Medieval Archers by JohnSe (

I've had some plastic 5th edition Brettonian archers knocking around my lead pile for 20 years, but didn't have a reason to get them onto the table until I started playing Lion Rampant. I've been working on English army circa 1250-1315 and they desperately needed a missile contingent, but the monopose Brettonians didn't quite match the more dynamic modern Firefroge figures that made up my the bulk of my army.

Doing some research over the Summer I found that Front Rank's figures seemed to be the best match to Games Workshops old sculpting style, and had a variety of poses and equipment that would help break up the ranks of identical plastic Brettonians. I've had these figures primed and ready to go since then, just waiting for the Painting Challenge!

My English army uses a variety of red and yellow liveries for the knights and all of the troops they would have mustered. I don't believe soldiers would be fielding identical uniforms, as each was responsible for providing their own gear, so I'm depicting a rag tag look to these units, with some figures sporting more formal livery, while others making do with something vaguely red or yellow colored from their own meager clothing collection.

To help identify the units on the table I've grouped together figures into a red unit, a yellow unit and a neutral unit. Some of these figures are individually based so I can always mix the colors up if necessary, but in the end these are game pieces we need to keep track of on the table.

Red Unit

Yellow Unit

Neutral Earth Tones Unit

Three 16 man units give me 48 figures, which should give me a total of 240 points.

MilesR: great looking Archers and yet another points bomb on a Monday!

Handmade Persian Napoleonic Infantry and other stuff - MartinC

Today I completed my 1st ever Napoleonic units. They were amazingly Persians for the Russian Persian way of 1807-1813. Whilst you can buy the figures from Westfalia and Irregular miniatures I decided to make my own.

This is the target uniform

I made a body out of an old zombie body and added some milliput to give baggy trousers and straps

Cast 20 of them - I had 220g of swarf collected

Added a Mahdist head and ACW arms and musket from Perry Plastics

Modeled the tall woolly hat

Painted them up with a standard bearer and an Old Glory Persian officer'

Really very pleased  with them. I purchased some Old Glory camel gunners. These come with matchlocks so I replaced the matchlocks with 1/2lb culverins for 3 of the 6. I also changed the hats

Camel gunners
These mixed with irregular Afghans will give a pretty good Persian army

I've had a few figures lying around that I've been painting up with left over paint

Hasslefree Boudi figures. These are great sculpts

Sub-Roman Brits from Crusader

British Zulu war figs with mealie bag and bucket

Copplestone Detective

Northstar Greek

Slave market

Overall 34 foot and 6 mtd figures (230pts) plus what ever bonus is awarded for casting my own figures my lovely minion deems fit to award

MilesR: Hand cast? Hand casted figure - oh good lord that takes the cake.  I stand in utter amazement at your industriousness.  As for bonus points, I'll need to confer with the snow lord but have awarded 10 points as a placeholder for sheer audacity.  You get the the homemade points bomb award this year!

From DaveD - Sudan - Indian Army battallion (320 points)

This weeks submission is the final unit I needed for the Indian army brigade that was was involved in the Sudan. The unit is the 17th Bengal Infantry the Loyal Poorbeah. Its made up from Perry metal figures and has them with covered turbans. It is 60 figures in close order, two seperate officers and a mounted officer. Nice simple khaki colour scheme.

The entire brigade consists of the 17th and 28th Bengal and 15th Sikhs supported by the Queens Own Madras Sappers and Miners.

The Brigade advances in square to counter any fuzzy wuzzies!

This takes me to my original challenge target. I  have one more Sudan unit ready and prepped to complete yet,  and the continuation of the micro tanks.  I don't think i will complete much more than that this year - around 3000 points overall.  The man cave will be shortly going out of commission while work takes place on a new , improved and larger one . Mind I have been having a stock up at the York wargames show this weekend as I did not have any camels left in the pile....there are now camels and a host of other goodies too..

