/144 WW1 British Aircraft (not quite enough for WW1 German Aircraft (doh!))
  • 28mm German Armour
  • 28mm 12th SS Panzer infantry
  • 28mm Indian Mutiny Sepoys
  • 28mm Dr Who
  • 28mm Austrian Napoleonics
I was curious about the content of this post based on the title.  I was kind of expecting Incendiary Pigs or some other Anti-elephant ploy that used to exist on the WRG army lists.  However I am well satisfied with what you've presented Doug.  Love the aircraft and that Elephant is just the bees' knees.  Really good work on the saddle blanket and mahout.

From DougM: Arrakis - a Dry and Dusty place, enlivened by restless Natives (415 points)

I have had my Arrakis submission ready for a week or so, I was just hoping my 'Arid' mat would arrive from Tiny Wargames in time to provide the groundwork...  but sadly, not yet, so here they are. I am also waiting for a flag to arrive... so a bare staff in the meantime I'm afraid.

A contingent of mutinous Sepoys, Badmashes and Wallahs, all based (in my usual style) for Sharp Practice 2 on one penny coins, magnets and Warbases MDF sabots.

The figures themselves are from AW Miniatures, who just before Christmas were running a very generous 30% off sale, and so I picked myself up this lot. Arguably they are not as finely detailed as some other manufacturers, but when you are painting en masse, they have a ton of character. And this is my first experiment with Contrast Paints, and I have to say this have worked really well.

I actually said to myself that this was the force finished...  ha!  Then of course realised I fancied adding some Bengal Light Cavalry and an Elephant to tow the artillery...  so hopefully I get them finished before the Challenge ends.

I'm claiming Arrakis as this basing says dry and dusty to me.. !  Next cab off the rank, their British opponents. Now, who makes a good Flashman figure?

Points =

77 x 28mm figures @ 5 = 385

1 x 28mm Artillery @10 = 10

Planet Bonus = 20

Total = 415...  and definitely another Squirrel...

From DaveD

AAAh a Friday kaboom - very nice . Finished ... finished .. oh yeah ... lets see those Nellies... cracking work Doug love em . You can find "Flash" Harry in the Giants in Miniature range

From BruceR Chamber of Challenge, 3 25mm 15pts + Adventurers Landing 20pts = 35 pts

Moving from the Shrine the party enters the Adventurers Landing.  Here the party returns to the FIW with Rangers Hal and Will moving through still water looking for the supply island.  As they approach what they think is the correct spot they see movement and Hal drops his paddle and sights his musket in case the Huron or some Frenchie has stumbled upon their supplies.   The figures and canoe are AW and will work great as a Sharp Practice 2 moveable deployment point.  I used a 60mm base and painted it green.  Next I used Vallejo Still Water, a product I had, yet never used.  After pouring over the painted surface I dropped a couple of tufts in the goop.

The two are painted as British Rangers in FWI.  One has his ranger frock still on, the other working hard has packed his coat.  The canoe has seats, a bag, paddle and a couple of additional muskets.  Hoping approaching the landing with the canoe is acceptable for the chamber.
5 pts for the 28mm figures = 10 pts
Canoe I took 5 points as well, adjust if too much = 5 pts
Adventurers Landing Challenge = 20 pts
Total 35 pts

Stay safe and sane.  Tomorrow the weatherman says
it will break above zero.

From MartinC - The Might and Glory of Port Vale - O'Grady's Gulch

As I sit here and type my entry for Challenge Island I am listening to Manchester City vs Port Vale in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. For those of you not familiar with football (FOOTBALL not bloody soccer cos you play it with your feet) such as Americans, Canadians, Scots, the FA cup is the oldest domestic cup competition (first played for in 1871) and pits amateur teams against the professional giants such as Liverpool, Manchester City etc, with over 700 teams entering to play against the elite. It is famous for passion and upsets. Port Vale, the mighty Port Vale are the 78th best team in England, Manchester City are 3rd. Anything better than a 6-0 defeat will be a moral victory
When I started editing the photos the match started, I am now a few sentences in and we are losing 1-0.
On to the painting. I've had a productive day.

1st up some early WW2 French transport for my 28mm Bolt Action French army, they will fight their 1st battle in 2 weeks.

This is a Laffy S20 transport and can hold a section. It is a cross between a truck and a prime mover. Nice model from Warlord

Next up is this cute little artillery tractor is a chenilette and is armoured but carries no weapons, there is a rifle inthe stowage but don't think that counts

The trailer is unattached so i can swap it round.

Still 1-0, but not sure how

Next up back to my Japanese project.

This palanquin is from AW minis and was an easy built. It decked out the bearers and palanquin in matching livery. This will be used to bring in nobles and tax collectors to the village.

STOP THE PRESS. WE'VE BLOODY SCORED 1-1

meanwhile back at the palanquin

The village is a thriving hub and can employ more than 1 musician. This is Hayate (which means "sudden, sound of wind". Could well be the Japanese for fart.

AW Mini

Then it's the last of the villagers, not sure who made these

All good oriental scenarios have warrior monks, so mine does as well.

