From ByronM: More Greeks and Mechanicum (140 points)

Hello everyone, I am once again back with more entries to two out of three of my big projects this winter, Greeks and 30k Mechanicum.  I had planned some 30k Death Guard for this week but fell behind a bit, but am madly trying to finish them off today, so I may yet get them in later tonight...
First up this week though are 4 more Castellax Battle-Automata, these ones armed with the much more basic mauler bolt cannon.
Even though the gun is more basic than the others that I have done, it is still an upgraded version of a heavy bolter that is capable of cutting space marines down without a save.  The model also is pretty damn cool with a huge belt feed going to the gun which looks awesome!  The issue with it is the belt feed looks like it holds about 3x more rounds than the ammo box does that is mounted to their backside.... sigh.  Regardless of that, I still love the look of feel of these giant robots of death!
This brings my Mechanicum force to 8 Castellax completed already, and at roughly 100 points each that's already almost 1/2 an army done!  Expect more to come soon.
Next up this week is another unit of 16 Greek hoplites.  Once again these are the very poor Warlord (Immortal) figures, but I have been forcing myself to work through the pile of these before going onto the better Victrix and Foundry figures that have been arriving from various orders, as I don't think I could force myself to come back to these things after working on better figures.
This batch I painted up in white and blue in various patterns and am picturing them as an Athenian unit.  I realize that most units would be more mixed with colours and styles historically, but am choosing to simplify at least a few units so that they look like units and are easy to keep straight on the battle field.  I know, not very historical, but I play more for the look and tactics than any real historical recreation reason, I don't have a burning need or desire to be 100% accurate.

I respect those that make sure it's all accurate, but despise those that berate people that take it to the level of "That shade of green was not used until 1941 and your figures represent men from 1939 and therefore I won't play with you", which there is a lot of around my area, and one of the reasons I never wanted to play historical for the longest time (Until I met and started playing with Curt, Greg, Dallas and a few others in the area).  As long as you don't do something like paint your Panzers pink, I could care less.
OK, rant mode over and back on topic...  While the unit may not be perfectly accurate, I think they look good as a unit and will make it simple for people to tell them apart from other units where every figure essentially has the same pose. Once again, these were done to a very basic wargame / tabletop level with only colours blocked in, a wash, and a highlight.  On the table they look pretty solid and I am happy with them, when I pick them up and look closely, I kinda cringe, but again I have too many units of them to get done to take much more time than this on them.

Back to work now, and hopefully I will talk to you all again late tonight with another last minute submission this week.  If not, I hope everyone has a great week and keep those brushes flying until next week, I am loving all the great submissions everyone is putting in!  They are keeping me hugely motivated this year trying to keep up with some of you other amazing artists.

Fabulous Byron and once again thank you for reminding me that not everyone is having a beer when I am.  Cracking work Sir and I just love your work, the painting is brilliant and I love the full armour vibe that is going through your posts.

  1. I'm tempted to paint a Panzer pink just to see what happens (though I know my granddaughters would find them irresistible)!

Don't be so hard on yourself, Byron, nothing to cringe at there, me lad! Great work as always!

    1. Thanks Evan, yeah it's not a real cringe, it's just an expression. It's that ongoing battle with yourself (that every painter that I have ever talked to has) over painting to the highest level you can versus painting to the level that gets the job done for something. We can't all paint our best for everything or we never get things done, but I think most of us wish we could paint our best every time and feel bad when we don't, even when we have a reason not to (at least I do).

All to say, they are not badly done, I just feel bad that I am choosing to not do them as well as I can, because I would get 2-3 units done the whole challenge instead of the 10+ I want to get done!

  2. Not even if it's a Panzer 5? I thought "everybody loves a panther that is pink"? ;)

Nice work as always Byron :)

    1. Sounds like the gauntlet has been dropped for a purty pink panzer to be done. ;)

  3. Nice work Byron. I gave no idea what 40k stuff is, so can't quibble on rivet counts etc, but they look nice - like the coppery red.

