Welcome to the Painting Challenge. Here you will find the fabulous, fevered work of miniature painters from around the world. While participants come from every ethnicity, gender, age and nationality, they have three things in common: they love miniatures, they enjoy a supportive community, and they want to set themselves against the Challenge.
This site features the current year's event along with the archives of past Painting Challenges.
Enjoy your visit and remember to come back soon.
It's St Patrick's Day, I have an Irish wife and I'm woking on a project based in Ireland.
This is the Earl of Antrim's Regiment in 10mm for the William War in Ireland 1688-91. Figures are by Pendraken. Antrim formed the unit in Ulster for King James' Army largely from Catholics. However, there were supposedly a lot of Scots in the mix and the Williamites referred to it a Redshanks in reference to kilts. Later in the war Antrim's got kitted out with French equipments and that's how I've represented them here. At some point maybe I'll get an earlier version done with some highland dress added in,
This regiment has a unique place in Ulster's history, basically triggering the whole war! In December 1688 James' lieutenant in Ireland order them to take over garrison duty in Derry to replace a regiment that was possibly disloyal. A group of Apprentice Boys locked the gates in their face setting up the Siege of Derry. You google to go down your own rabbit hole on that one, but I can certainly remember the Aprrentice Boys taking part in Orange Order marches during the troubles.
I've based the unit for BLB, in three stands including a pike continent in the centre stand. The late 17th century was a period of transition and under BLB units can range from All Pike to All Musket, with most having a mix. I've interned tis regiment to count as "Regulation" meaning that with mostly matchlock muskets and a small pike company to fend off cavalry.
Flags were home prints. The Colonel's Colour (white with the cross of St George) came from Warflag. The King's colour I cut and pasted together using partial images in League of Augsburg Guides to the War. In 10mm you can get away with a fair bit.
I've gone with my colour coded unit tables, Jacobite Green in this case.
To get the Orange side of things on the score sheet I also have a Dutch light artillery piece.
Points wise there are 33 men in Antrim's Regiment and 3 gunners at 1 point a piece plus 2 points for the gun making 35 points total.
I couldn't pass up the opportunity to play some Derry music. The Undertones were a bunch of Catholic lads from Bogside in Ulster in the 1970s. With future prospects being limited to joining the IRA or emigrating they did the natural teenage thing and formed a rock and roll band. They cut a demo and mailed it to the legendary DJ John Peel in London, who called it the best thing he'd ever heard and away they went...
I do love a themed submission, and dropping an Irish Williamite War Regiment of St Pat's day is a real treat Peter! Take a few bonus points to celebrate :-)
The second post from me today and another unit from the Campaign in Ireland 1688-1691. This is Sutherland's Regiment of Horse from the Jacobite side. Jacobite Horse were aggressively handled and gave good account of themselves during this war.
These are Pendraken figures is 10mm and they are very nice indeed. I love the movement in the poses, which are the sculpts as used in the Warfare 28mm range just downsized. I'm planning on using Beneath the Lily Banners from the League of Augsburg with these two bases representing a squadron sized unit. In BLB it would be 2-3 28mm figures per base and I've gone with 5 10mm figures using the same bases.
Uniforms were less regimented in this early ear so both sides fielded foot and horse in both red and grey coats. I've done the unit tables in a pale green for the Jacobite side which looks yellow in my light box. There was to be flag on the pole in the back rank, but that's lost in the pile of my basement carpet so a replacement will be added later.
I need to go over the officer's face with a drybrush as the wash took too heavily and he looks like a Nazgul!
I also need to work on my basing at this smaller scale but overall I'm pleased with the results.
That's 20 cavalry in 10mm @ 2 points = 20 points for the unit.
New year, new project, new scale (mostly), new era (mostly). If the title has left you at se at bit, it's a reference to one of the early challenges. So far back in the primordial mists of time that it was before I worked out that I lived only 1km away from the Snowlord! On that particular challenge Ray had a tremendous come from behind victory largely on the strength of pulling a never ending stream of Fresh cavalry regiments from the Nine Years' War out of his backside in the final week. Fear not perky if un-balanced Stewardess I'm not planning anything like that.
