From AlanD - More Goths than a Cure Concert (200 points)

I've had a funny old challenge this year. I've been on long service leave (amazing - can recommend), but instead of painting masses of figures, I've used a lot of hobby time to think about some big projects, reorganise some storage and that sort of thing. Some of this is KenR's fault, as listening to his very entertaining Yarkshire Gamer's podcast has boosted my enthusiasm for the 'Reet Big' wargame, rather than the large skirmish sized battles I usually fight. As a result, I've been doing that thing that should only be attempted on long service leave: rebasing. My plan has been to use 50mm square bases to build up armies that can be used for To the Strongest, Impetus, Soldiers of Rome and other rank and flank ancients games I'd like to have a go at. The hairy blokes here will be used as Heruls, Gepids, Goths and whatever else seems appropriate.

Of the figures here, only 40 were actually painted in this year's challenge, so I'm claiming 200 points please Tamsin. They are a mix of Westwind, Footsore, Gripping Beast plastics and Wargames Atlantic, and I'm pretty pleased with they way they look en masse. I did have one varnishing disaster as 10 figures turned white when I sprayed them, thanks to Sydney humidity, but I managed to same them by recoating them with gloss and trying again under better conditions.

This will be my last submission for the challenge this year as I'm off to Madrid for a holiday. Thank you Curt and the Minions for making this madness possible, and to all the challengers (challenged?) for the inspiring entries you all keep coming up with. Especially those involving turnips.

They certainly look great, Alan! Sorry to hear that this will be your last entry of the year, but I hope you have a wonderful break in Madrid.

From Jez Todd - Week Eight - Goths (25 points)

 Hi All

Some Goths from me for this week - the historical kind! First up is a Footsore Goth Commander  - great fun to paint! The last shot is how I envisage him leading my Goths to victory ......

I also had a Footsore Saxon leader figure that thought would suit joining my Goth infantry. Last year  posted some Goths to bulk out my rear rank warbands but still wanted a couple more. I only had some of the Wargames Foundry late Roman infantry left over, so used these - one painted directly as a Goth and the other for my late Roman slinger skirmishers. That released a more Goth looking slinger to desert and join the warband. These are the three new infantry painted and a final picture of the basing with the other troops. They are based for Impetus - so its a Roman slinger skirmish unit in front of the Goths.

So one cavalry and three infantry - just 25 points for me, but keeps me ticking along. Have a great week painting everyone!

Cheers Jez

From JezT: Gothic Wars Part 2 - Goth (110 points)

Dear All,

Second part of this batch of figures. Always a soft spot for Goths as my first unit for the challenge four years ago was a unit of Goth Archers. As normal these are all based for use playing Impetus - in this submission I was painting some new rear rank foot figures to create a better looking deep warband. Previously was just using some skirmishers to represent a back rank ... no wonder I kept losing .........

The unbased figures are:

These figures are all Foundry with an odd horse from somewhere. Firstly just added one cavalry scout figure to an existing base to give 3 cavalry on a base, which is my usual amount for light cavalry. Pleased to do this as the scout base was from another competition entry and the missing odd figure was bothering me. I like the pointing figures here in the final basing.

Next up we have the foot figures and here I based as a 5 figure back rank with a switch to put the standard bearer on the front base of an existing unit. These are the finished full warbands with the new 10 figures mainly at the back.

Finally have the extra unit of Goth cavalry.

I have now got all my Goth cavalry in one file box with some skirmishers which is an Ostrogothic Basic Impetus army in a box - this has the typical 10 units to fight a battle. All cavalry with some screening archers - no point being defensive with this army it needs to get stuck in.

The Goths are very flexible so if I switch and add in foot I can play a more Visigothic army and of course all the Goths can be part  of a Late Roman army as federate troops.

All together the new figures are 6 cavalry and 10 foot so should be 110 points.

Cheers Jez

I opened this post thinking that maybe it was about combat between fans of Sisters  of Mercy and those of Fields of the Nephilim but, no, it's about those ancient folks who sacked Rome!

Nice additions to the army Jez..

Jez Todd - Goth Scouts -(25 points)

Hi All

Only a small cavalry base so just 20 points to add. This base will be used in the Basic Impetus 2 army options which for the Goths have a cavalry scout unit option. Just did these up quickly and they are two Wargames Foundry figures. Did an arm swap to create the pointing figure and a hand swap  for the other figure just to add variety.

That looks like it will be it for me ... possibly a few extra cavalry and our "Curtgeld" (Matt and I working as team) to post on the weekend.

Thanks to all as really enjoyed being part of the group - time to start playing more games now!

Cheers Jez

Nicely done, Jez! You are not far off in your calculations, but I'm the gleeful fellow that appreciates free hand shields and banners. Plus you performed conversions which my favorites are ones that I can't find ! ;)
Since I am going to be fired in the morning, I'll summon the last bit of minion powers granted by the Snowlord and pip this entry 5 points for shield work and appenadge swap...just don't tell Curt about the side points!
It has been great fun getting to preview your work, The best part of minioning IS the backstage pass for previewing the work. It is supposed to be work, but it seems more like guarding a candy shop!
I do hope you get a few more completed, and do enjoy your game time. Perhaps these freshly painted fellows will avoid the curse and perform exceedingly well...or at least last beyond turn 1! ;)

Jez Todd - Goth 25mm figures(65 points)

Hi thanks for letting me join the painting fun. Been war gaming since the mid 80's and always painted my own figures although quite a basic style.

My entries will all be 25 mm figures based for IMPETUS rules. I am planning to submit figures that have been sitting around awaiting painting and are additions to current armies - adding in extra options. There will be three themes- project Goth, project Italian Wars and  project Samurai.

The first entry is nine Goth archers based as skirmishers and a command base - one foot and mounted commander (65points). The figures are Wargames Foundry, I think from a Dacian range. OK, I technically know the Goths should ideally have shorter hair styles and clean shaven (according to Osprey).

I don't technically need the Command Base according to the rules but I always like playing with one to highlight the General's position and always fun to paint up. The watch tower is card from an old Warhammer card set - built ages ago and just used as a backdrop. In one picture I have added another skirmish base to show what they look like if I decide to field them as larger T - shooter type units. Here in IMPETUS the flexibilty is that I can just field two S skirmish units to make a larger single shooter unit.

Welcome to the challenge, Jez!
I too enjoy the small little tedious erratica in building and painting a force. I've been making army specific objectives and terrain since before it became a thing. It just makes sense to give the troops home ground and clear objectives!
I know little on Goths except they aren't Visagoths! ;) I do appreciate irregular troops and enjoy those troop types the most. These fellows have excellent animation to them and I'm sure they'll fight harder with the commander looking on. I hope you can provide some closeups as that commander and bodyguard do seem a very good pair up, Id also like to see better the cloth and fur caps the archers are sporting better too!
