From JezT: Post 7 - AVBCW Gun Crew - 25mm (30 points)

Hi All

Change of scene for me and managed to paint up some Empress Miniatures WW1 figures but using these as reinforcements to my mythical mid 1930's A Very British Civil War Police Regulars - hence painted up in the dark blue!

I find these Empress are true 25mm figures so quite slight but this fits in with my other Police

Its just the 6 x figures being submitted but posed them with some Warlord vehicles and a WW2 Home Guard "Smith-Gun" which nicely suits the theme. We play AVBCW using Bolt Action rules. I bought the gunners to fit with the Smith Gun and I also now have some extra Command and a Medic.

another Squirrel period to tick off - only on 2 so far so no dangers to the leaders here but hoping to get to a personal challenge of 6

So overall a simple 6 x 5 30 points.

Cheers Jez

From TeemuL: Very nice and british police officers and you did really change your theme here. :) A Very British Civil War has interested me a long time now, even though I'm not British. But so are many other settings. :) Neat paint job and very nice vehicles, I'm very much fan of those mid/early war armoured cars.

From JezT: AVBCW 25mm (55 points)

 Hi All

Another squirrel point for me as posting some Interwar stuff - here using Bolt Action rules in the mythical A Very British Civil War period - have been building up my stuff over the a few years on the challenge.

My "go to" manufacturer for vehicles is First Corps and now got another large truck - this is technically a German truck. Have to say you get your money's worth for the vehicle as it is a big imposing truck. With it I have a couple of Pulp figures from the gangster range that I have painted with the Mosely inspired British Union of Fascists BUF armband.

Able to use truck as "Mortar Lorry" with homegrown mortar - this option is in the Bolt Action Campaign Gigant book

Also added some reinforcements to my London City militia squad - the "Men in Black and Bowler hats". These are from Empress Miniatures and as they are sold as 19 century German radicals and revolutionaries, I am not sure they are too impressed to be painted up as City bankers - the sub machine gunner is another Pulp gangster figure.

Altogether 55 points and another squirrel to the tally.

Cheers Jez

The truck looks great, but I'm not sure how safe those mortars are! Well done on the BUF armbands. I think of Jeeves with your militia, but I think/ hope he'd be above a lot of it.

From Jez Todd: Week 11 AVBCW - More Stuff 65 points

 Hi All

This week I went back to AVBCW era for some painting as especially wanted to finish some vehicles. First up though is my force commander - rather suitably for my pro-government "conservative" forces I am using the Wargames Illustrated Giants in Miniature character figure of Lord Kitchener.

                                         "Your Government Needs You"

I have two new vehicles. First up is from First Corps and is the civilian open top car, which I decided to make into the army staff car for the General. Did a quick head swap for the ciyy driver and filed away to amend another civy supplied figure as I specifically a replica model of the General to be in the vehicle - my starting inspiration was the moustache which I thought matched!

Keep your eyes on the road driver - maybe better head swap position next time!

That meant that for the proper Warlord Games staff car vehicle I decided to paint up as another police car squad vehicle.

Finally I have a couple of extra character figures, although this could be the start of a "Downton Abbey" militia type squad..... these are from Footsore.

Ah Prince of Wales check pattern if I'm not mistaken. Am perpetuating the British class system so only his Lordship gets the better grassland tuft for the base - nothing for the plebs!

Altogether that should be 2 vehicles for 40 points plus 15 for the three characters and 10 for the driver and vehicle commander so 65 in total! Smashes me through the 500 point barrier!

Have a great week all ....Cheers Jez

From DaveS - Defenders both alien and human - (93pts)

The first thing in this post is some more of my 28mm WW2 resistance fighters from Warlord games, that are probably destined for Bolt Action and AVBCW.  These are all armed with shotguns, and are probably destined to be poorly armed and experienced troops making up numbers in Bolt Action, while they will probably have a more important role in AVBCW

Next up, work on my Wild West Exodus Watchers has continued.  Firstly, I completed the Viridian Chigoes from the starter box.  Not much to say except that I am still only approximating what colour "Viridian" actually is.

Next were 4 more "Grey Elite", also built with jump packs.  Given the number of these I have, I suspect that this will be a very mobile force, although I still have no real idea how they work on the table.

With the others I had already done

Finally, I have the Magenta Alpha, another "Boss" for the game, this time described in the lore as an Apex Predator.

As with all of these larger models, the big challenge has been deciding which bits are "skin" and which are armoured plates.  Ultimately, it appears that I have had to make some arbitrary decisions, but I think that they have turned out alright.

So, that should come to

5x28mm Partisans = 5x5 = 25pts

4x40mm Greys = 4x7 = 28pts

3x54mm Viridians = 30pts

1x54mm Magenta = 10pts

Giving a total of 93pts

From: Jez Todd Week Seven AVBCW Vehicles - 50 points

 Dear All

Hi from the end of week 7 of the Challenge. This week continuing the AVBCW theme and managed to add a couple of vehicles. We'll be playing using Bolt Action rules and want all my squads to be mobile.

