From KillianF: Medieval Medley plus many extras (185 points)

Good day all,

Between a return to work and a minor illness over the last few weeks I've found it hard to keep up. I have however managed to finish the following:

3 weeks' work

Medievals (Medbury Miniatures)

5 mounted hobilars

2 mounted knights

2 dismounted men at arms

2 archers

I 3d printed the blue and yellow shield on the left, which resulted in a straight layer line 3/4 of the way up. This actually assisted in dividing the shield for painting!

The colour scheme is deliberately anarchic, but I tried to pull all the shields into something similar. I will add some heraldry at a later date, and refine the mounted knights a bit more. These guys will see duty mainly in SAGA as Scottish or French, and also Midgard.

Napoleonics

5 Austrian Uhlans

On a whim I decided to smash out some of my 28mm Austrian Napoleonics. The cavalry are my favourite branch of this army, and Uhlans are my favourite cavalry type. Interesting uniforms, interesting history.

So here's 5 Uhlans of the 1st Regiment. 

 

Fellow on the right is missing a plume. Worse things happen in battle.

They are 3d prints by Piano Wargames. Before I print more I'm going to digitally remove the lance and leave a hole for brass wire: the resin lance bend at very slight temperature increases, and hot water straightening only lasts 24 hours or so. I went with a few varieties of horse colouration, my favourite being the piebald on the left. Overall an interesting painting experience: these are my first Napoleonics complete, so figuring out how to achieve each colour was a bit different to my normal, more freestyle, approach.

Afterlife (Anvil Industry)

4 Unity Council Special Operatives & Gabriella Aguilar

I've always had a soft spot for Anvil Industry's Afterlife range, and they've spent the last four years or so updating them as part of their digital range. These guys are essentially stealth suited deniable operatives, up to all sorts of dirty trick.

They were painted by priming black and then drybrushing a couple of layers of grey up to a very light coat of near white. They then received an all-over wash of Payne's Grey ink (possibly my single favourite colour) mixed with AK Interactive matte varnish (as seems to be tradition with all the Anvil Industry models I paint....). The lenses and weapon sights were then painted with titanium white, given a very small black wash at the edges, and finally Tamiya Clear Yellow was applied over the top. Like my zone raiders, it's not very tactical. However it does give them some colour, and ties them into the scheme I've used for the rest of my Unity Council faction, who all likewise have yellow visors.

I painted Gabriella with a deliberately darker skin tone. A paler skin tone would have increased contrast, but I've just painted several dozen models with white skin and I wanted some variety. The base is Vallejo Cavalry Brown, highlighted by mixing the brown with Vallejo Beige-Red and then Titanium Buff. 

Epic Armageddon 

6 Steel Legion Chimera IFVs

I smashed out these for my small Steel Legion army. These are 3d prints available online for free (Mk Hand Industry). For absolutely no good reason I magnetised the turrets. Epic is, in my opinion, the correct scale for Warhammer 40k: it actually gives a sense of scale. I tried to add a camo pattern by spraying tan over the brown basecoat through medical gauze. It didn't quite work as planned unfortunately, probably because the spray cans are too high pressured. Still, the tan colour works, so I'm rolling with it. They will get based at some point, to match the Steel Legion infantry currently being painted.

Spaceships

And lastly, I painted two space ships. 

 

They are more 3d prints, from a designer called Grand Fleet Admiral, that have been hanging around on my desk for about 2 years. These will likely see use in the second edition of A Billion Suns. The schemes have been kept simple, so they were pretty quick to paint. My airbrush is out of commission at the moment, so I used a dry brush followed by white ink to paint the engines. Quite a nice and simple project to clear some models off the desk. I have no idea what the claim points wise. Probably 2 points a piece?

This is a great mix of things .I am always a fan of any lancers , te colours on Austrian ones are cool. Definitely worth replacing the lances with a metal version . think the space ships are my personal favourite . 185 it is with a little spaceship bonus.

From PeterB - Chaos Epic - 42 points

 Morning all from sunny South East England. As I write this I am being blinded by perfect model painting daylight. So, what have I been up to this week? Well, with challenge studios completed (apart from the Directors chair) I am going to have to rely on volume of models now for points rather than bonus points. So, I decided to switch to 6mm?

Yep, last challenge I was painting my Epic Armageddon Chaos undivided army and there is still some left to do. I'm not sure whether I will eventually use the Epic 40K rules for playing with these models (the latest rules don't really cover all the Chaos models I have) so for now I am just painting models that take my fancy and then going from there.

The other issue of course is unless I want to spend a fortune on Ebay, I'm struggling to find original models so this is a long slow project.

Firstly I have painted 14 of what I think are Disc riders of Tzeentch, although they don't look very disc like. I read on a blog somewhere that people weren't initially impressed with the sculpts of these and I must agree (hence why I skipped over them last challenge) but they do have some detail when you paint them.

