From BenitoV: Uruk Hai leader, Rulers and Tokens for Midgard (15 points+?)

This is my initial post for this year's Challenge, presenting an Uruk Hai leader and some tokens and rulers to use with Midgard, the recently published system to play battles in the Heroic Age by the Reisswitz Press/Too Fat Lardies stable. 

For those in the unknown, Midgard covers both historical and fantasy-based medium sized battles (between 60 and 100 minis) focused on the action of heroic leaders. Having stopped playing fantasy battles for almost 2 decades, this was an excellent opportunity to undust my old GW LOTR  minis and add some reinforcements.

My first project is an Uruk Hai army. I already owned enough models to create a 200 points army, short of the 300-350 minimum needed to play a battle. For this reason, I'm looking now for reinforcements, and the first step is this mounted leader (or "hero" in the Midgard parlance), to be followed by a couple of warg-riding units.

The models presented today are 3D printed minis in 28mm from the Medbury's orcs range.   

Additionally I have printed and painted the rulers and tokens needed to play with these rules. The rulers are used to move units and to measure distances to charge or shot missiles. The tokens represent units with close combat advantage (red arrows with swords) and units that have already shot in the turn (green ovals with the quiver and arows).

In terms of points the post is worth 15 points for sure (10 points for the mounted model and 5 points for the model on foot) and I will leave to the discretion of the minion-on-duty to account some additional points for the rulers and markers

From AdamC: Egyptian Spearmen and Beornings Fantasy (170 points)

 

I neglected to include the map last time. Here shows my visit to the nature stacks and now I am backtracking to Fantasy.  First up some additional Egyptians.

We have a few additional archers who where hiding on desk.

They have one leader with a bronze sword. For the period we are doing it should probably be iron or steal but I want to have them able to portray earlier Egyptians.

Here we have the backbone of any ancient army soldiers armed with shields and spears. The shields seems to have been oxide which makes sense as wood is a fairly limited resource in Egypt.

The shields had me puzzled as they did seem to make sense until I saw a historic example

As you can see in this example (ancient toy soldiers) the grip is at the narrow point.  I'm assuming position these men are holding these shields in something like "present arms" not a marching position.

There are 18 Egyptians of all types.

Next we have a little fun project a few years ago I got War Games Atlantic's Plastic Irish for slingers... I didn't get as many as I wanted and need to come up with a project. So I present the Beornings.

The Beornings are blink and you miss them culture from the Lord of the Rings. Beorn has a big roll to play in the Hobbit and after the battle of the Five Armies he organized a group of people called the woodmen into a nation that took his name.

Who these people were is an open question but I imagine they are something of a conglomeration of peoples. Refugees from Dale, the ancient people's of the period Dunlendings who left home maybe even cousins of the people of Rohan. So I mixed and matched gear from my bits box and let my imagination run a little wild (Tolkien if this isn't what you had in mind I can only say I did this with love in my heart) here are some close ups.

I decided to do some tree themed shields because it seemed appropriate.

A cloaked hero these cloaks are a great feature of this set.

Another leader with a horn to call men to his aide.

Another leader with a prestige tunic of blue.  I'll probably play these guys as lords of the wild in Saga I need some bowmen to support them and some bears or werebears. 

Points all figures are 25/28 mm

Possibly 20 points for fantasy (I think I can double back but I could be wrong)

For a total of 170 or 190 points 

Sylvain: Your Egyptians are great, as usual, and your "Beornings" show lots of creativity on your part. I'm sure Tolkien would have approved :-). As for claiming points, I'm afraid you would have to change location by using Sarah's cart (simply done by painting a female figure, a modest price to pay). A very decent points harvest!

From Barks: Zombies & Galadriel & new Challenger (Science Fiction, Library Cart) (197 points)

I'm finishing off my whirlwind library trip.

Firstly, thirty Poxwalkers. These are GW's science fiction zombies, and as such are overly detailed. They have these quite nice grins, and are erupting with tentacles and horns. One is turning into a fly. There are maggots crawling in and on the figures. My main complaint with the miniatures is that there is no simple route for customisation. I'd prefer to be able to adjust the angles of the arms, try out different heads etc, but I'm stuck with repeats of the same ten distinct monopose figures. Sure, I could convert them, but it's a bit too much work for fodder. I stuck to a limited palette with yellow accents.

