Flying High
Off to the high challenge. I started work on those chaps a fortnight ago and thought I would get them in last weeks challenge but failed to get the decals on (could not find them, then the drying time for gloss varnish….. weather mumble, mumble) anyway I present to you Rabens Ravens from Jasta 18.
The aircraft are a mix of 1/72 plastic kits, Revell, Airfix and Roden, the pilots are a mix of Wartime Miniatures metals and plastic. They are brush painted as I feel it represents the painted fabric better. I had the the molds and sculpting commissioned because I wanted pilots and Wartime Miniatures range could have ww1/SCW/RCW/ early ww2 pilots! The decals are from Pheon models.
Ltn August Raben, October 1918
Ltn Hienz Küstner June 1918
Ltn Hans Schultz, June 1918
Hanover CII
Points
5 x 1/72 aircraft @ 15 points 75 points
6 x pilots @ 1/72 12 points
Total. 87 points
Cheers
Matt
After much delay, this post has finally arrived in "ready" form for me to do the minion stuff to. Those planes look superb. Just one small thing - you forgot to claim points for the crew figures; I count 6 of them, so at half points that's an extra 12 points for you.

Lovely job Matt .. Dakka Dakka!
ReplyDeleteIndeed, lots of vrooming and dakka
DeleteI remember trying to make these when younger and never managed to get the wings right. These. are great well done impressed

Tri-planes are sooo cool!
ReplyDeleteLovely painting 😎
Yes a huge fan, lots on my blog
DeleteOh wow, these are just fabulous, Matt. I was just thinking I'd like to do one of these in 1:48 for my Mad Maximillian collection (just as a cool bit of terrain). This is very inspiring.
ReplyDeleteNot much available in 1/48th, although some great stuff with paper models if you want
Delete...and diecast (cringe)...
DeleteYes, but possibly more sensible
DeleteThey do look great, Matt! I hadn't realized that the planes had such an uniformed look so early on.
ReplyDeleteHence the flying circus name I think as early as 1916 Jasta 6 had green on the aircraft painted the aircraft
DeleteExcellent squadron, the paint work is top notch
ReplyDeleteThanks the decals are still glossy but a Matt varnish will sort that out once it gets warmer
DeleteOh man, that's so cool!
ReplyDeleteCheers Millsy, a big fan of Jasta 18 I have them in both the red and blue and the red and white
DeleteThose look great
ReplyDeleteCheers
DeleteWhat a gorgeous paintjob Matt!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sander
DeleteThat's a great circus!
ReplyDeleteCheers Barks
DeleteThose planes are wonderfully well done, Matt! Plans for some allied French SC to challenge the sky with them?
ReplyDeleteYes I have a follow up build coming of Sopwith triplanes and some French spades for the Americans (which jasta 18 mauled badly)
DeleteWonderful work, love the red. Also really like the connection to your wife’s family.
ReplyDeleteYes we have a photo of him next to his plane, Frederich left Germany after the war and came to Australia, his cousin went on to become the more famous Hess family member.
DeleteRudy had some aerial adventures too IIRC.
DeleteVery nice. Who doesn’t like bi-and tri- planes. Well done on these wonderful models.
ReplyDeleteCheers Bruce
DeleteNicely done Matt. I do find the WW1 planes look so charming, fun and civilized (such a contrast to the ferocity, intensity and losses of the actual fighting, I know) - these biplanes just seem like a "nice way to travel"...
ReplyDeleteKnights of the air, in our minds I think, all those biggles books had my brother and cousins rigging up play aircraft around the car graveyard on the farm. It also encouraged me to get my pilots licence, and I did think about purchasing a kite at one stage….
DeleteAwesome looking WW1 planes, lovely finish!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Cheers Iain
DeleteGreat Work!
ReplyDeleteThank you Adam
DeleteLovely looking WWI Aircraft
ReplyDeleteCheers thank you
DeleteA great looking Jasta, Matt. I love the red and white squadron colour scheme. They are ready for a remake of 'Dawn Patrol' from 1938, but from the German POV.
ReplyDeleteYes, a stop film would work maybe
DeleteSome great flying death traps here, nice work!
ReplyDeleteTomC
Cheers Tom
DeleteWonderful planes, Matt, I really like the colour scheme!
ReplyDeleteYes I love it, the previous commander had Blue and Red for the Jasta 18, they are already completed
DeleteBrilliant plane Matt.
ReplyDeleteCheers Ray, they were enjoyable. I now need to paint some Allies
