From DrQ: An Arkanaut Ironclad in the Lair of the Great Beast (70 points)

For the Lair of the Great Beast we were instructed to paint something "monstrous and nightmarish, terrifying and humongous." I chose to interpret this as my personal dragon to slay in this competing—Arkanaut Ironclad for the Kharadron Overlords.

By any definition this thing was a beast: 152 components, on a 170 x 109 mm oval base, and sitting over 20cm high on my custom flight stand. It is also crewed by 6 figures as well.

I've been working on this thing literally since the challenge started, and I'm glad to have finally completed it.

As far as points, the vehicle is 20 points, the six figures are another 30 points, and the challenge bonus is another 20. For a grand total of 70, I believe.

From here there's nowhere to go but the Altar of the Snowlord!!!!

From DrQ: Kharadron Overladies (50 points)

As I continue to work on my great beast for its eponymous lair, I painted up some custom all-female Kharadron Arkanauts—Kharadron Overladies if you will.

The heads for these Kharadron Overladies are from an Etsy store called FlagshipGamesUS. They looked a little small when I first got them, but they wind up looking fine when actually on the bodies. Also, I used swords rather than axes for the whole squad. I have another box of Arkanauts lying around, and if I build them up as a male force I'll give them all the axes (conversely, I might build the other box as a Kharadron Blood Bowl team).

In order to differentiate the leader more easily, I used the topknot from a spare Stormcast Eternal head I had lying around.

Other than the head swaps, I've left the models as-is. The armour suites that the Kharadron wear are quite padded so any differentiation of silhouette would be hidden by the the padding. Additionally, I didn't really think that the usual "all women in heels" aesthetic that is found in so many wargmaes was something that the no-nonsense Kharadron would really have any time. A lack of beards would be enough. I found the post "Female representation in wargaming" by Between the Bolter and Me really helpful in making these design decisions.

As far as points, these are ten 28mmm foot soldiers for 50 points total.

Now back to the giant hulk of the Ironclad!

From DrQ: a Famous Brewer in the Gallery of Ancestors (25 points)

From the time the map was revealed there was no doubt in my mind as to the entry for the Gallery of Ancestors: Jakkob Bugmansson XI.

GW's fluff for this 2020 limited release reads:

The duardin. The myth. The legend. In times long past, the name of Bugman was a byword for quality amongst the people of the world-that-was, a brewsmith capable of producing the very best beverages the dwarves had to offer. Now, in the Age of Sigmar, another has risen to take his mantle – the Kharadron known as Jakkob Bugmansson XI!

Joseph Bugman was of course the legendary brewmaster in the old Warhammer Fantasy game—one of the first named sculpts in all of GW. As such distant descendent in Age of Sigmar seemed a fitting entry.

I tried to paint Jakkob in a similar style to my Kharadron Overlords, though with more silver and brass and less of the blue. There was an option to have him without helmet, but to be honest I don't particularly like the sculpt of his face (not a long enough beard for my taste).

I plan on running our beloved brewer as an Aetheric-Navigator hero in my Khardron army. While some may argue that he would make more sense as an Aether-Khemist, I think that his upturned tankard is clearly pointing the way to victory.

As far as points: five for the model and another twenty for the area bonus comes to a total of 25.

On to the Armoury where we will inevitably find that a good offense is the best defense (and has a lot of dakka dakka).

From DrQ: The Guardroom (50 points?)

Moving to the Guardroom, here are a unit of Kharadron Overlord endrinriggers. These chonky bois function in a unique capacity of flying cavalry that can repair the sky vessel of the Kharadron. That is to say, their role is to guard the gunships.

These guys are fun to paint. They are base coated in Vallejo gunmetal and then glazed of Citadel Gryphon-hound contrast and the old Guilliman Blue to get the colours before spot highlights of Vallejo silver. Instead of flight stands, they sit on various bits from CMON Wrath of Kings War Stompers that I picked up on a ridiculous sale earlier this year.

As for points: the endrinriggers sit at 75mm tall so I'm scoring them as 28mm cavalry for 10 points each or 30 points total, plus 20 for the area. So, a total of 50 points.

Also another 30 points for the GW side duel! WooHoo!

Now onto the Armoury Gallery of Ancestors!

From DrQ: Through the Aquifer on a Grundstok Gunhauler (40 points?)

For the nautical theme of the Aquifer I present a Grundstok Gunhauler from Kharadron Overlords. In the Age of Sigmar, some dwarfs (or Duardin™) have left their ancestor holds and taken to the sky in giant floating cities that are patrolled and supplied by a fleet of Sky Vessels. The Gunhaulers function partially as artillery platforms and partially as screens for larger ships in the Kharadron Sky Navy.

The Gunhauler is the small bois of the Kharadron fleet, despite the fact that they sit on a 105mm oval and stand at over 170mm on its custom flight stand. This is the second that I've painted, and I might add a third to my force before this pandemic is over. We'll have to see—I need to paint the gigantic Arkanaut Ironclad before contemplating any more purchases.

The flight stand is designed to look invoke the Pacific Southwest of the US. It's made out of pink foam and brass rods with pennies underneath to counter balance. The Gunhauler also easily comes off the base for storage.

Apologies on the quality of the photos. It's really hard to focus on something this big—especially when the whole thing is basically glazed metallics.

As far as points, 20 points for the Aquifer and 20 points for a vehicle is 40 total (there's two dwarves flying this thing as well, but I'll leave that to the minions to adjudicate if they count for extra).

Now down to the Adventurers' Landing!