They are from the original plastic sprues that also had all the infantry options as well.

As I said original GW models are pricey second hand as I'm sure you all know. Proxy models for Epic are also few and far between but I did find these great Sparta APC vehicles from Vanguard Miniatures. They come with double sided top hatches, plain and Renegade, so of course I chose the Renegade side.

They will make great alternatives for Rhino transport for my Marines.

The paint scheme is fairly simple with GW Macragge Blue covered with an old blue ink wash I still have from the 90's. (those old citadel paints really last don't they?)

I am not sure what this guy is officially known as. He was in a pile of second hand epic bits I was donated by a friend. At first I thought he was a 28mm scale familiar, so he was moved to a different box. Turns out though he is from the Epic range, possibly a Demon Prince, or Giant Bloodletter?

He is certainly giant sized for Epic, to the top of his head he is 2cm.

Finally some more from Vanguard miniatures. In the chaos army list there is mention of Death Wheels and I thought these fit the bill pretty well.

The remainder of my hobby time this week gave me no points for the challenge. Whilst I was delving through my Epic models I realised I had not added the flock to the bases of any of my Orks, so once the chaos models had been given a good flocking, I continued on with the hundreds of Orks. Well, at least they are done now...

PeterB: Epic Chaos Space Marines + puppies [Coruscant] - (200 points)

Briefly, can I just say as a first time challenger I am really enjoying this. I didn't know what to expect but I am amazed by the vast variety of manufacturers and historical periods/fantasy worlds represented so far this year. Unfortunately as I commented yesterday on GeoffreyT's post, this just means that there are too many things already I want to buy and add to my lead pile (thus ensuring I will want to join the challenge next year to clear the pile again.)

Anyway, so consulting my star chart I believe I have already cleared 4 planets:

Arla - The Balrog

Vulcan - Legolas

Babylon 5 - The Dire Wolf

Quick yacht trip - Female Knight

Istvaan V - Iron Snake Space Marine

Therefore I shall be leaping into the middle ring on to the planet Coruscant with the theme Good vs Evil. Well what can be more evil than the armies of Chaos, in 6mm scale. 

Yep, whoever decided we should wargame in 6mm could be considered good, for we can now easily create massive fields of battle in the comfort of our own homes with just a dining table (possibly extended with the middle leaf folded out) and a green baize tablecloth.

Yet, they could be considered evil, for expecting us to paint details so tiny, it makes me weep, weep the tears of a man who has painted the pauldron trims on Space Marines in 6mm, or freestyled the symbol of Khorne on both sides of the banner flags on the back of  30 Juggernaughts of Khorne.

I have also been working on a project that I should have actually been painting instead of swanning around the planets painting random things from my lead pile. I am actually currently working on a fantasy halfling army for Dragon Rampant and fell in love with these guys at Salute this year:

I am not claiming these for any particular planet. Just their points. They are pretty tall for halflings if I am honest, so I am hoping Millsy will allow me to claim 10 points a pop for them.

For the points then:

30 x Juggernaughts of Khorne in 6mm scale. 30 points

2 x vehicles in 6mm scale. 4 points

12 x minotaurs in 6mm scale. 6 points

20 x Khorne Space Marines in 6mm scale. 10 points

Some great Epic scale Chaos stuff here Peter! I'm both horrified and seriously impressed that you hand painted (!) all those Khorne symbols at 6mm scale. Crazy stuff mate. I honestly can't decide which unit I like best from the Chaos stuff, it's all just wonderful.

I've been unimpressed with the Mantic hobbits to date but I really like these. Which is bad news. First time challenger and you're already suffering from Challenge Temptation Syndrome (CTS) and giving me a good dose too.

A cracking entry mate. I'm rounding it up to 200 points because of all that Khorne symbol craziness. Belter!

From SamuliS: RED 'UNS GO FASTA! Sanders Sand dunes (68 points)

Rushing forward from the balloon landing ground is a bunch of reinforcements for my Epic Ork army. Sandor's Sand Dunes are the ideal location for the speed crazed greenskins in their red vehicles as like everyone knows "RED 'UNS GO FASTA!"

Two Landas and 4 bases of Warbikes to boost my warbiker count to have the maximum load for the two Landas. Warbikes are the Defeat in Detail Skinnerz bikers and the Landas are models from Thingiverse that I printed with my 3D printer some time ago. Painted with a paintshade from Vallejo called "Ferrari Red" to ensure that the Boyz are always speedy enough. Throw in some checkerboard patterns for good measure and no enemy can survive the onslaught.

8 mounted figures in 6mm and two vehicles. With about a 100mm wingspan and 70mm length the flyers are somewhere around the size of 20mm vehicles. 38 points from the miniatures and 30 extra points for the challenge island location.

Wow, just to be clear. WOW. Those Landas are fantastic.
