From KentG: 28mm Carthaginians (45pts)

Another week has passed, this past week has been incredibly busy
one in which I didn't manage to do a lot of painting
The figures below are for a commission.
I was unable to find the manufacture, the customer said they were to be
painted as Carthaginian light infantry.

I had a box arrive this week and when i opened it was pleasantly surprised
everything from 40mm Napoleonic's to 28mm Samurai. hoping undercoat
some of these tonight to start painting

I decided after seeing some amazing hand painted shields
that I should do a few shields myself.
I find painting shields really enjoyable, but you can spend a lot of time
on something so small.

Kind of wish these figures belonged to me as I really like the
finish on them.

Other than Napoleonic's, Carthaginian armies are one of my
favorite armies to paint, With all the elephants and different nations you can add in

            Points

Points are super easy on these chaps 8 x 28mm foot = 40pts

From Millsy: I know a lot of people think Romans are cool but that's only because they don't know enough about Carthage and her loyal servants. Your reds are absolutely lovely Kent and work so well with the cream, white and black that sit alongside them. The fine detail you've managed to squeeze into the shields is remarkable and worth a few extra tetradrachm! Cracking work mate.

From KerryT - Painting back to front (285 points)

Morning, afternoon and evening all

I've had fun this week as I've had a few days off but as usual overextended myself by trying to accomplish too much again. So tonight, rather than packing my things on the eve of a short holiday, I find myself frantically trying to finish basing in order to take photographs and complete this entry. Napoleon I'm afraid didn't quite make it to the snapshot phase.

Normally when you paint an army, I think most of us start with common units and end up leaving command figures till last. For the first time ever I've done it the other way around.

It all started when my "oh look shiny" tendency  got drawn by the War of the Roses, largely I suspect because of the recent popularity of the Never Mind the Billhooks rule set. That in combination with a friend selling off a large quantity of Perry Miniatures plastic figures cheaply got me hooked. Having bought at least a dozen boxes I found myself side tracked yet again. I listen to audiobooks while I paint and after listening to a series on the Hundred Years War by Griff Hosker I have deviated off course again,  That coupled with the "oh look shiny" effect of both Antediluvian Miniatures and Claymore casting I now find myself in the 100YW rather than WOTR

So my first foray into the 100YW starts with Joan of Arc

I had originally planned to paint her up as my Famous Person entry though thought on re-reading the criteria thought that meant the miniature would have to be a statue. So Joan will have to do for my Lady Sarah entry instead.

Louis Comte de Vendome's banner is in the foreground

She's accompanied by a few metal men at arms, and some plastic pavisiers

Joan's personal white banner came in the Perry plastic box - a bit big for a foot figure to carry I think

Needing another famous person led to a quick rummage around and yielded a spare William Marshall  sculpt ( I thought I had lost the original rider so as is usual bought another and immediately found the original!)

I couldn't find the traffic cone I made last year to put on his head

Next along are some Footsore Welsh Medieval figures - this time all spearmen, a mixture of armoured and un-armoured. A simpler painting scheme this time to denote their lesser status compared to the nobility, so no plaid this time.

There's a lone musician in there somewhere

Had a go at some hand painted shields - the dragon that ended up looking like a dog is hidden at the back

The only drawback with these figures are the bendy spears

Did I mention plaid? This is what largely delayed me this week, trying to add these 4 Footsore Mounted Welsh cavalry

Shield transfer alert

I bought these 4 to increase the unit size of some painted a few months back

Flag by Flags of War

And finally with yesterday being Valentine's day there has to be a bit of Romance - I presented it to my wife

A wabbit fwom the Buwwows and Bwadgews wange

Lovely figures these, I bought some to paint up as female figures

Thank you

In Summary then

25 Footsore Welsh foot @ 5 points =  125

4 Footsore mounted Welsh at 10 points = 80 [Millsy - correction 40 points]

Joan of Arc Command stand 3 mounted and 4 foot = 80 [Millsy - correction 50 points]