I have a similar number painted up differently and maybe there is opportunity for rivalry

2-1 - the joy of supporting Port Vale is short lived

Couple of bandit types

Finally my submission for O'Grady's Gulch. DaveD of this parish gave me a bag of colonial British troops that he didn't want, they were mainly Foundry and would work nicely for Zulu war or similar. In them was a vignette of a wounded soldier being helped by a comrade. It was a nice sculpt but looked wrong. A bit of research and it is a Foundry Indian Mutiny figure. So I decided to give it him back as it will work for his Sudan collection, especially if I paint it up in Khaki.

Think it's come out really well

He'd better like it or no more bonus points on Thursdays for him

Scores on the doors

15.5 x 28mm infantry = 77.5
1 palanquin - about same size as a gun  = 10
2 French vehicles = 40
Island Location Bonus = 30

Total = 157.5

We made it to half time 2-1 down but we have scored. It's all gravy now

MilesR: A world spanning entry.  My head is spinning a bit with the variety and quality of your painting.  Your point-o-logical divinations seem correct to me - I think this post may put you into the lead - for now.  :)

From MartinC - Landfall (and drumroll) at Sanders Sand Dunes (55 Points)

Thanks to my excellent crew (Captain Pugwash, Master Bates, Seaman Staines and Roger the Cabin Boy - fake names from the eponymous TV series of my youth) , you don't think I could do all this painting on my own do you, we have made landfall at Sanders Sandbanks before Christmas. We unloaded the Taiko Drum and Hibeki announced our arrival.

I have a 3ft by 4ft space in my painting room that I am setting up a 16th Century Japanese village so that i can play skirmishes when ever the mood takes me. This will the village drummer and alarm system. The drum is from AW Miniatures, a new range to me and it's a very nice set. The platform I've had for ages and it used to be brown but that doesn't go with the village so I painted it grey.

The text on the drum says "DRUM" and Hibeki means sound, let's not over complicate things and maybe even learn some Japanese words.

Right, so this is an island entry with a single 28mm figure with a massive drum and a platform that is 60mm by 80mm by 20mm (ish). So that is, well actually I've no clue how many points that is.

If Curt gets time to post this before Christmas then I hope you and yours have a fantastic time. If it's post Christmas then I hope you and yours had a fantastic time.

Haha! This is fabulous, Martin, I love it. That stone platform looks like it was made with the drum in mind. Will you be treating us with more entries for this Japanese project? I hope so. If you're still casting about for a set of good rules I can heartily recommend 'Daisho' from the Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare.

We'll treat the drum and platform as a 28mm vehicle, so that puts us at 55 points, including the bonus for Sander's Sand Dunes. Great work Martin and welcome to Challenge Island!

From JohnM: FIW Canoes (30 Points)

Two submissions, 2 weeks in a row! I have gone into 8 Kickstarters in the last 3 years and these figures are the latest acquisitions. I would not usually paint pieces that are not going to used in games, but I think some of the FIW rules we use do allow for canoes, so I said why not.

These are from AW Miniatures, and they delivered right as promised. I put in a pledge for set of European Missionaries that I thought would be useful. As part of the pledge I also received both a Ranger and Indian canoe set, as well as a British cannon and crew and some Grenadiers.

The figures are quite big and a side by side with my other FIW figures from Conquest Miniatures makes the Grenadiers and Cannon Crew unusable for me, but for these canoe teams it does not really matter. Oddly the Missionaries that I made the pledge for are compatible with the Conquest Miniatures. I am not sure why you would sell two quite incompatible 28 mm ranges from the same catalogue.

I do note that Warlord Games, who sell the Conquest Miniature line, have canoeists in their catalogue but I do not see them on the Conquest Miniatures site so I am not sure if they are by the same sculptor. A lot of 28mm figures have seen my painting desk and I can easily say the Conquest Miniatures line are the best I have seen in this scale for all the eras I have painted.

The figures themselves are nice, some what "Eliteish" in posture; with them looking up to the right with their sharp chiseled faces. There is some flash, they came with a lot of extra bits but I could not fit it all in the canoes. All in all though they are OK.

Well that is it for this week, I will have a solo submission for next week as I am starting work on a project which is charting completely new territory for me. I will leave the point scoring to Byron as I am unsure if canoes are regarded as vehicles or not.

ByronM: Another very sharp looking entry John.  I like these as they are not something you see all the time, in fact I don't believe I have ever seen a miniature canoe!  Being Canadian I know we have a lot of history that could be played out in miniature, but never really looked into doing so before.  This is a very cool idea though, you could use them for any number of small skirmish games based around either exploration (change the Congo rules to be based on the Voyagers instead of English explorers and move it to North America, or use Saga or Sharp Practice for some European vs Native battles).  By your saying you already do FIW though, I assume you have a rule system you use, which is it? It would be interesting to check out.

I had to do some checking with the commander in chief on points, in the end they are going to be viewed  as a bike or horse with two riders, so 15 points per model for a total of 30 points.  Which seems rather fitting as that is kind of how they were used, as the cavalry of the river ways. Regardless of points, thanks for showcasing something very cool and different than the norm!
