From ChrisW - Another 28mm variety pack (277 points)

Hello again

Thank you everyone for the nice welcome comments, very nice group!!

I must say I am enjoying the pressure that this challenge has created for me. For too long I have operated with no deadline, no reason to finish off projects, or even to start any projects. Now I feel under the gun to get stuff done each week, it is great!! I may even start to focus on one subject at a time, but so far that does not look likr it will happen any time soon.

So onto this weeks output. Some of this stuff just suddenly appeared in front of me, with no plans of being tackled. The robots were not in the pipe, but when I finally found the queens cape, and was able to match it up with the queen miniature it seemed that fate was telling me to get it done.  Similar tale for the cyclops. On the other hand some stuff just could not be finished in time, in part due to these distractions, and will be added to next weeks grouping (hopefully)

So here we go.

Up first are two 28mm vehicles, the tank for Back of Beyond, while the armored car is slated for Maximillian 1934. Both are from 1st Corps. The A/C has had it's crew modified via head swaps, and a lot of extra baggage has been added. The thought is that these guys are racing across the top of the world, gathering loot souvenirs as they travel. They may not be the fastest team but they certainly are good bargain hunters!

Red was the first week, while blue is this week.

Leaving Vulcan we travel next door to visit a B movie set for terror of the Cyclops! Shades of Sinbad this cyclops is from Black Tree Design. ( Previously painted poor unfortunate soon to be victim for scale only)

Then thanks to the Robot Queen we hop a ride aboard Sarah's Yacht our journey ends at Planet Skaro!

The queen and her giant robot entourage welcomed(?) us promising that we could (or was that would?) stay forever...The Queen and her entourage are from Hydra miniatures.

We found some other visitors stranded staying on Skaros, a VSF sub and crew. The ship is by Minifigs OOP and the crew is from Ironclad miniatures. All these figures will make it to Mars some day soon.

So the point total, well I may need some help on this.

The easy stuff

  • 40 points for two planets
  • 20 points tank
  • 35 points A/C + 3 28mm crew
  • 85 points British naval brigade 15 figures and 1 crew served pintel mount MG

Subtotal so far of 180 points

  • 7 points? Robot Queen
  • 40 points? Four Robots
  • 10 points? Cyclops
  • 20-40 points for the Submarine (it is one vehicle but is bigish)

Subtotal for the questionable points  87 points

So possible total of  267?

Help on scoring would be appreciated.

Sorry for the late on Tuesday submission, I am trying to set a new target day so that I am done my post by Monday.

Wow! What an eclectic points-bomb. No worries about it being submitted late on Tuesday - I keep checking until midnight UK time! However, I'd just like to note that it would be helpful if you put "draft" in the title while you are still editing it so that I know it isn't ready for me to minionise.

As for points, according to the Spreadsheet of Doom (TM) going with the points you suggest (and scoring the sub as 40 points) it comes out as 277 points for this post.

From MikeP: 6mm French Napoleonics and 28mm Victorian Civilians (45 points)

 Hello friends:

I'm very glad to be part of this year's Challenge, having participated in some and observed others, it's good to be back again.   My plan before March 20 is to focus on my current painting love, the Seven Years War, but who am I kidding, it will end up being a varied bunch of odds and sods.

Speaking of which, here are two regiments of French Napoleonic infantry in 6mm from Baccus, 48 little chaps in all if you count them.  I've learned to love this small scale because the overall effect is impressionistic, you want to paint the unit and not the figure.

The 6mm scale also gives an affordable way to create mass battles, which can look stunning with the attention to scenery.  The small scale also means I don't have to obsess over Napoleonic details that might get the pendants all worked up.  For example, these fellows are described in the Baccus catalogue as "1806-1812 Elite French Infantry" so I gave them all red shako plumes so I can call them Veteran or Elite troops as the game requires and easily pick them out on the table.

Much as I love Baccus minis, before the Challenge is done, I'm hoping to fire up my 3D printer after I overcome some out of the box teething issues and show you some of the amazing 6mm Naps being done by Turner Miniatures.

Next up are these four 28mm figures from Foundry in the UK, from their Victorian civilian range.   They are intended as table dressing for ACW era gaming, as well as for my alt-ACW US invasion of Upper Canada campaign.

They're painted using Foundry's tri-tone paint system, which I've slowly been learning to use.   I like to think the colour gradients can be seen in the grey suit and blue dress in particular.

I can't think of a way to connect these figures to any of the Quadrant planets, so I'll content myself with 45 points (48 x .05 plus 4 x 5).

Cheers and thanks for looking,
Mike P

Ave, Padre! Welcome back to the Challenge. Very neat work on the 6mm French Naps and nice use of the Foundry method on the Victorian civvies. Your maths is slightly off - that's 44 points, but I'll add 1 point for overcoming the stress of discovering that your blog invite hadn't worked!