Badgers & Burrows miniature at 5 points

Famous Person Bonus = 20 points

Romance Bonus 20 points

Lady Sarah's Library cart bonus at 20 points

Total 350 points  [Millsy - correction 280 points]

My library browsing to date

From Millsy: From time to time I see something that makes me feel the pull of a potential new project. This time Kerry the pull is like a black hole mate, with such gorgeous eye candy to tempt me. Your colour choices are absolutely wonderful, with the grey horse / red furniture combo and the saturated blues a standout, all finished off with some smashing banners. You math was off on a couple of items so I've corrected those plus thrown in a few bonus points for the lovely hand painted plaid. Can't wait to see more 100YW stuff from you!

From PaulOG: Allied Gallic Cavalry (132 points)

These two units are Crossing the Rubicon for me - I just don't do units of cavalry for any period, so these took some working up to. But at last, here are my Allied (Mercenary) Tribal Cavalry to fight for Caesar.

Gallic Cavalry with attached General and retinue

Having procrastinated for years, these brought me real joy and I did the models in a weekend, including hand painting all the shields. These aren't anything special, but they are special for me - I even tried a dappled grey for the Chieftain as a stretch goal. To be honest, it took a few goes.

Look at those great Gallic moustaches!

I've done something a bit different with the basing too - I wanted to depict them as a thundering mass of terrifying horse flesh bearing down on the trembling legionaries of Pompey Magnus. So they are on deeper bases to give them space for dynamic placement, and I chunked one of them up with even more figures to depict the attached General and his retinue.

I bought the figs second hand, and while I'm certain the Command figs are Crusader models, I'm not sure about the rest.  All are metal though, so these bases have a very satisfying heft when you pick them up :-)

So there they are - a dozen 28mm mounted figs for 120 points, pending any hand painted shield bonuses. If AHPC is about pushing oneself, either in productivity or new styles, then these Cavalry models have certainly taken me out of my comfort zone and helped me round out this Army project. Thanks for the encouragement!

From Millsy: I'm really pleased to hear you've enjoyed painting these Paul given how much you dislike cavalry as a general rule. Sometimes once you start enjoying something it sticks so maybe in future mounted minis won't present such an obstacle. Your end product here is absolutely smashing I have to say and if mine had come out so well I'd have been equally pleased. Beautiful work especially the shields which I'm awarding an extra point each. Cracking effort mate!

From TomL: Travel with the Cart, 65 points

Taking us to the Travel section via the library cart is Calamity Jean - another Bob Murch Pulp figure from the Dangerous Dames 2 set.

Looking through all my primed miniatures earlier for that still missing fantasy sorceress, I saw some long forgotten western miniatures. Suddenly the Travel section of the library had an entry as I remembered the family vacation we took back in 2007. We flew out for a family wedding in Las Vegas, drove through the Hualapai reservation (home of the terror inducing Skywalk) and took a train to the grand canyon with our kids. There were cowboys singing & performing magic tricks along the way but the big event was the train robbery.  Mounted bandits stopped the train and boarded our car - almost as if it was planned.  They came through telling really bad jokes and asking for coins from the kids. They of course posed for pictures (and more tips) while doing it. All while waving authentic replica guns (solid cylinders) in the air.  Lawmen chased them away and ’arrested’ them outside. They then rode off while we continued on. It was a fun and scenic train ride.

Wait. You really liked my jokes?

In memory of that trip I present several figures from Brigade Games Western line (plus a random figure stored with them) bought after that vacation.  These were painted using Two Thin Coat and Foundry acrylic paints.

Points - 65.
5 28 MM figures @5 = 25.
Library Travel section -  20.
Sarah’s cart - 20 points.

From Millsy: You can never have enough gunfighters Tom, especially female ones which remain quite scarce in current ranges. Bob Murch does a good line in female characters and you've done a great job on this one, breaking the mold by painting her up in a much more vibrant scheme than you'd expect. The others are equally cool but I do especially like that bright red hat! Lovely work mate.