Thirty poxwalkers

That finishes off my library tasks- so I summon Lady Sarah's Library Cart to take me to the Snowlord's shelves. This is a 3D print of the lady Galadriel and her mirror (Printing Goes Ever On). I threw in a quick eye of Sauron, which stands out much more than I had anticipated! I wonder if I should make the edges darker. Should I give it a coat of gloss?

From Millsy: Firstly, congrats to the both of you on the new arrival mate! So good to see your latest creation healthy and happy with her Dad. Remember its never too soon to start them on the brushes. Might I suggest Skullzette for a name? It has a lovely feminine tone and just rolls off the tongue.

On to more important matters and you've got another great entry here. I second your thoughts on the customisation options (or lack thereof) for the poxwalkers but as you say they're just chaff.

Galadriel is wonderful The Eye of Sauron is just brilliant. My first thought is she's thinking "Bugger. I knew washing the palantir in this thing was a bad idea!" 

From AdamC Hurin Book and Dark Age Irish 110 points (1 Squirre)

 So this is very one is very much an interpretation on my part.  I for my book entry I am using the Simarilion and Children of Hurin because I am that sort of Nerd.   

Hurin Thalion (the steadfast or strong) possibly the greatest and most tragic of Tolkien's legendarium.   I used a Wargame's Atlantic Irish figure here.  He has the high crowed helm Tolkien seems to like.  the figue has no armor but we can imagin that tunic is actually a sure coat hiding mail. 

He wields an axe because that is the weapon he used at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, the battle of unnumbered tears.  Hurin and his bother Huor an the men of Dor-Lomin formed a rear guard in the Fen of Serech where as the last man alive he discarded his shield and cried: Aurë entuluva! (Day will come agai) as he slew until draged down by overwhelming numbers (after killing at least 70 foes). Things when rapidly down hill from there for our hero as he watched Morgoth play merry hell with his children and allies.

I decided to do the cloak in dark green but the tunic in a yellow. Most depictions of Hurin seem to favor dark colors (black) but I liked the idea of him in bright colors (a light in darkness as it were) and I couldn't find anything to contradict this idea (someone will now do so I have no doubt 😂)

Next up five Irish warriors from the same set.  4 of them represent up class warriors though perhaps not the top echelon.

The fellow in the center is clearly of a lower order with his small shield and dagger back up weapon.

I'm pleased with the skin tones I got here. Presumably these fellows are going without shirts (or armor) to show off they're fine additions to my dark age Irish warband.

In Saga Wolfhounds are the icon unit for Irish warbands. I have some already but it's nice to add some more since they came in the box.

There are ten dogs in all plus the handler. With a javelin. 

The dogs fur and the handler's skin came out well a point of improvement in my painting (if I may say so)

Points Hurin is a 25 mm figure so 5 points plus another 20 as my book entry.

The Irish are all 25mm figures 10 dogs and 6 men for 80 points assuming the dogs get full points. The Irish should also net me another Squirrel point 

So another 105 points in total. Hopefully I will have an age of sail entry for next week. 

A fine collection of warriors of myth and history Adam.  I recognize those GB Irish warriors as I have a few in my army, although I've yet to paint any hounds.  Nice work on shields and yes the time taken painting these shows.   I am bumping your score up by a few points in recognition.

From Barks: The time of the orc has come (255 points)

I had some mandatory time off work due to COVID, so finished off another 48 orcs to accompany my earlier dozen. I got to join some of the AHPC Zoom chats as well.

I also did their leader, Gothmog, in foot and mounted poses. In the novel, he's not described in any detail as either orc, man or wraith. Peter Jackson made him a memorable and charismatic orc. There's an engaging rumour the prosthetics were based on Harvey Weinstein.

That last picture is truly horrifying, you should have a warning on that. These orcs look great, Barks. Very grim and gritty, following the 'realistic' look of the movies over the more fantastical styles of other fantasy settings. Your Gothmog figure is really well done and quite a bit more handsome than his real world inspiration.
