From SanderS: "I am Gregarius Part III!" (20 points)

 Hoi,

As I have been promissing for a while now, I finally got round painting something 30K related! 40K has been a game I have played very avidly in the past, but what with all the changes in rules have kinda lost track off it. I am not actively playing 40K at the moment, but I still love the Lore and figures so while not fighting on the tabletop, I do actively collect and paint several armies. A few years ago I also got enamoured by the new Horus Heresy (or 30K) miniature line and started collecting a force for  the First Legion, my beloved Dark Angels.

For two Challenges now Greg has been showing us his gorgeous 30K Son's of Horus troops and last year it triggered me to put most of my kits and troops together, but they have been lacking a paintjob. This year I was sure I was going to get a headstart with the painting but hey the hobby-butterfly came calling and I ended up painted a lot of other miniatures than 30K.

So as to not loose too much face in the 30K model and please the Lord Primarch Gregarius; I hereby present my first painted 30K Dark Angel Land Raider!

Now the observant watcher will have noticed that I made a big boo-boo: I left all the moving parts free/ separate so they can indeed move, but in doing so I mixed one of the sponsons up with one from my Kratos Tank so now this Land Raider features one Sponson that's not supposed to be on there. I will fix this for sure sometime soon.

Whether I will be able to get more 30K stuff done this Challenge remains to be seen, but I do not think so. Pointswise 1 vehicle in 28mm is 20 points.

Cheers Sander

Hi Sander

Hobby butterfly is not a bad thing … I think we all enjoying seeing our challenge-mates bop from one project to another 😊

Nice looking 30k vehicle and I like that you’ve chosen to leave the moveable parts move-able. Leave the extra part in the Land Raider … perhaps it will make the vehicle extra fast?

From SanderS: The last post! (190 points)

 Hoi,

Dear Challengers, if you do not fancy a sentimental post please skip this one, because it will get emotional.  This will be my last post this Challenge which is mainly due to two reasons: firstly I have to pack up my man-cave in order for a building crew to get going with our home renovation and secondly because my painting juices have drained after my Dad passed away. Last Saturday we laid him to rest and  while he was sick, Dad passed quite suddenly and even though I thought I would be able to keep painting as a distraction from it all, I find myself really tired and not able to find my mojo. Most figures shown here were already mostly finished and I only had to put the last strokes of the brush to them.

Let's start with some 25mm Old School DnD figures.

My friend Martijn (main sponsor of miniatures and main beneficiary of this post) will get these to give away at the DnD sessions he's hosting at his shop to players who have no figures. These figures I obtained in a big lot from ebay that contained a lot of old fantasy figures amongst which were a lot of old metal GW figures.

Specially for Greg, I have converted and painted one of my Horus Heresy Dark Angel Praetors, I am really happy with how he turned out. This is basically the Praetor with the double-handed weapon from the Age of Darkness boxed set which I gave a Terranic Greatsword and a pistol as well as a hooded head to tie in more with the Dark Angel esthetics. For the same reason I gave him a Scribor resin shoulderpad featuring a lion, making him a Calibanite Dark Angel.

After these rather random figures it's time for one last stop in my Studio tour, I had rather liked to stay in a bit longer and visit more halls but it isn't to be. So I will visit the World Cinema with Stalingrad! This battle has been put on the big screen several times but the one I like best is the 1993 version.

These WW2 Russians from Warlord's Stalingrad set, are also for Martijn . I have painted them up as demo army for the store and these are the last of the Russians. A few Germans still remain undercoated till after the renovation.

There's also a Panzer IV in the big box and I have painted it up to go along these chaps, you'll notice that it is lacking markings, this is mainly because I didn't have any but also because Martijn and myself still have to decide what unit the vehicle will belong to.

With this last post I am well shy of my 1000 points target, but that would always have been a problem this year due to the renovation. So I am happy with what I have finished this season and will strive to come back with a vengeance next year. As to the calculation of the points I calculate the following:

3 DnD figures 15 points

1 Praetor (4 skullz by the way) 5 points

22 Russians 110 points

1 vehicle 20 points

Studio bonus 20 points

Is 160 points total.

Next year I will surely do some sort of tribute post for my Dad, but I can't do it just now it's a bit too fresh and I want to take my time to come up with something fitting and not hurry it. Have a good last few weeks everyone!

Cheers Sander

It's a shame we won't get to see more from you this year, Sander, but we all understand the reason. Your arithmetic was slightly off - the total comes to 170 points, and as the D&D figures are a gift for Martijn I'm going to give you the Gift Shop bonus points for them, so that's 190 points total for this post.

From SanderS: Dark Angel Bladeguards (15 points)

 Hoi,

In Highschool I learned of WH40K and got inspired to play Dark Angels by their background and the cool imagery. Mainly the artwork of Asmodai shown below.

Anywayas far as I am concerned they will remain my go to 40k army and I have now also started to collect and paint the 30K equivalent. Now I have never been much of a Primaris marine fan, mainly because to me the Primaris marines exemplify everything that was wrong with GW at that time. Upon the release of the Indomitus set the Blade Guard were introduced and they are a big hitting unit in the new game as well as extremly "Death Wing"in appearance and style. While I have been able to keep most of my Primaris figures limited to the Red Scorpion Chapter I am also building on the side, I always knew I needed a Blade Guard unit for my Dark Angels.

Now countng points for this trio is easy: 15 points, counting Skullz however is a different story. The hooded guy has 11 skullz (including the one on the base), the middle guy has 10 (also including the skull on the base) and the guy on the right has 9 skullz (again with the one on the base) so a grand total of 30 skullz.

Cheers Sander

Nice work, as always, Sander!

From SanderS: First Post is away! (10 points)

 Hoi There,

Happy New Year Everyone! While you have all been very busy with filling the Challenge with absolutely awesome posts, my hobbytime has been very sparse. I finally managed to finish two of my favourite 40K characters (and the very first named characters I ever bought for the game back in 1996) Interrogator Chaplain Asmodai and Master Librarian Ezekiel. These chaps have seen two earlier repaints but I think I will be sticking with these paintjobs.

 Asmodai:

Ezekiel:

Before anyone asks: I consider the Dark Angels to be firmly loyal. Yes they have their own agenda and often work seemingly against the wider Imperium, but so does the Inquisition and nobody expects the Imperial Inquisition (see what I did there?) to explain themselves so why would the first Legion have to?

These will net me 10 points in the lists and make sure I am not wiped from the roster.

Cheers Sander

A great entry to get you on the board, Sander!

From SanderS: Terrible Terminators (110 points)

 Hoi,

Yeah it's been a while since I have posted but I have not been dragging my brushes. Although work and family have been a drain on hobbu time I have managed to paint up 22 Dark Angel Space Marines Terminators. Some of these have been awaiting paint for over 10 years and finally they're done (-ish). As the title of this post states: they're terrible, I really should be stripping the paint and re-do them but I just cannot bring myself to do this. They were clogging my workspacefor so long that I just pushed on and rushed it, just to get rid of them off my desk. Now when taking the pictures I noticed, I have spoiled some rust and blue colours on the feet of some of them and I will touch that up soon.

There's several combat squads in the lot of which almost all possible generations are represented. Without further ado here are the figures and good riddance too I say!

There's also two old white metal characters in this bunch and I like them best, there's my own Chaplain in Terminator armour, usually that's all black armour with a bone white helmet but I switched this because I thought it would fit in better with the white Deathwing armour. The blue guy is a Librarian (ergo a space marine magic user) and he's the latest addition to the force as I recently bought him off evilbay for near to nothing.

Pointswise these chaps should net me 110 points. Cheers Sander
