From Lorenzo: Mixed Bag - Noggin, Nottub and Namreg (Points 75)

So I don't forget here is my library map.
Well this is certainly a mixed bag this week.
First up back to my childhood and as it happens a friend who likes Oliver Postage, Smallfilms and Noggin the Nog. My friend will be getting this figure as a gift, it is a subject they still enjoy despite the ravages of dementia.
This was a sudden purchase from the little soldier company. Very prompt service.
I painted the 28mm Noggin conventionally although I did use snakebite leather Citadel Colour Contrast to "line/shadow" the white primer.I also played a bit with citadel washes and contrasts on the red tunic. Frankly the 20 year old Baal red on his shoes was as good as last weeks blood angels on his tunic. Elsehwere I used a traditional mix some paint to get three purple colour for the cloak. And I used Citadel Colour Contrast Nazreg Yellow over some Vallejo gamers colour gold. A contrast over the conventional green leggings does not show as they were too close together. You do have to plan your overcoats of contrast and experiment. That is less attractive for large numbers of figures in production I guess.
Then it was some Peco railway grass and a GW sand mix to finish the base. I would like 5+20= 25 points for this childrens character please. Turning to Sci Fi I offer up "Namreg the Breather". a 28mm character He came from a free sprue of Panzergrenadiers off a recent Miniature Wargames Magazine? or maybe it was WI? Except he did not look this way on the sprue. I took a basic figure then tweaked a luger with some spare sprue and also cut some more for the face unit. Plastic rod from the bits box provided the cyclinders while the hose was a discarded flosser minus its handle. A spanner got painted up as some sort of "whizzy doctor who type sonic screwdriver" tool.
I primed the result in white and shadowed with snakebite leather. Then the trousers are a VJ bright blue covered in a dark blue citadel contrast while the jacket was done in VJ game colour beasty brown again covered in snakebite contrast. The cylinders were finished in Magos purple while I felt an armband was required to show he is a militia type.
I did a couple of highlights - the gun barrel got game colour heavy black green then VJ lime green spot and VJ ivory white spot. while the visor unit got good old (20 years!) Citadel Mechrite Red then VJ Game colour orange fire and again VJ ivory white spot. The breather unit gauze was VJ gamer polished gold with nazdreg yellow contrast on top. I could see these for real but the photos don't show them very well even in close up. I would like 5+20 points for this character and library section. Finally I am taking a chance here to visit the manga/graphic novel section courtesy of DeathZap wargaming pastor
I was really taken with the Hominids on his blog and as it happened also saw some "crappy soldiers" at a toy fair in Doncaster at Xmas and thought why not have a go. Here is another link to the Pastors "how to make Hominids" I copied his method just mixing up the top highlight with GW Mechrite red and some white to make a nice pinky colour over blood angels contrast over GW mechrite red over snakebight leather contrast. Maybe there is no story book yet..... - but the Hominid, in my case Nottub Reidlos looks suitably odd and scary for this library section?

So thats my contribution to manga etc. and just maybe they will appear in my own TACFOS story I reckon my 28mm hominid Nottub Reidlos earns me 5 + 20 points = 25 points. so if all is permitted thats three figures and three sections 25+ 25 + 25 = 75 pts. Not sure if I will manage another submission before we end the challenge which is currently a set of figures that are not quite working for me. Anyway its been a great challenge for me and very satisfying. Thanks especially to Sylvain for all his ideas, themes and assistance to this rooky.

Sylvain: That Noggin is a cute little fellow. You have an interestingly weird submission this week, well served by your paint job. I hope you enjoyed your first participation in the Challenge!

From SimonG: Roman Shields, Zombie Aladdin and a Brace of Nogs (119 points)

After last weeks plain diet of Romans my offering this week has something for everyone I hope. Before I get to the main dish however I have an amuse bouche -- the hand painted shields that I had not had delivered in time for last week.

These are 1st Corps rounded edge scutum which I think are closer to the shields used in the Jewish war. They were free hand painted and edged and annotated in fine marker in a style to suit legio V Macedonica. I discovered to my chagrin that fine markers scratch metal very easily so there was a lot of fixing and filling needed -- no such problem on plastic or even other harder metals. Anyway at gaming distance I think they look pretty decent.