Adding in a couple of Warlord models, the 1940 Beaverette Armored car - painted up in a Police dark blue to be part of my mythical armed police squad. This was a 1940's Lord Beaverbrooke inspired "bodge up" using a civilian lorry and to try and cover up losses from Dunkirk, perfect for the setting! Also a standard truck. I also managed to paint up the First Corps excellent petrol attendant set.

Just put these together in a couple of diorama shots. I think 50 points for the two vehicles and figure plus added 5 for the petrol pump paraphernalia.

Have a great week. Cheers all Jez

From Jez Todd: Week 6 - AVBCW Character (5 points)

 Hi Everyone,

So far managing to keep to my own personal challenge of posting once a week with something. This week only a single 5 pointer figure though.

The figure is part of the Wargames Illustrated "Giants in Miniature" range and is the Adrian Carton De Wiart figure that I bought for myself as a Christmas present! Apparently only 500 of these are made and according to the card I got mine was number 247/500. Please check out the website for the figure background as he has a fascinating history - a Belgian aristocrat who fought in WW1 and II. The figure was perfect for me as a character for my AVBCW campaign troops.

In front of Stratford Upon Avon Town Hall

I am building up government forces for a game using Bolt Action rules but set in the mythical campaign of a 1930's British Civil War. Rather than a  squad member I thought I would use the figure as a spy character for some scenarios and added an armband with the British Union Of Fascists symbol. With his eye patch and one arm I think he looks the part!

AVBCW is mythical but if you are interested here's a link from a more academic historical magazine West Midlands History which has some interesting background and gives the BUF insignia.

So just a 5 points for me this week ..... have a great week ahead everyone!

Cheers Jez

From JezT: A Very British Civil War (85 Points)

Dear All,

Really happy to be able to post up these 25mm scale figures and vehicles so I am now all ready to start using Bolt Action rules to play games set in the mythical 1930’s campaign of "A Very British Civil War". This project was started last challenge and I am acting as the “establishment” with armed police and “Territorials” as my squads.

This photo gives an overview of the post.

First up is a nice machine gun squad. I think these are old Renegade WWI figures that I got second hand. They are great to paint and  it’s a shame no longer being made? Next up are two odd infantry figures that I did not do last year, posed against the Command car vehicle from 1st Corps.

Next is some serious firepower! This is a Lanchester armoured car model from Warlord Games – this is historically from 1929 and was used in early WW2. I just painted this the same basic brown colour as the army uniforms. This has one heavy and two medium machine guns. I bought the model before I really understood the Bolt Action rules so had to accept that this is the equivalent of putting a King Tiger down in AVBCW terms! I did not want to start an arms race with my opponent so downgraded the model by removing the turret and adding an open top version.

Finally I have a lorry, this one from 1st Corps.

Points wise that is 3 x vehicles, plus 5 x figures = 60 plus 25 = 85 points. Now to get round to playing the first game ....

Cheers Jez

Disarming to help your opponent? That is mighty sporting of you :) Personally, our group enjoys a good "arms race" among the rival collections - its the sort of thinking that helps fill our basements with stuff! But it makes sense to avoid models which can be a touch too dominant on the table, particularly as you set out for your first game. I'm sure the arms race can begin after that first game gets completed...

Some fine work here Jez, covering an assortment of minis and models for a very unique setting. That will be 85 points for you!

From JezT - AVBCW - Armed Police - 65Points

Hi All,

This is my first post for this competition. To say hello, I am Jez, a wargamer based in the UK near Coventry. I tend to do all 28 mm gaming mainly playing Basic Impetus games against local friends and my brother.  This is my third year as an entrant and pushing myself for 500 points. I love the painting challenge as a way of motivating yourself through projects. This year at least made sure I had bought some lead before the challenge started, in fact made the mistake of starting painting lots of projects but finishing nothing.

Anyway my first finished entry is actually a new project for A Very British Civil War genre, the mythical civil war set in 1938. We are going to use the popular Bolt Action rules - I am sure these are going to work well especially with the "Operation Sealion" booklet option with the Home Guard type extra rules. Anyway I will be the government forces player and armed police seemed an obvious category for a squad.

These are the initial squad, a mix of Footloose Irish Civil War and Foundry Victorian period police. These would benefit from some support so added in a Lewis light machine gun support, blended from some head swaps.

Also added a mounted command element, and as playing using Bolt Action I have a mounted and also a dismounted figure to use.

The mounted figures are from Foundry. In total this is 2 mounted and 9 foot so 65 points to get me started. If anyone has any recommendations for other manufacturers and figures that would fit the mounted police or foot theme please post.

Cheers and "chin chin" to defeating that Bolshevik and commie swarm  - Jez
