Kicking off my adventure through this year's contest is a project that I started 2 contests ago! Having gotten a fair bit done on the other commanders forces, we had still Lord Croft's forces to complete/start/work on.
Only poor Croft was completed, and his men were all in a primed state for the past 2 years here.
Thankfully this year I have a lot more time for painting and less work distractions going on. And hopefully not moving as that has happened 2 or 3 times in the past contests for me here..
Big change for me in painting as of late though is the addition of contrast paints. They have been an absolute game changer for me in painting RnF models, and these were no different.
The first unit I did try to match the original colors with just normal paint... but then saw that the Talassar Blue Contrast paint by GW was almost the right color when thinned down some. And the other 3 units flew by in getting done.
Same with the bases being coated in a sepia wash over a zenithal prime sped things up.
So getting this all done for my War of the Roses army was quite easy. And seeing as Never Mind the Billhooks has their new rules out (never did play the first edition sadly) I am hoping to get a few locally interested in it. So the goal is to get a few mid sized forces that can be used to playtest the game out some.
Here's hoping it works some and garners a bit of interest.
I am still researching banners and the like for the forces. I had purchased some years ago for this project, but damned if I can remember when I put them! That, and I remember them being a right pain to attach, so will be looking to see what other options might exist or can be made to go on easier.
Points wise;
52 28mm models - 260pts
Under Construction Category - 20 pts
Total - 280 pts
Having gotten these done now, just another batch of the same for another commander, before getting to the fun units like crossbowmen, cavalry, and artillery!

First, welcome back to the Challenge, Kyle!
With these WotR archers and billmen you give us an amazing paint bomb here. I agree, Contrast paints seem just made for knocking out rank and file troops, especially those with lost of texture and definition. I'm a bit jealous, as I've been wanting to come to grips with doing a WotR force, having the raw models in about 3 scales. Nonetheless, the livery and banners make me stutter step a bit, but I should just get stuck in and give it a go. Anyway, your efforts here look brilliant and provides you a wonderful basis to build upon.
Great job! Booom!
- Curt
Such a good looking bomb, Kyle! Very vivid colors.
ReplyDeleteThanks. The contrast paints really come through in a heavy saturated color and really help to pop more. Was fun to paint them up for sure! Now to find an appropriate green contrast paint for the next batch! :D
DeleteThese are great Kyle. You've really hit the ground running haven't you?
ReplyDeleteWas lucky to have some quieter work days leading up to the holidays here. Hoping that I can keep the momentum going for next week also and get a fair bit going before work interferes come January ;)
DeleteFantastic bomb to startyour challenge. Not used contrast paints, only just worked out normal paints
ReplyDeleteThanks Martin. I can safely say, once you start with them, and give them a proper go, they really do change the painting game some. High pigment, relatively good flow, and amazing coverage.
DeleteBetter late than never, as the say go... and what a start to the Challenge
ReplyDeleteThank you. And yeah better late than never indeed.. got a few more such projects to go with it..
DeleteI have always been a fan of sky blue and white livery, and these chaps certainly look the business. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThis was the one I was looking forward to the most.. just not sure as to why it took me so long to get on with!
DeleteA points bomb so early in the Challenge? My word, Kyle!
ReplyDeleteSpiffing work on these retinues! :)
Many thanks Tamsin.. and I was glad to have the time and energy to push through this batch so quickly and early!
DeleteThank you for the comments Curt. I think it's going to be an interesting year of bits and bobs being painted. And this being but the spearhead of that assault on my grey pile of shame!
ReplyDeleteLovely looking figures! Billhooks has captured my interest as well.
ReplyDeleteI really want to give it a go.. and am liking the fact that the models are relatively easy to paint up!
DeleteAmazing! Some very good-looking figures and what a way to start your Challenge! They definitely look the part!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Makes me feel good to get a large group out of the way to begin with here! A good momentum starter!
DeleteClucking Bell - what day are we on? I think you get to drop the mike or something after posting this substantial unit so early. Great work and nice use of contrasts when you feel the need for speed.
ReplyDeleteHa! Not quite a drop mic moment I think.. and yeah, contrast for speed is great!
DeleteGreat work on the bright livery colours, they are very eye-catching.
ReplyDeleteThanks.. my favorite colors to paint up here.. so always fun and quick to paint up when I get the chance!
Deletegreat work Kyle!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sander!
DeleteGreat painting and colour combo - love that you have finished these in the "under construction" category - nice to get finished?
ReplyDeleteCheers Jez T
It feels good to get a bit more on that project done for sure. Though still got another batch of this many models, plus all the mercs to go through. but will be spreading that out inbetween all the other projects I have on the docket.

ReplyDeleteThanks Peter!
DeleteBrilliant and with a colour combination that is worth stealing errr I mean copying!
ReplyDeleteI think its a great scheme, and well worth repeating elsewhere ;)