From Reilly: Goblin Shaman (25 points)

Here we have yet another entry into the 'Old World Player sifts through his decade old stash of fantasy stuff' collection. A humble goblin shaman to join my many, many others. Here's hoping he doesn't explode with badly channelled winds of magic...

One of several Elder Spider-Shamans for the force

His Ritual dagger is quite handy when it comes to making
sacrifices to the 8 legged old gods...

A classic GW sculpt and always a favourite of mine, this lil guy was a pleasure to paint and get back into the swing of painting wayyyy too many goblins.

I'll claim the fantasy bonus to up the points to 25 total, and another 3 skullz

Happy Painting,
"Right Stuff" Reilly

From Millsy: The only right way to do gobbos is wayyy too many, right Reilly? You've done a stellar job on this wee chap, especially his clothing which really pops. The blending on his hat is superb! I've got the same mini in my collection and it's amazing how different they can look. 25 gobbo points for you!

Hello Friday my old friend...

Millsy

From RayR: Fantasy Bonus Round - 3 x Star Wars Imperial Walkers (80 points)

Well you don't normally see something like this from me, do you?

I bought these along with some other bigger figures a few years ago. I knew they'd come in handy for the painting Challenge one day.

I think they're made by Hasbro, they are 70mm tall so I guess they could be used for either 2mm or 6mm figures, depending on  your choice.

They were quick and easy to paint if I'm honest, a coat of grey, inked very dark grey, then highlighted twice with light grey and white.

Just for scale here we have a 25mm Trent mini

It took longer to put on the snow effect, which cost more than the figures did!!
They maybe Sci-Fi/Fantasy figures but I quite like 'em!

Fantasy: Tolkien? GRR Martin? Any fantasy hack actually. Have at it!

I'm pretty sure Star Wars fits into this bonus round?

As for the points?
I'm really not sure, so I'll leave that up to my luvvly Minion Teemu.
but I do get the.....
20 Bonus Point for the Fantasy Bonus round

TeemuL: Fantastic Fantasy walkers from Ray "Fantasy" R! Or was it Ray "Floppy Hat" R? Anyway, all Star Wars is fantasy, some people consider it is science fiction (which is fantasy, too), but there is no science in Star Wars, pure adventure. They might have been easy to paint, but nevertheless I think they are about the size of a WH40K dreadnought, which are considered 28mm vehicles or 20 points. So that's 80 in total.

From RayR: Haitian Revolution - Revolting Slaves with hand weapons (90 points)

I've been working from home this week, which has allowed me to also get a little painting done as well.
You may remember from past Challenges or on my blog, I've been building up all the sides for the Haitian Revolution??

Well for this years Challenge, my plan is to get some of the final figures I need all painted up.
In June at the Broadside Wargames Show, I plan to put on a Revolution game There's not a great deal of info on the actual bttales that were fought, but I think I've found one that could make a great game.

For this un-named battle I need a few more figures, surprise surprise!

Here we have another 18 revolting slaves carrying handweapons, ok some do have pistols, but its the swords and daggers that count.

Rear view!

Lastly I thought I'd split the 18 into two. On the right are Trent Miniatures Slaves with handweapons, while on the left are Foundry Pirates, some with head swaps some just painted with brown skin as I couldn't be ar$ed to cut more heads off.....I have been ill you know!

So to the points
18 x 25mm figures at 5pts each gives me a total of  90 points!

TeemuL: 90 points it is. You do undestand, that working from home means you need to work from home, not paint at home? :) Of course you save time when not driving to the work place and it is easier to paint a little bit during lunch and coffee breaks or even during Teams/Zoom/etc session.

These look fine, very nice colours, bright and tidy. Non-uniform scheme means the painting might be slower, but it might be more interesting, too, and you have been painting these unofficial troops a lot in the past, so you know what you are doing.
