So with no further ado, here is the start of my 30K Killteam! I've decided to do up a group reflecting A 'Shattered Legion' force - an ad hoc conglomerate of survivors who emerged from the 'Drop Site Massacre' on Istvaan V. Essentially, they are composed of the remnants of three legions: the Raven Guard, Iron Hands and the Salamanders.
A Killteam is typically made up of 8-10 figures which I think is quite manageable. This first group is made up of three Raven Guard with jump packs. One is a close combat specialist with dual power blades, another has a groovy silenced bolter and the last one has a pair of arcane Dark Age of Technology pistols (which probably leak enough passive radiation to poison a good-sized city). I envision that the completed force will mostly be Raven Guard with maybe an Iron Hand and Salamander popped-in for variety.
I was surfing the net to get ideas for painting and found a YouTube channel that features GrimDark paint styles. I really liked this gritty approach and thought it fit nicely with this group of isolated survivors who've been conducting hit-and-run raids, and not having been resupplied for months. So, lots of chipping, muddy washes, AK Grime and Streaking Rust.

I had a load of fun with these, but each one took a good chunk of time to do. I think the process will speed up right after I'm finished. :)
These three fellas from the Grim Dark Future will give me 15 points and the start of a new squirrel entry AND a couple of skulls. Woo Hoo!

Dude, this is FANTASTIC! I am so pleased to see you doing some 28mm 30k figures at last, as I knew they would look amazing - and they do!
These prints are tremendous designs, and they totally match with your vision for some determined survivors of the drop site "incident" (this is how I see Horus-approved media referring to that event). The guy with the dual pistols will make a perfect "Moritat", while the chap with the sniper-bolter combo looks straight out of the "Mor Deythan" units. The fellow with the blade drawn...he looks reader for revenge. And more revenge. And a bit more after that...
I can't wait to see a Salamander wielding a dangerous number of flamethrowers, and an Iron Hand sitting there and pouting because his loser Primarch was beheaded LOL. God the Iron Hands suck.
You'll have to let me know what base style and size you have used, as I am determined to assemble a counter-kill-team of Horus' followers, committed to hope and, er, "positive change" for the galaxy!
I am awarding 10 extra point just because I love this so much.
Greg

Lovely painting and basing and backstory!
ReplyDeleteThanks Barks!
DeleteGlad you like them, Greg. They were a lot of fun to work on. I used 7/16 flat washers which are coincidentally 32mm across, same as what GW uses. I like them as they give the figures some heft.
ReplyDeleteThose are stunning models - and great paint jobs too Curt!
ReplyDeleteI love Kill Team - its a great scale game for time in both playing and painting. RG are a different chapter and would be fun to play.
Hmmm....Maybe I need a new Kill Team too....
You absolutely do, Paul. :)
DeleteGreat looking what ever these things are Curt. Love the gritty style and also the A/C units on their shoulders.
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter. In the Grim Dark of the 30th Millennium it's all about staying cool...
DeleteReally nice looking Ravens, well done. I have used some of RGANDALL's bits and they really are great, if only he'd do more than one legion.
ReplyDeleteThank Stuart! Yes, he is VERY focused on Raven Guard. I have one Salamander that he's done, so I'm hoping this is a sign that he's diversifying a bit.
DeleteFantastic entry, massive fan of 30k and these fit perfectly into the setting. I always find stealth fellas in massive powered armour amusing mind you, you’d think those suits would emit the odd bit of noise even under normal operating conditions :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Jamie. Yeah, the stealth thing is a bit tenuous when you're wearing the equivalent of a Volkswagen in powered armour.
DeleteLovely work Curt, I really like those bases!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bill. I recycle bits of 3d supports (and failed prints!) and use them debris.
DeleteVery Nice Work
ReplyDeleteThank you Adam!
DeleteJust brilliant stuff as usual Curt, I know nothing of the lore or the figures but will no doubt spend ages looking at the link you provided - well done
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kerry! Yes, it's a bit geeky and esoteric, but probably no more than our interest in Napoleonics and 17th century warfare. :)
DeleteLiking those Curt, really great
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt, they were fun to do.
DeleteLovely work Curt, I enjoyed reading the Horus Heresy novels, and you have really captured the mood of the settting.
ReplyDeleteThanks Steve! Greg, Jamie and I were big into the novels as well. You may think differently, but I found a lot of the books in the series to be a little hit and miss, but the good ones were terrific.
DeleteSuperbly done. Not played, yet enjoy the books immensely.
ReplyDeleteThanks Bruce! Yeah, the series on audiobook gave me MANY hours of happy painting. :)
DeleteAmazing stuff! A fully black set of power armour, and you pulled it off. I'm taking notes.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yes, black can be tricky for sure.
DeleteDamn fine painting, Curt!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ray!
DeleteThose are some fantastic Ravenguard, Curt! they look excellent with your brushwork and now i need to find these models and the 30k version of killteam!
ReplyDeleteLet me know if you need a link to the 30K Killteam doc, Dave.
DeleteExcellent work on these hardened Marines, Curt. I like the alternative models/poses a lot.
ReplyDeleteThanks Dave! Yes, they're great models which provides me good impetus to getting them done (not the fastest with the brush...).
DeleteLovely mate, and very clever carrying their own hair driers with them 😉
ReplyDeleteIndeed! It's all about looking good and accessorizing.
DeleteQuite a banger my friend! You playing around with streaking grime and other arcane substances certainly has paid off
ReplyDeleteCheers Nick. It's been a bit of a learning curve, but quite fun.
DeleteI don't care much about WH40K, but these figures look amazing Curt. Very grimdark, and very subtle painting. Nice!
ReplyDeleteThank you Martijn (esp. with the setting not being your cuppa tea). :)