From ArthurS: A Dynamic Duo! (10 points)

 Hoi,

As Arthur is only now learning to speak and read English, he's asked me to write his posts as usual. So over to the lad in, more or less his words:

"Hello Everybody, I am so happy to be allowed to join the Challenge again this year. I have upped my points target from 50 to 75 points, because I have taken to seriously building out my 40K Space Marines army. For this I have painted two characters for my own created Chapter the Power-Wings. These characters are the Chaptermaster with the workname: Taggie, (I know; don't ask...ed)  and a generic apothecary.

For Taggie's base I nicked one of Dad's Necromunda bases and tried to paint it a bit more gritty then usual, I hope you like them.

 Have a nice day! Arthur"

Well I really like the Lad is trying out new things like the base and he has tried to be more precise in his painting: i.e. not just splash a good dab of paint in the general direction of the intended place on the model but actually trying to "paint-within-the-lines" if that makes sense.

When we play a game with these I will most definitely post pictures here. Anyway these two 28mm chaps should gain Arthur 10 points and prevent his culling ;-)

Cheers Arthur and Sander

Welcome back to the Challenge, Arthur! It's been wonderful to see your painting skills progress over the past few years. A well-deserved 10 points for these two space marines!

From MartinC - Lizardman Cavalry (171pts)

Hi all. this will be my 1st Tuesday crew post and the 1st of many to keep Tamsin on her toes. My lizardman army is progressing quickly (their 1st battle is scheduled for the 23rd, I will lose as it is a freshly painted virgin army in a genre I've not played for over 30 years. My only hope is that I'm play someone who has never played the rules before)

1st up some lizardmen cavalry, again Sundered Studios and these are cracking figures

9 Skinks mounted on bipedal lizards

Went for a red colour scheme on the mounts, they are about the size of camels

I really love the sculpts, they are individuals and have real sense of dynamism

No cavalry should advance without infantry support so a 16 lizard regiment of spearlizards

These are the last of the Wargames Atlantic figs and again owe much to the bits box, with long spear and shields adding to the unit

Painted a lizard eye on the shield boss and it looks effective, although they are basically wizard fodder

So 9x28mm cavalry with standard = 91pts
16 x 28mm infantry = 80pts
total 171pts

I'm on holiday rest of this week, but weather is chilly - yesterday was a record breaking 16oC but today is only 1oC. UK weather is weird.
That'll folks, Tasmin can I have a bag of nuts please and a pillow

And so my minioning duty begins! What a cracking post to start off with - the red of the mounts does contrast nicely with the green of the riders. This little lot will see you "sauring" up the points table.

Tamsin's Tawdry Tuesday

"Good morning Ladies, Gentlemen...and Ray. Thank you for choosing Snowlord's Peak Resort Station as the base for your exploration of Challenge XII Quadrant. We hope that your 3-month stay will be enjoyable and productive."

"For those of you who are new guests, my name is TamsinP and I am the Senior Steward and Morale Officer of this station. There are a number of other Stewards, some of them assigned to assist guests on particular days. There is also Miles, our resident Statistical Officer and Mathaumaturgician - if you hear any sounds of kittens or puppies in distress as you pass his Laboratory*, please pay no heed; we are informed that those noises are actually from the machines running his Spreadsheet of Doom (TM) and there are definitely no kittens or puppies inside."

"Additionally, Lady Sarah is operating a fast space-yacht service for our guests who wish to travel outside the space-lanes used by our standard exploration skiffs."

"We are of course all answerable to the stationmaster, Captain Campbell. He's the one wearing a Polish czapka which he thinks he looks rather good in (everyone else thinks he looks absolutely ridiculous). He did want all the crew to wear these uniforms this year:

"Fortunately, Lady Sarah and I prevailed after pointing out that seeing certain of our maintenance and janitorial personnel dressed in that fashion might deter guests and incur fines from the Interstellar Alliance Bureau of Public Taste and Decency."

"I am pleased to report that 54 of our expected 101 guests have arrived and begun their explorations of the Quadrant. Many have made use of the scheduled skiff services between planets and some have taken trips on Lady Sarah's Space Yacht. So far they have traveled a combined total of 7,661 parsecs; I believe that the overall pledged target for this "cruise" is 82,505 parsecs."

"For today's exploration reports, MartinC is sawing a head...sorry, "sauring" ahead with his study of reptilian life on Arda and ArthurS is doing something in the dynamics lab. I'm hoping that there will be more reports coming in later on, but those are the only two that I am aware of right now."

"Nurse Docherty will be handing out medications on Friday. We have a vast supply of coloured wax crayons (especially of the orange and purple ones so beloved of RayR and MartinC)."

Toodle-pip!
