The Participant Roster for Challenge IX

We have our participant roster for this year's Challenge!

Yes, I admit I was a little indulgent by extending the cut-off by a few hours to allow some additional people to join in. I know, a slip on my behalf. I will endeavour to return to character by canceling a civic holiday, taking a bath in the tears of orphans and by mixing the recycling into the trash bin.

Next: Paint Duels!

  2. All right I'm ready to go... almost LOL

  3. NOOOOOO!!!!! You said 80 and that's what the spreadsheet is built for. Now I'm going to have to sacrifice 3 kittens to the dark painting gods and hope that they allow the spreadsheet to increase by three. These rituals are never to be undertaken on a whim as the chance of mistakes are very high.

You choose the live dangerously, Snow Lord, very dangerously.

    1. 83 is a very odd number, in fact it is a prime number. They are very, very risky. You should be very careful with them, extra kittens might be necessary.

    2. Just to let you all know, this was nothing to do with me???

    3. Sorry Miles, it's actually 84 now as I just did an update... Hehe.

    5. I can not be responsible for what happens next - Curt your reckless quest for glory may have doomed us all........

    6. Miles.. just blame Ray.., it’s bound to be something he left behind..

    7. 84? I don't think kittens will be enough of a sacrifice - you might have to resort to otter cubs to fix this one ;)

  4. Just stopping by to introduce myself, I haven't received an official confirmation yet, but I'm going to assume that's me up there at 77. (If it's not, humble apologies to the real StuartL ;) ).
I'm here for the challenge for the first time and still not entirely sure what madness I have signed up for. I'm thinking that 500 points seems daunting and there are a lot of people with much higher targets than that.
Any hints from the veterans out there? Is there any way to make it through the challenge with your sanity intact?

I'm looking forward to painting with all of you.

    1. Hi Stuart. Yes, this serves as official confirmation that you have been slaved to this paint-galley for the next three months. Get your gear ready as I'm breaking out the lash and drum.

Seriously, the best way to approach the Challenge is to think of it as a marathon. Break up your 500 points over the 12 weeks and fix your sights on getting something done each week. And remember that the Bonus Rounds are an easy way of grabbing 250 points over the length of the Challenge. But most of all have fun, comment on others' work and enjoy the ride.

    2. Hi Curt,

Ok. Thanks for the pointers, I'll do my best to keep up on my painting and post on what others are doing.

    3. The best way to explain what the Challenge will do to you is to watch this Stuart...

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjA92f_iCHQ

And by way of advice? Try to think of it as Peter O'Toole would. Certainly it hurts. The trick, Stuart, is not minding that it hurts...

    4. As Curt said, 250 points can be "easily" collected from Bonus rounds. It is actually 275, if you paint one 25mm for each round. That leaves just 225 points for the rest of the Challenge for you. For each 12 weeks that's just a bit less than 20 points, which would equal to 4 28mm miniatures. That sounds rather easy and actually is, if you can commit to paint a bit there and bit here, something for each week.

Some people have high targets (which some of them will bypass with a large margin), but they are experienced, they have time, they might not paint Golden Demon level every time, they use magic (and airbrush or paint filled flamethrowers) and generally are just crazy.

I started couple of years ago (fifth challenge?) with 500 point target. 500 points seemed daunting at that time, but with the help of bonus rounds and finishing something each week, I managed to score more than that. And it doesn't matter how much, or how well, others paint, the most important thing is that you paint something at your pace, your level and stay sane. The Challenge is a motivator. Welcome!

    5. have a project(s) to focus on preferably projects that realy engage you. That seems like the best way to get the most out of th challenge, in my experience

    6. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm starting to plan out my painting schedule and get stuff lined up ready to go. It should be fun.

    9. Welcome Stuart, our new victim...errrm...Challenger. Simply accept that you will not retain your sanity. Just look at Miles. Before he started his first Challenge, he was a mild-mannered businessman. Now he is a megalomaniacal mathemagician, sacrificing kittens to assuage the gods of the spreadsheet.

      You have been warned!

    10. Just looking around, I can't seem to find the exit, only a padded room with my name scribbled on the door...

    11. Stuart, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Don't worry about the high scores concentrate on yours, find a space and let the paint flow. Have fun and remember "this is all done in the best possible taste"

      Cheers, Ross

  7. Is it a coincidence that the participant numbers are twice the answer to life, the universe and everything else?!?!?! I don’t know about you, but I don’t believe in coincidences....

  8. 84 seems appropriate actually...
"The numerology number 84 is a social number. It supports and encourages the creative expression of others. And it tends to raise the optimism of people it associates with. The energy the number 84 represents tends to be materially oriented."

    ReplyDelete
  9. 84 was also my number in my football years when I'd smash through linemen looking for the ball carrier to crunch... ;)

  10. Always a good time had here!
Will be focusing on different pieces throughout this challenge a few commissions as always.. so should be cool to see how it all plays out in the end!
    Best of luck to everyone!