MilesR: BOOOMMM and the clearing smoke has a hint of curry....  Yet another Giant points bomb from DaveD - at this point I think he has more painted Miniatures than troops that fought in the Sudan.  It really is rather impressive.  Nicely Done, Sir!

Variety Bagbag 2.(Clint B) 6th Fede (150 points)

As you May be aware Not all posts were published last Monday. So instead of editing last weeks post in the hope it will be published here is a second post of things painted this week and due to go on Monday. (Fingers Crossed)

Rogue Stars Cultists.

Firstly here are 6 "Cultists" for the Sci Fi Game " Rogue stars".  They are all 28mm EMP Games. Link ) "Battle Brothers" Originally designed to be Sci Fi Monks a quick colour change and they become "Rogue Stars" Cultists. And 6 should be more than enough to  act as a crew. The one in all Purple is a cult leader, but only a minor leader at this stage and the one in the cream robes is to be a novice. New to the order and yet to prove tem selves. A Veteran in rogue Stars and a Green in that order. I will detail them further on my blog and maybe have the Sisterhood with them.

. I did start them all in red but as they did look like Santa I had to swap to Purple! As to preferred Psionic abilities at present I am not sure, "Mind Control" does sound like the obvious one but given how hard it is to action a number of easier ones might be preferable at the start. Although I do know some players would try for the harder ones to action first and hope to luck. But for me I think some like "Push" might be better as it can move an enemy (or one assumes even a friend) possibly out of the line of fire or into the line of fire. So may be very useful for retrieving wounded and unconscious allies....

WW1 British Cavalry.

Next up are 12 28mm Great war Miniatures British Cavalry.

My Grandfather joined the army at the age of 14 (when the war broke out) and served in the great war (Not as a front line troop you needed to be 17 years and older to fight in the trenches! Instead his job was to take mules of supplies up to the trenches. Therefore he was under artillery fire much of the night as a trench without supplies does not function for long! And supplies were carried to the trenches under cover of darkness.). In 1919 one month after being demobbed he joined the 4th Hussars a cavalry unit based in Palestine. There he learnt to read and write and to properly ride horses. He won a few trophies for horse jumping. How many and of what calibre I do not know. This love of horses has continued in our family and last weekend (30th January) my sister qualified for Hickstead this year.

Back to the figures I have painted these for Matt and to be honest they were a right pain! But seeing them finished I am quite pleased with them. If nothing else they have been a pleasant break from 10mm Zulus (yes still finishing some off). Among the 12 troopers are a Musician Carrying 2 types of bugle) and an officer armed with a pistol and not a lance! They are both in the front rank but there is no need to look for  them. Trust me they are there!

Colour wise I have had to match another painter so they did take me slightly longer than planned as I needed to get the correct Vallejo paint to match. But all in all they are finished to my satisfaction and with luck I will not need to do any more for a while.

Which makes me wonder what will I be painting next!! Actually I do already know a very few more Zulus and the Terrain bonus round.

So until next week take care, have fun and paint like crazy!

Thank you Miles. But your comment and your scheduling make these two posts to  appear to be the same week. Kindly acknowledge they were sent on different weeks and that your busy work trip delayed YOU in submitting them.  The dates were clearly in the titles which you have since deleted. You as a minion are within your right to change things and I am equally within my rights to point this action out to You Curt and the other AHPC readers.
Wishing you Well Clint.

MilesR: Another great submission form Clint - I really like the Great War Car - very evocative!

A variety bag (ClintB) From 30th Jan.

Well it is a mixed bag today due to Miles work commitments. So starting small here are:

6mm Sci Fi Light "Trucks"

A total of 7 light trucks. Last time I showed any 6mm sci fi I concentrated on heavy trucks. Not everything needs to go on large heavy trucks though. (Although I do know some people who disagree and always think the bigger the better!) So there are 3 closed body light hover trucks. As with most of this project I am staying with Brigade models and these count as German hover trucks (as  do all the rest today). As I will not be using Germans for either force they do make very suitable light trucks.