A Visit to World Cinema

Our first main stop this week is to the studio lot where an Estonian director is directing an adult take on Disney's Aladdin in which Aladdin is a Zombie ...

... Who rides an ancient Egyptian centaur ...

... And there are three versions of Abu, all of whom are malignant Imps!

These are all 40mm scale plastic sculpts -- the Aladdin and the Imps are from Descent: Legends of the Dark and the Centaur is from the Black Rose Wars Inferno supplement. Shown here next to a Victrix Roman to get a sense on scale.

What I really enjoyed with these three pieces (beyond some great sculpts) was the chance to really play with techniques -- for the Ninja/Assassin/Aladdin figure the choice of brown tones with the pop of colour in the sash and the leaves, plus working on smooth gradations for the air effect.

On the centaur I played around with OSL for the first time -- the magic spinning chain saw thingies casting an eerie green glow across the upper torso (a mix of a sliver layer paint and a bright green layer).

And with the Imps getting each to be a distinct character, to use colour carefully with the only red in the Toadstools -- and two sorts of magic effect (the water and the green twinkly wings) -- using a mix of gloss and matte varnishes to make the various effects pop.  This probably the most complex figure I've had to work on for overlapping figures, so lots of back and forth correcting over painting as you put in each colour!

Just Stopping Off at the Gift Shop

Finally for this week we're swinging by the Gift Shop with a present for my Wife's birthday coming up next month. The present is a presentation set of the main characters from Noggin the Nog in the white metal versions from The Little Soldier Company.

Painting was straight forward using the LSC references with simplification of details to suit the cartoon style. I think I liked how Thor Nogson turned out best!

Totting Up the Results

My totals for today are:

  • 49 points for the three Aladdin figures (two 40mm foot and one mounted, I'll count the three imps as one larger figure) including the 20 point World Cinema bonus
  • 60 points for the Noggin the Nog set (8 28mm figures plus a 20 point gift shop bonus)
For a total of 109 plus anything our illustrious Minion thinks the ten hand painted shields might be worth!

So far I've stopped off at four Green Zone locations and have one more before I'm done -- next stop another journey with Lady Sarah will take me to the 1980s!

Nice work on those shields, Simon, but it's the centaur that steals the show for me. Oh, and what a great gift for your wife! For the shields, I believe that 1 point each is customary.

From JonathanO: The SAGAS of Noggin the Nog - At various locations of the Chambers of Challenge XI (150 points)

I did not intend to do a really late post, but I realised that I still had time to make my points target.  I finished off a few figures that were in progress and completed a few more.  This is a bit of fun to finish off with and I hope you won't mind if I visit 5 additional locations in the one post.

I present some miniatures from the Little Soldier Company that were based on the characters from the children's books and TV series "The SAGAS of Noggin the Nog".

At the Hall of Heroes we have Noggin and queen Nooka:

Retracing my steps through rooms already visited, I get to the Hatchery.  Here we find Nogbad the Bad and his crows hatching a plan:

At the Armoury there are two Nog soldiers:

The Gallery of Ancestors features Noggin's parents King Knut and Queen Grunhilda:

Finally in the Guardroom, NOT keeping a close eye on the treasures of the Nogs are these two sleeping Nog sentries:

The whole group:

I had planned to complete all the figures during the challenge, but plans change!  At least I got most done for this final entry.

So 10 x 28mm figures = 50 points , plus 5 x 20 for new locations visited = 100 bonus points.  For a grand total of 150 points to take me comfortably over my target.  Hurrah!

Thanks to Curt for allowing me to participate in another enjoyable Painting Challenge.  Thanks to Sarah for continuing to support this madness!  This could not be so awesome and big without the wonderful Minions - thanks to you all.  Finally well done all participants and thanks for sharing your superb painting, interesting and amusing stories as well as for supporting each other on this journey through the Chambers of Challenge XI.

Cheers,

Jonathan
