From RhysH - Dwarfs and a Chaos Dwarf monstrosity

This is Rhys' entry for this week. He's wrapping up Thorin's Company and has finally finished his Mantic Games Abyssal Dwarf Hellfane. We're not sure what to point this thing out as, so we'll re-visit that after the jump.

First off though, is the last Dwarfs of Thorin's Company.

This is Thorin, and three other dwarfs whose names I can't remember and don't want to look up.

I've heard a story that even Tolkien couldn't really tell them apart. I choose to believe that story.

The sling shot is a bit silly.

Three more dwarfs. The one on the left as sympathetic to Bilbo. That gives him more personality than most of them.

They have a wide range of weapons. In the old rules that made play difficult.

In the new rules most of the rules for special weapons are gone. That is nice because it speeds play and simplifies the turn.

And here is the entire group. Gandalf, Bilbo, Thorn, Fili and Kili in the front. Dwarfs with various colored hoods in the back. And Gloin and Dwalin.

Next up is the Hellfane. This was a Christmas present and is a very large chunk of resin. Several large chunks actually; assembly is an Ikea level task.

I'm exceedingly proud of him for this paint job. He wanted to do lava on the base so I taught him about ripped up cork and he took it from there.

The three dwarfs on the top were painted separately and glued in at the end.

The engine at the back is very delicate and breakable.

We have no idea how this thing will play yet, but he REALLY wants to try it out.

The howdah with the big-bad and his two flunkies.

For score that's seven 28mm figures = 35 points
I am offering up a score of 35 for the Helfane as well. 15 for the three dwarfs and counting the beast as a vehicle for 20.

If that works out then this is a total of 70 points.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow!
Great to see the whole of Thorins Company, they look ready for some adventuring!
Im not really sure what a Hellfane is exactly -  but looks big, stompy and scary!I like the bronze of the howdah and what a cool use of cork bits for lava!

7 x 28mm = 35
helfane dwarves 3x  = 15
Beast 20

Another 70 points for you, way to go Rhys!

From CarsonG: First post (114 points)

Hello everyone!

My first post contains 2 very different projects that I have been focused on.

An Old World Chaos Dwarf of the original Big Hats

6mm Carthaginians for the Hannibal rules

Points=35 for the Chaos Dwarfs, not sure on the 6mm

Carson

From Millsy:

Well done Carson for squeezing in a post before the dreaded cut! I was starting to think we wouldn't get to see anything from you so I was pleased to see your draft waiting for me this morning.

I love a good Chaos dwarf and you've done a lovely job on some proper old skool stuff. Do you have enough for a full army? If so that'd be a treat to see.

You 6mm are the pick of the post for me though. Carthaginians are cool at any scale and en masse in 6mm they really look the business. It looks like 158 infantry to me from the photo which comes to 79 points all up (0.5 points per infantry fig).

Nice work mate to kick your Challenge off. Now keep up the momentum!

Cheers,
Millsy

From Rhunt - Space Marines, Elves and odds and sods (135 pts)

This entry is mostly Space Marines. I also have some more of the yucky to paint elves. I'm also adding my second Denethor model, a Greek hoplite and some Chaos Dwarf (Abyssal Dwarf) artillery.

First up are more of my new Space Smurf army.

My dad got me this model in Canterbury when he was in the UK in 2022. He built if for me right before the Challenge.

I can switch out the weapons but only painted this one so far.

I think I want decals but I haven't decided yet.

My next model is a High Elf archer. I still don't like these models. I can't wait to be done painting them.

Next up is a Reaper Bones model my dad gave me. He might be an elf warrior for Pathfinder of just another fighter.

I liked painting him better than the archer.

Next up is five more Space Marines. These are a lot of fun to paint and I like these models a lot. My dad didn't mind putting them together as much as he did the elves.

Here are close-ups of the Sergeant.

I also finished another five elves. The first archer was done last Sunday and I finished these on Friday.

Next up is another Denethor model. This one is brand new. My dad went to Warhammer World three weeks ago and got his one for me. Now I have two but this one is when he is trying to burn himself and Faramir and is rescued by Gandalf, Pippen and Beregond. This is for the Front Desk and New Acquisitions.