Leveson's Dragoons Dismounted
This is the first regiment from a new project on the Williamite War in Ireland, aka the Nine Year's War, aka the War of the League of Augsburg, aka the War of British Succession, aka the events that caused all of those divisive Orange Order marches during the Troubles. I am planning to use the League of Augsburg Beneath the Lily Banners/War of Three Kings Rules using Pendraken's excellent 10mm range.
This was my not first time painting 10mm, but it's been over 20 years and there's a big difference between lace wars and desert rats in this scale! These are 16 dismounted dragons representing Leveson's Regiment from the the English army (later these became the 3rd Kings Hussars). In BLB these fight as loss order troops dismounted or as second rate cavalry mounted, and look to be very useful on table top. I've used a flintlock firing line pack plus a drummer and an officer cribbed from a pikeman figure.
I was very impressed with the Quality of the Pendraken figures. Barry Hilton tells me that there are the same sculpts as the 28mm ones he sells as Warfare Miniatures just shrunk. Working in a different scale is always a learning experience, but that's what life should be. It was mostly a matter of working out what worked, what doesn't and what you can cheat on (which in 10mm is a lot). Overall I'm right chuffed about the results, but I've left myself room for improvement. I also need to work a bit on basing. The unit late is colour coded Orange for the Williamite side, but the photo makes it look too yellow so I'll darken the next set up a bit.
Points wise I am continuing to erode away at my target at a snail's pace. This week's death by paper cut damage is 16 figures @1 point a pop for 10mm = 16 points. Heck that's the same value as 8 1/2400 battleships!
Not another person infected by Ray...at this rate everyone will be going Donkeybrook! Very nice work on these little chaps.
Back down to 15mm for my next Painting Challenge entry. I've been promising myself that I'd paint a Spanish brigade for my Beneath the Lily Banners rules for a few years now. well 5 years to be exact, where'd that time go?? I bought a copy of The Spanish Armies of the League of Augsberg, here, after winning a competition which got the juices flowing.....
So here we are!
There are 4 units of infantry, 4 artillery pieces, a stand of Grenadiers and 3 commanders. All the figures are from Donnington, which are not my usual goto company for my NYW figures. I bought 98% of this on ebay for a bargain price. Then had to top up a few bits and bobs. They are a little larger than Essex
A pic from the back

Spanish flags are a right pain, there were a quite a number captured at various battles but we don't know which flag belongs to which regiment, with the exception of Tercio Aragon on the left. So I picked the ones I liked and added them to the regts. All flags are taken from the book previously mentioned, The Spanish Armies in the War of the League of Augsberg 1688-97 by Giancarlo Boeri, Josè Luis Mirecki and Josè Palau with Artwork by Robert Hall available from The Pike & Shot Society
So by my calculations, we have
4 x 21 figure units = 168
6 x Grenadiers = 12
12 x Artillerymen = 24
4 x Artillery pieces = 16
6 x Commanders = 24
For a total of 244 points!!
You have been a busy boy Ray. I don't know how you find the time?! It sounds like an interesting period, the big question is, when are the Rejects going to see this lot on the table in the shed-o-war?
You're spot on with the points but there are also 4 flags which will get you some more points. And I'm throwing in a few more for impressing me with your output...I don't happen often folks, but now and again I am impressed!
Once again these will be used for my Donnybrook games......yeah I now?
Not too sure how Mr Campbell will score these as there's an extra lass on one of the horse's, but I guess you already noticed that!
Now I gotta take the kids swimming for 2 1/2 hours. Wonder if I'll get time to finish my
BFG Bonus round figures!!
Fingles crossed!

It's great to see that you've come out of your sick bed, Ray, brush in hand and purpose in your heart! :)
Personally I'm not a big fan of Warfare Miniatures' castings, but you've done them great service here. Besides, who can go wrong with a bunch of red-coated donkey-wollopers, wearing floppy hats, festooned with pistols and swords? I like those mounted civilian models as well, especially that one of the young girl riding side-saddle behind her father. An excellent series of poses and quite useful for the tabletop, I'd expect.
These nine equestrians, plus passenger will give you 95 points for your tally, Mr. Rousell. Well done sir!
Not sure why I painted these up.........?? I was supposed to be painting Moors for Tangiers, but you know what its like, that little voice in the back of your head!!
