From Curt: Challenge Cut / Voting Closing Soon / Big Milestone

The Ten Thousand

Hi All!

Here we are, almost a month into the Challenge and we've already seen so many fabulous submissions from people all over the globe. It always amazes me what this great community of hobbyists can do. It's such a pleasure to be a part of it.

______________________________________

Don't be part of the cut...

While we on the topic of time, we are fast approaching the dreaded 'Challenge Cut'. For those who have not yet submitted an entry, you have until 11:59pm next Wednesday (CST) to get in a submission. Of course we'd prefer you submit on your regular Minion Day, but we will allow 'free fire' on Wednesday to get you in before the deadline. So, wet your brushes, open that paint pot, and show us what you got - we don't call it a challenge for nothing!

________________________________________

Also, just as a reminder, the voting for our first theme 'Empire' closes on Sunday at noon (CST). So if you've not yet done so already, please check out the gallery of amazing theme entries and cast your vote for your favourites!

________________________________________

Finally, I was just checking under the hood on the blog and realized that we have just past 10,000 submissions. This includes Challenges V through to today. 10K entries. Astonishing. Truly a milestone for the event for which I am very proud. Bravo to everyone who has been a part of this over the past 12 years!

Now, let's get back to our brushes as we still have a little over two months still ahead of us.

Have a great weekend!

- Curt

From MattW: Judge Dredd Hurley Block & Planet of the Apes (105 points)

Hurley Block

Vestal Virgins

My first Perp gang for my Judge Dredd collection are the Vestal Virgins for the Liz Hurley block in sector 10. The Vestal Virgins are named after Liz Hurley‘s Punk Rock band, I have elected to paint them in bright red clothing, with white highlights, white boots, armour and pink hair. The figures are a mix of Warlord Games Resin Judge Dredd range and Mongoose Publishing Block Wars figures with green stuff added Mohawks and some sculpted body armour.

Citi-Def

A Citi Defence unit for Hurley Block using a mix Mongoose plastics with a bit of green stuff and a future soldier for the leader. I elected to use a simple brown and cream palette, really happy with the result, basing is simple grey to match my asphalt table top roads.

Para 3 Bots

I picked these up off eBay about 5 weeks ago to add to my Dredd collection, they are circa 1978 and I had a few in the mid 80s which I used in Rouge trader games, God knows were they ever got too. The figs originally were West End Games for the Paranoia Game I think, then citadel purchased the rights to produce the figure while in Newark. Citadel released the figures as Para 3 Bots. They come with separate tops and bottoms so you can mix and match to suit roles and were random in the box of 3.

2 Fast food bots on wheel base, for my yet to be named Nachos and cheese restaurant (ideas anyone)

A Dental Bot and Maid bot

A heavy lifter and security bot

Planet of the Apes

I picked up these chimps from a bring and buy stall at Partizan this year in a 1£ bucket, they have a very Socialist/communist vibe about them, the chimp with the hammer also had a sickle but I removed that and intend to add a flag at some stage. I elected to paint them in worker blue clothing. They will join my Ape collection.

 Major Tom

I also picked up this spaceman in the same box and opted for a orange suit for him, really happy with my colour selection. He will join my generic space figures.

Total 28mm Figures  @ 5 points = 21 Figures

Total points 105 points

Squirrel 3 points (Dredd, Planet of the Apes, Spaceman)

Robots = 30

Cheers
Matt

From Millsy:

This is a very cool collection Matt. The vibrant colours are spectacular! The Vestial Virgins have a definite Necromunda vibe going on and the Citi-Def are reminiscent of early 40K Cadians too. Nice work and 105 points added to your total.

Cheers,
Millsy

From StuartL - (Un)Death and Taxes - 99 Points

Hi all,

I almost didn't get a post in this week. Work has started again after a long break and I have had plenty of non-hobby related things to do. Luckily, I was able to get something finished and uploaded just in time. (I hope...)

So, on to the topic of today's post. There are many things I like about fantasy wargames, particularly GW's Old World/Warhammer Fantasy Battles. I like the models, even some of the older ones have a certain charm about them. I like the narratives that unfold as an Orc horde invades some peasant village, or an Elven expedition encounters wandering bands of chaos worshippers. I like the variety of armies and uniforms, the bright colours or grim-dark gothic-ness. In fact, the only thing I don't really like are the rules. Having looked at dozens of different systems and tried a fair number out, there has been nothing that really grabbed me. WFB/TOW is just a skirmish game with strict movement rules. Dragon Rampant is really generic. Kings of War looks great, but I can wander off to get a coffee when it isn't my turn. Hail Caesar counts one unit as being largely the same as any other. I want something that has the character and variety of WFB, the aesthetics of KoW and the ease of play of HC. On top of all that, I want something that keeps me actively involved in the game as much as possible. Sadly I haven't found anything that quite fits my target yet. However, I am usually happy slapping my own rules together based on the parts I like from other systems, so at some point I will need to do that. In the meantime, I put together a test unit of models.