Then 3 Light "Pick-up" trucks. Most notable for the open backs which could carry many things and as long as it is not perishable or vulnerable to the hostile climate it really could be anything.

The final truck is an anti aircraft (space craft) truck. There were 14 trucks in the pack so one AA vehicle for each force seems appropriate. I dare say many players will choose to fire it as direct fire against ground targets as well.

As with all this Chinese Democratic Socialist Union force I have painted in a block camouflage pattern and placed them on "Snow" bases to best suit my frozen planet.

15mm WW2 Horch 1A light Truck!

Just a simple 15mm Battlefront German WW2 troop/crew carrier. The driver (I apologise for the poor picture quality) is dressed in late war Oak leaf spring camouflage. While the vehicle would have been painted by the crew to fit local conditions.
This vehicle will be used for PBI the Peter Pig game and came in a little mixed bag from eBay. I was only after the 2 Pak 40's and crew and this was included. The Anti tank guns will probably be done next week or the week after. So in effect this vehicle was free. Not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth I undercoated it and painted it as quickly as possible. It will fit in with the rest of the force no problem but will seldom make the tabletop as in PBI once set up Guns hardly ever need transport. Still it is nice to have.

25mm Sci Fi

Finally I have also painted 2 Kra Vak by GZG. They have been sitting in the lead pile a few years and one day I just felt like it so I started painting them.  Being GZG they are 25mm and not 28mm. They are also quite cheap if you need any aliens at £1.50 each. I did start painting these after seeing a vid on U Tube about Rouge Stars. And yes I even sent for the rules and they are due tomorrow. But I am currently thinking of a different force which if we are all lucky will be started BEFORE the painting challenge ends.

Anyway I settled on Green (camouflaged) clothing with pouches in a lighter green and black weapons and hair. Being Aliens I could have gone for anything and still felt I ha chosen the correct colours. However the green and the black did go (in my opinion) with the purple skin tone. Mostly when I see these figures painted by others I see either green or Tan leather skin perhaps because their hair is similar to that in the film Predator. But I went Purple as I thought it looked right on the figure but being aliens any colour you choose has to be the correct colour (and /or Pattern).

Well that is my meagre offerings for this week. With luck some WW1 Cavalry next week. All the best Clint

Dear Miles Please Include the date in the title as leaving it out when it was sent in time makes me look bad and I have not complained at all but by doing so you have left me with  nothing to put on my blog. If you choose to change the title kindly let me know perhaps with an explanation of the reason. . I realise that last week you were busy with work and do not in any way blame you for leaving my post out and not sending me a private email to inform me of this action of yours when you returned from the business trip . I have carried out your wish to group all submissions for the week to make. I am not asking for an apology I know and understand you were busy. But I feel it needs to be acknowledged that this submission was sent and received (Along with a couple of others) in time for you to post but that real life may have gotten in the way.Kind Regards Clint

MilesR: Nice little submission - it will net you a tidy 32 points:

14 for the 7, 6mm vehicles
8 for the Torch and Driver
10 fro the 2 28mm vehicles

My apologies for missing you last week but I was in a location that had very poor internet and couldn't edit the blog.

From TamsinP - 15mm SYW Russian Horse Grenadiers (74 points)

It seems that I missed the early deadline for last Monday, so this will be the first of two entries this week.

Kargopolskiy (green flag) and Rizhskiy (yellow flag)

As I said, just the one small (for me) entry this week -* This entry comprises the final two regiments of Russian horse grenadiers that fought in the Seven Years War.

*edited after posting because I discovered I hadn't changed it

These are the Kargopolskiy and Rizhskiy regiments. The former took part in all of Russia's main battles of the SYW, the latter only took the field at Gross-Jagersdorf but did participate in other parts of the war effort.