Next up is a Greek hoplite that my dad gave me. He said the Warlord hoplites suck and I'll hate painting it. He was right. But it was easy. This got me the history desk.

The last model is an Abyssal Dwarf (Chaos Dwarf) flame thrower crew from Mantic Games. My dad and I play Kings of War and my army is Chaos Dwarfs. This guy rolls 15 dice so it's really scary.

In Summary:

1 28mm Space Marine jeep @ 20 pts = 20 pts

5 28mm Space Marines @ 5 pts = 25 pts

1 28mm Elf Warrior @ 5 pts = 5 pts

6 28mm High Elves @ 5 pts = 30 pts

1 28mm Hoplite @ 5 pts = 5 pts

1 28mm Artillery flame thrower @ 10 pts = 10 pts

History Bonus = 20 pts

Front Desk and New Acquisitions = 20 pts

Total = 135 pts

Great work here Rhys, and a variety of pieces on display here! I also have issues with Elf models (too clean blah!) but you have done a great job getting through them. Love the Chaos Dwarf ( and who doesn't like a Chaos Dwarf! ) and hope to see more of them in the challenge!

If I could offer a piece of advice on the models, and its mostly personal preference, would be to paint the rim of the bases of the models a single color once the model itself is finished. Either in a straight black, an old school goblin green, or a color matching your gaming table. It will help to bring another layer of cohesion in an army or squad.

Looking forward to more paint bombs like this one in the future!

From KyleC - Dwarves (170 points)

I had hoped to get this on last week, but work got the better of me.. so here it is this week instead..

I have finished the last unit for my Chaos Dwarf army here as seen below:

A simple 20 man unit to finish off the basic troops there.

Then also tackled the Cereberus Cannon to go with the last posts crew..

Really enjoyed that. Just used a 100x50mm movement tray for its base to make it work out in the end!

And then tackled a 'few' character/hero models for the force to play with.

Big boy on his Cereberus Mount! A happy pup ready to tear the faces off of his enemies.. or go running after an undead giants leg if time permits..

Played with the torso of this model here. A bull centaur to lead the others, and also a on foot great weapon hero to kick things off when required!

Big man on foot here. Never know when you need to take the fight to the enemy while slogging it with the boys..

Proper little Sorceror and his Familiar. Ready to cast Turn to Stone or Fireball I am sure..

Last chap was found in our print pile.. no idea where or when I printed it or why even.. but a bagpipe with flames just seems about right for this army.. so gave him a lick of paint here.

I also attempted some OSL work on a skeleton. I 'may' have overdone the green on it.. and need to rework the glow aspect.. but it was a nice little trial all the same!

And just a completed army shot.. even got all the movement trays based up like the models bases to give them some cohesion and really finish the army off. A very comfortable starting army for Oathmark now completed here. Now to find the energy to tackle the Kobold side of things for them to face off against.. or finish the Undead.. or complete that Human one.. thankfully no Elves ( they are too fragile for my liking ;) ).

But yeah.. no idea if the points here correct.. but I put it as below.. correct as needed:

26 28mm figures = 130 pts

1 28mm calvary figure = 10 pts

1 28mm mounted monster figure = 20 pts? I dunno here.. hes big :D

1 28mm Artillery cannon = 10 pts

So 170 pts perhaps?

In any case.. happy to have another army finished here.. lets see what I can get done in the next 3 weeks left for the contest!

***

Wow Kyle, quite the assortment you have here. Some excellent brushwork, and it is always nice to see some fantasy stuff. I have not tried "Oathmark" myself, but I hear good things about it, and it is great to see others filling the gap so shamefully abandoned by GW when they nuked Fantasy Battle (and now busy themselves wanking at Warhammer Fantasy fans about how they are re-drawing maps of the Old World, but I digress).

Love the army photo, and I am impressed at the results you achieve with the GW Contrast Paint, another example of how all of the tools make a difference in the skilled hands of Challenge participants!

I have no quibble with your scoring, and appreciate the fact that you did not claim the mounter monster as "transformative of battlefield morale" or some similar nonsense - 170 points for you!