This is a unit of 17 Grave Guard from WFB, though the central command figure is a 3D print from Monstrous Encounters on MyMiniFactory. They are all based together on a 12cm x 12cm square of plasticard. I went for a dark blue theme for the unit, rather than the more traditional red or black often seen on undead. The armour is GW Leadbelcher with some bronze trim here and there. Everything was then given a wash of Vallejo Brown Wash to make them look dirty, rusted and old.

As I said, I like the aesthetics of multibased models. Individually based figures are fine for a skirmish game, having a unit move and fight as one on the tabletop just looks better. You can decorate the bases, position the models more dynamically, and most importantly, by the middle of the game you aren't left with three guys wandering around with a flag and a trumpet between them. I chose plasticard for the base as it is relatively cheap where I am and readily available. The area I live in is pretty humid and I have found that MDF sometimes develops mildew patches, and real plastic bases require quite a large order to be viable with international shipping. With plasticard, I can cut the bases to the size I want easily.

Like I said, this is a test base. The figures are glued down with superglue, so if I don't like it, I can pop it in the freezer, flex the base and most of them should pop off easily. By using a large-ish base, I can keep the models away from the edges (for less breakage), and have plenty of space to arrange them. I figured that the undead probably wouldn't form neat lines, so they are all jostling for position here. The only downside is that it needs a lot of tufts to cover the base. The basing material is from Tamiya and it comes out of the pot in this simple brown. Looking at it, I may need to add a wash or a highlight as it seems quite flat.

Hoping to make it into Barks' highlight reel for the next Skull Update with this one....

The banner was hand-painted. I wanted something simple, but effective. The old banners I saw in White Dwarf growing up often featured very simple motifs, so I went for a simple fanged skull and a couple of swords. Easy to do and looks okay to me. It also adds an extra skull, because why not. These chaps are all skulls, with some on their shields, pauldrons, sword guards and helmets, for a grand total of 65 between them. Plus they add one to my Squirrel score as well.

For the second part of my post, I don't have any gaming models to show off, but these are figures that I painted.

My local dollar (100 yen to be accurate) store frequently has little ceramic ornaments for sale. My wife found these two rabbit musicians and decided A) to purchase them and B) ask me to paint them for her. Each is about 40mm high, but they were really simple to do. A quick base coat, wash and highlight later and they were ready for a coat of gloss varnish. By painting these two decorations, I could get a free pass for spending a lot of the holiday in my hobby room, brush in hand.

So, for the scores, I have 17x 28mm minis, plus the two rabbits, which were pretty straightforward, so maybe should also count as 28's rather than 40mm's? That should net me 95 points, pending minion approval.

    My ongoing duels information:
Skulls - 206 (+65)
BSRoD - 16 (+11)
Squirrels - 10 (+1) - D&D Animals, 30K Militia, Plague Clowns, Afghans, Robots, Anglo-Saxons, Medieval Polish, Clan Smoke Jaguar, 81st West Africans, Undead

From Millsy:

Grave guard are some of my favourite Warhammer Fantasy models of all time.
I have these same ones in my collection Stuart and absolutely love them. The 3D printed command fits in perfectly and even I wouldn't have known he was a ringer had you not mentioned it. Lovely work all round!

Despite the fact the rabbits were straightforward to paint you've done a lovely job and I'm sure the Mrs is well pleased with her commission. The problem you have now is you've set a precedent!

99 points for your total mate. Nice one.

Cheers,
Millsy

From Kerry T - "Oh what a knight" - 120 points

Morning afternoon & evening all

I've had a busy week but thankfully my habit of painting horses in large numbers over the Christmas break has paid dividends. With the bulk of the horseflesh already completed it's been relatively easy to finish 12 riders this week.

For the second week in a row, these are from Reconquer Designs and depict another Spanish Military order, the Knights of Calatrava. This order was one of four in Spain that fought in the Reconquista.

Founded in Castille in the 12th Century by Raymond of Fitero and confirmed by a papal bull issued by Pope Alexander in 1164 the order still exists today. Wikipedia says "Today, the aim of the Spanish Orders is basically the same as they had when founded: the defense of the Catholic faith. The sword has been put aside, but their doctrine, example, self-sanctification, and divine worship remain active, aside from their cultural and social activities."