I'm sure that someone will point out that Gross-Jagersdorf was in 1757, three years before the horse grenadiers dropped their mitres in favour of tricornes. Yes, well, if Essex did horse grenadiers, things would have been so much simpler for me, but they don't so you'll just have to suffer the anachromism.

Some close up pics:

As always, the flags are hand-painted in an impressionist style. Figures are 15mm from Essex Miniatures.

For scoring, there are eighteen 15mm mounted which gives me 72 points and I'm trusting that our mathemagical minion Miles will award the customary 1 point each for the hand-painted flags.

MilesR: Your trust is well placed for there is indeed another point for each flag - really nice looking minis

From LeeH - Greek Cavalry (45 point)

As promised last week I have some more cavalry for my 6mm Pyrrhic army. This time I have painted two units of Greek Cavalry and one unit of Greek Light Cavalry.

These are actually the same models painted slightly differently. For the regular cavalry I have gone for purple tunics and bronze helms. These guys carry short spears or javelins and will provide a firm flank to my army. The Light Cavalry underwent a slight conversion to give them soft caps rather than helmets. I filed the helmets flat, removing the crest, and painted them grey to look like Macedonian Kausia hats (similar to modern Afghan Pakol's).

These will be the last cavalry for the moment...I have some more elephants waiting in the wings and my next bonus round entry. These have been started and I'm working hard to finish them early because I'm going away for a few days next week. I'm well on track to hit my target ahead of schedule and the 45 points I'll get from these get me another step closer.

MilesR: Sorry I missed these last week but they really are worth waiting for - superbly done!

From RayR Donnybrook - Pioneers (100 points)

For this entry you'll all be surprised that I've gone all Donnybrook again??
Never?
I've been beavering away getting some Pioneers or Sappers or just plain workmen painted up.
The first 6 figures plus equipment are not Nine Years War figures (Shock Horror!)
They are infact a lovely ECW set from Bicorne Miniatures, that'll cost you only £8
to buy unpainted. I've painted them up in a variety of colours, so they could be for
either side in my Donnybrook skirmish games.

The second set of 10 figures are from Reiver Castings, they are painted up with the green
troos and stocking for Kirke's regt. But once again could be used for any side during the war.
They could even be added to a Civilian Mob, or added to other troops to make a Rebel unit for Sedgemoor.

Lastly, are 3 figures and some equipment from Dixon Miniatures.
The Engineer from a previous entry is also included in this pack.

And here they all are in a group shot.
19 figures, 2 wheelbarrows, 2 barrels, piles of wood and a discarded coat.......
Not sure how many points this time, I'll leave that up to Miles??

MilesR: Nice little group here Mr Ray, all working away for the betterment of the villages.  I really like the 'extras' so will toss in another 5 points bringing you to a cool 100 pointer fro this submission

Well done Ray!

Monday - Just Another Points Barrage

That's right - it's Monday and I'm back from the Turks but about to head out to the UK.  This work thing has got to go!

Big Monday is back with over nine action filled posts that are just brimming with painting gold.

That's right kids, you better dig those foxholes another foot deeper cause we just aint got one or two points bombs - we're coming at you with the big guns - there are more than 6 100+ points bombs on tap for today.

Your ears surely will be ringing when this Monday Barrage of Pigments comes to a close.

Can I back up this hyperbole - oh yeah, 'cause we got:

- SYW Russian Infantry and Calvary Hordes

- Indians in the Sudan

- Donnybrooke Laboreres

- Teeny tiny bad ass horsemen

- Archers, lots of archers

- Sci FI stuff

- Handcast Miniatures that will scare the Perry's back to warm embrace of GW Employment

- A rather highly evolved Frog

and more, so much more

Perhaps the only way to really describe Monday in an accurate and sober assessment is to cry out "BOOM, BABY, BOOM!"

Oh how sad it must be to be another day of the week - when you know you've got to follow up after the Monday show.

In fact, I think it will be safe to say that you all will be THUNDERSTRUCK!!!!!

Ok, I know I used this clip last year, but it still seemed appropriate.
