From SarahHC: Travelling Minstrel (30 Points - nope, its' 31!))

Hey Everyone

I’m thrilled to be finally posting my second entry for this years Challenge.

Snooping around on MyMiniFactory, I discovered this Flautist by STL Miniatures.

Something about her reminds me of the Pied Piper of Hamelin - I quite like the motion of her frock coat, flowing hair and her very carefree attitude.

According to Wikipedia, the folktale of the Pied Piper has its roots in the very real mystery of 130 vanished children from Hamelin in 1284.

One theory of the missing children is that the worthy burghers of Hamelin hired a rat-catcher to rid the town of its plague of rats. Trailing after the hypnotic notes of the rat catchers flute, the rodents politely filed through the city gate to their doom!

The town refused to pay the Piper and he then used the music of his flute to lure away the towns children.

Well, my flautist is not as sinister as all that …

I envision her as a merry minstrel and ‘maybe’ a little mischievous while she travels the highways and byways of her world.  I think her adventures, similar to the Pied Piper, could be made into a historical drama, right?

Painting this figure was a little challenging, but I am really pleased with the way she turned out.

After priming with black gesso, I dry brushed with a grey paint then I started the glorious red colour of her frock coat. But, then I realized that painting her face and hands was going to be difficult. Curt, being the most magnanimous SnowLord, gave me a lot of tips and suggestions and I did (this time) follow most of his recommendations. Full disclosure, Curt helped me with painting the flute and with her face and hands (but do I feel like I am getting a little more confident with the brush!).

Once the difficult bits were done I then proceeded to have way too much fun with the rest of her fashionable ensemble … a jaunty black brimmed hat with feather adornment and purple thigh high boots!

The basing was done according to Curt’s recipe … he literally stood beside me at the painting desk and gave me step by step instructions.

I even managed to cause Curt a bit of anxiety as I inadvertently left a paint pot uncovered and sadly the contents are no longer. Oops! (Actually, it was mostly used up -Curt)

Points wise, this is a 60mm figure, but let's round down to a 54mm which is 10 points, plus another 20 for the Historical Drama studio.

Next post … this is exciting, I get to play with the airbrush!

Sarah

Minion Miles: What a wonderful second submission - a superbly painted and stage musician - I really like how the figure is cast "mid-twirl" very nicely done.  Sadly, your point total is incorrect - it's actually 31 points as you've been awarded 1 bonus point for causing Curt some anxiety by leaving the paint pot open - it happens and I suspect the REAL culprit is Curt.  Off course, in the future, when I commit the same error I shall now hear a flautist in the background - my own personal soundtrack for mistakes!

From George S. - Arda - Lord of the Rings Gothmog, 28mm and Roman 60mm figures for Glorantha (145 Points)

It took me a while to start on this challenge but finally made it to have some things ready :)

So, I'm starting my trip on the Quadrant by Arda on the outer orbit. Something Tolkienesque...
Here we have the two versions of Games Workshop 28mm Gothmog, commander of the Orks.

About scoring , I think I get 15 points for them and 20 for the quadrant challenge..

 -------

Next stop on my trip will be Glorantha - Something Heroic something on quest..

So here we have a small group of Heroic Roman Praetorians with their officer fighting Heroic battles on their quest of conquer the world...(...??) The figures are 1:30 scale (60mm) made by Expeditionary Force. About scoring , there are 9 figures there X 10 points = 90 + 20 for the challenge = 110 points.

So if I'm correct I have gained 155 points and two cleared planets on the map...

With this first post I would like to thank Curt and all the people who are hardly working for this challenge!! Good luck and happy painting to all participants!!

'till next post...

Hi George - thanks for this submission. It is always cool to see LOTR figures - in fact, I was reading an earlier post from another Challenger and was shocked to learn that these fantasy books had been adapted into a series of films! Who knew? This builds on my fascination with the setting :-)

But setting that aside, I would really love to know more about these Roman figures - and how did you do the shields? Decals? Freehand? I'm always threatening to paint Romans, and handling the shields stops me about 99.9% of the time...so well done. In all, that will be 145 points for you.

A reminder to all participants - we do have a whole three months, so feel free to space out those visits to different plants, alright?

One more figure from my "Cherilea" 60mm Indians set witch is still around my table...
Painted as stated before, in a vintage "Toy Soldier" style with some realism elements. One more figure for my collection under the project " paint one of each.."!

I just noticed that I didn't paint the earrings!! Oh god!!

That's all for now. Hope you like my "Priest"

From George S - Cherilea 60mm Indians Repainting project - 20 points

Hi there, two figures just for points for today. These are 60mm figures but you can count them as, classic 54mm scale for scoring.

I have cleaned up and prepared 11 of these figures in order to repaint-remodel them for my collection.
Finally the first two of them are ready. I choose fancy colours for them in order to look more like toy soldiers of the 60-70s( as they actually are!) , than realistic models. Although I couldn't keep my self from adding some more realistic elements.
The base is painted as closer to their original green colour and the pallet of chosen colours is randomly selected from small paint remaining on the figures before cleanning up.
Of course the skin on these figures  wasn't painted in their original state but I couldn't just leave it this way..

Check out my blog to see more pictures of the original state and the preparation some weeks before..

9 more to come....Hope you like them :)

'Till next time....

What a great project George - I enjoyed reading more about it at your blog too. A wonderful thing to breath such life into 50ish year old toy soldiers. The colours are very thematic and the skin tones are great!

20 points on the board and I'm looking forward to watching this project progress.