These are 3D printed figures, from the stable of Reconquer designs who produce 3 sets of military order knights giving quite a bit of variation in figures. What is also handy is that one is able to print from a selection of shield options thus making painting them easier as the relevant cross is printed on the shield. Options include shields for the orders of Calatrava, Santiago and Templar with plain shields also being an option.

No way are they getting through that gate like that

Painting white is always a struggle but this time I managed to stop myself giving them my usual black wash after blocking in the white tabards. I've undercoated black, dry brushed white then painted with Vallejo cream white and then a mix of off white and cream white for highlight.

They've ridden past that door so many times you'd have thought one would have found the way in by now

I think that I'm probably done with Spain and the Reconquista for the rest of the challenge and will move on to something else, probably 100 Years war. All a bit strange really as I regard myself as a dyed in the wool Napoleonic enthusiast!

Just to prove these are not last week's Knights in disguise

In summary

12 x 28mm military order knights @ 10 points = 120 points

Many thanks

Best wishes
Valleyboy

From Millsy:

What a great looking crop of soldiers of God mate! Nice to see some of the less well known orders like the Knights of Calatrava getting a look in. I think you've done a cracking job on the white and as always your steeds are wonderful.

120 points riding bravely onto your total sir!

Cheers,
Millsy

From StephenS: The Mighty Thor (7 points)

G'day,

In between working on the next themed round, I have been chipping away on a few other projects. This week it is another Marvel: Crisis Protocol character - The Mighty Thor.

Thor Odinson made his debut in the Marvel Universe in 1962 (the original Thor debut a little earlier than that, with the Roman historian Tacitus describing a Germanic god similar to the God of Thunder we all love) and received his very own comic in 1966. He has of course, been popularised by fellow Aussie, Chris Hemsworth, in a number of films from 2011 onwards.

The 1966 debut cover

This figure is a 40mm and plastic from Atomic Mass Games. I had put off painting him for a while, because for some reason black is one of the colours I struggle with the most, but I was happy with the way the new combination of blacks and greys turned out this time.

All up, a thunderous 7 points please.

Cheers,
Steve

From Millsy:

There's nothing like quietly chipping away at small stuff while working on the big ticket items. I'm doing the very same right now. Hemsy would approve mate. Nice work!

From SteveG: More ancients (165 points)

1. Antiochus III The Great. 28mm. Basileus of Seleucid Empire. Solidified his crumbling empire in campaigns from Bactria o Thrace. He sadly, came up against the growing might of Rome and came off 2nd best at Magnesia in190 BC. He even employed Hannibal Barca after his exile from Carthage but failed to utilize his military genius to the full. If he’d been willing and able to do so ancient history may have a vastly different flavour. Model from Aventine w head swap from Victrix Heavy Greek Cavalry set. Relic Miniatures also make a nice looking version of this character.

1. Boii Gallic Spearmen. 28mm 3D printed by Battlecat Miniatures. Unlike most companies that make generic “Gauls” , Battlecat have elected to make a series of specific tribal national groups. The Boii caught my eye as they are clad in linothorax armour, which is rarely associated with Gauls. Being from northern Italy they were likely more heavily influenced by Etruscan and Italic cultures than their Transalpine gallic relatives. Nice figures, each of which is unique. Only detractions are the fact that each figure is fully formed, which makes painting some parts hard to access ie behind their large shields. These shields are all identical and don’t lend themselves to the use of transfers. Also the facial features are a little soft and the helmets have only a few variants. I’ve therefore swapped about ½ of them for heads by Victrix, Wargames Atlantic and Warlord Games. Boiorox ( king of Boii) is a Victix fugure. His banner bearer is modified and the flag is based on the Boii icon from the excellent computer game mod Europa Barbororum II.

2. Chariot by Warlord Games ( I think). It's been knocking around my cupboard for a decade. Finally painted up and it looks pretty good.

1. Illyrians by Gripping Beast. 28mm metal “ old school” figures. Light on detail, not very interesting poses and odd proportions such as huge heads. All in all mediocre minis that I’d not recommend. Despite this I enjoyed getting them painted up. Resin Warfare will bring out some superior 3D printed 28mm Illyrians in 2026.

From Millsy:

Oh wow! This is even better than your first entry Steve. So much to like about this from the banner to the shields to the clothing. You've packed in so much detail I'm wondering how you managed it all in just a week mate.

If I was forced to pick a favourite it would be the Gallic command stand. Absolutely smashing. I think this may well prove to be one of my favourite entries of the whole Challenge from my charges.

Well done indeed. 140 points seems like a paltry return. I'm awarding another 10 just for effort and going the extra mile literally everywhere including the basing. You also miscounted the foot (didn't include the chariot crew) so that bring you to 165 all up. Brilliant!

Cheers,
Millsy