These are 10 Reiver Castings figures, pack Mon 4 from their very large range of late 17th Century Wars. The plan was after I've painted up all I need for Tangiers to spread and paint a small Monmouth Rebel army.
Well here's the start just a little early, my 6th entry into the Challenge should earn me 50 points!
Ray, buddy, when you hear that little voice in the back of your head it usually means you have to go to the washroom. That's probably why your family is wondering around the house wearing hazmat suits... ;)
Seriously, great work on these rebels (and not a blaster or Wookie in sight). I like that they are all armed with assorted farm implements and are wearing a variety of civilian attire. A wonderful addition to your Donnybrook force. Well done Mr. R. Now, take a break from the paint-desk and attend to those 'personal matters'. ;)
My 5th entry proper into this years Challenge, yet more Donnybrook figures!!!
This is the Dixon artillery set, from their Grand Alliance range which can be purchased here, for the measly sum of £6.95. Which for 3 figures and an artillery piece is a bargain!
Although I've written this is an English piece, it can be used for the French as well
as they both wore the same uniform. These should add 25 points to my total?
Great work Ray! Good to see Dixon getting some press here (a wonderful set of figures they are too). Love the vibrant colours, though how does that fellow keep his sponger so white? He could market his secret to the laundry trade and make millions. ;)
Can't believe this is only my 3rd entry into the Challenge proper??
And NO, they're not the same figures I entered into the last bonus round!
They're all Foundry figures, infact they were painted the same time as the chaps
from HMS Badger Dragon and are the other half of the Foundry packs.
I did wonder why one of the packs I bought from ebay had what looked like tight curly hair??
Now I know why...Doh!
And there was me, as I was painting the buggers up, thinking, perhaps
I should paint one of these as a coloured chap??
These rouges should earn me 45 points!
I'm currently in 49th place, thanks to the last bonus round.
And have a few things up my sleeve to hopefully get me up to my 500 point mark.....fingers crossed!
Clint! What have you started? Now Ray is trying his hand at poetry! Stop. Please. Stop. This bunch of nautical reprobates will indeed earn you 45 points. Very nice painting Ray!
Making his debut in the main part of the challenge, we have that smuggler of budgies, Mr Ray Roussel!
Blimey??? Can't believe its February and I'm only just posting my first entry proper into the Challenge!!! Bad me!
And although there's 12, 25mm figures sitting looking pretty, I'm afraid only 6 can count as the other 6 were started back in September.
Now I'm trying to be a little clever here as these 12 Foundry figures which I picked up on Ebay for a song, are painted up to represent both a French and Jacobite Irish regt for my Donnybrook excursions. So I can play games in both Ireland and Flanders, as well as my main theatre in Tangiers.
So I make that a sad total of 35 points! But I'm just glad I'm up on the board at last!
Are you sure he's a badger, not a skunk? Something a bit whiffy here. Hmmm, I've worked out what it was - he was hoping I wouldn't spot that 6 x 25mm foot figures @ 5 points each is a total of 30 points, not the 35 he's trying to blag! I should screenshot that just in case he tries to weasel out of it by editing the post after I've adjudicated *grin* Nice work on these Ray and it's good that they can do double-duty.
Nah not really!!!!! I just added on a few zero's for fun, but I had you going.............. So its only a mere 24 points for my last entry into this years Challenge.
Well done to Curt, don't know how you manage to do all this and find time to paint as well as eat? And a big fat well done to all my fellow contestants! Its been a blast!
So for my last entry, may I present 6 French Brigade leaders for my NYW French army. Three are Essex Miniatures and three are Donnington riders on Essex horses. They are based on for Beneath the Lily Banners rules.
Francois Louis, Prince of Conti
Louis-Charles d'Hautefort
duc de Roqualaure
Mareschal de Camp Montmorancy
Jean-Armand de Joyeuse, Marquis of Grondpre
Lt-Gen Feuquires
From Curt: Haha! That was awesome Ray! You certainly had a few of us going, make no mistake - cheeky bugger. These floppy-hatted fellows are lovely Ray. I particularly like the last fellow pointing to the distance - he looks like he should be in a painting by Diego Velazquez. It's been great to have you with us again Mr. Rousell. I know your work situation does not allow you to be the Points Titan that you were a few years ago, but even with your more modest volume you still provide wonderful inspiration to us all (and a lot of laughs).