I've been gaming Hoplite Greeks for 35 years so can comment on these, and they look damn find to me. You may have speed painted them to gaming standard in your terms, but I wish I could get results like that. I still say someone with your talent should paint the shield designs but I know most people find the stickers easier. The uniform effect may not be strictly historical, but ho cares it looks great and the unit screams 5th century Greek Hoplites.

Rivet counting doesn't really work with Ancients. Historians can't figure out if Alexander's foot companions fought as pike phalanxes or loose formations with spears, or what colours Roman legions wore. Go back earlier to chariot ears and it gets comical. Historians can't agree on if the battles took place or not, what nations were involved or even what century was involved!

Do what works for you and tell anyone who doesn't like it to p*ss off

  5. I think you and I have different criteria for table ready, Byron. Those Athenian troops are very nice. Maybe not as colorful as a "historical" unit, but it's nice to have a unified look that ties them to an area.
And since you cringe looking at them, I think my troops ought to have a good time trouncing yours as the mere sight of their warpaint will wreck your cringe to a squint of sheer pain! ;)
The bots are pretty cool too! ;)

    1. LOL, yeah I am sure Curt will yell at me yet again for me saying "tabletop" about my stuff. But YES 100% my tabletop quality is different than yours, or Curts, or anyone else on here. I always view everyone as having a tabletop, character, and show quality paint level that they do. My tabletop level is my fastest quickest level, it may be higher or lower compared to others. It is however significantly less than I am capable of. Every painter I have ever talked to does the same, some figs get a quick paint job, some get a better one, some get TONS of love, but their levels have nothing to do with my levels or your levels. I would never put down anyone's painting, as I look at mine compared to something like this (https://tinyurl.com/y7rgzrx8) and my painting is complete shit compared to something like that!

  6. Great work Byron!

The Mechanicum stuff looks brilliant. Again, I love the energy blooms and the ammo feeds (though I am totally on-board with the whole 'ammunition issue' in 40K). I also really like your Athenians and look forward to your work painting figures that you're more engaged with. Once you have a few more units done you have to bring these guys out to Regina for a Hoplite game. Stacy (or 'Anastasios'), our resident Greek, would love it.

  7. I love the way you’re doing distant past and far future!

I saw someone with a force of five Panthers at a FoW tournament once. One was pink, one was Ultramarines, one was Hello Kitty, one had legs... some people were quite distressed, but I thought it was great!

  8. The Reds look great on your 30k stuff Byron, nice work all around.

  9. Hi, as a Railway modeller i can tell you that the more you dig into historical "accuracy" the more variation you will find-there are so many variations in batch colours of the same Paints and they all look different in different light that it is impossible to be "accurate" unless you are dealing with a particular item at a particular location at an exact time of day and date-this applies to things that exist even in the modern day so anyone who thinks they can critique the equipment on ancients is deluded- what scant records we have on such details are far from guaranteed to be accurate.
Enjoy your hobby and don't be put off by others, the most critical people are usually the ones who have done nothing themselves.

  10. Great looking red robots and I think the hopolites are splendid! I'm happy painting within myself to get units done, I know if I did my best on each one I'd never have an army, good enough is my mantra and your's are more than good enough, I think there is a pink panzer in Rutland weekend television (an offshoot of month python )which has got to be 50 years old so there is historical precedent! Having said that I think it was a sdkfz half track!
    Best Iain

  11. Nice work Byron! I actually do envy you a little for your tabletop standard. I simply can’t bring myself to not painting each and every figure to my highest standards, meaning I never get anything done in a reasonable time.
I for one wouldn’t mind owning a few armys in your so called ‚tabletop standard‘.

  12. Ah Byron and his "tabletop standard" - always entertaining!

Great work Byron - those Mechanicum machines are SO cool, just excellent.

    1. Thanks Greg. At this point I just have to say it to tilt Curt :-)

The Mechanicum should have enough done in another week or two to throw down as some allies in a game, just need to get the HQ done at least.
