From MattW: Flying High (87 points)

 Flying High

Off to the high challenge. I started work on those chaps a fortnight ago and thought I would get them in last weeks challenge but failed to get the decals on (could not find them, then the drying time for gloss varnish….. weather  mumble, mumble) anyway I present to you Rabens Ravens from Jasta 18.

The aircraft are a mix of 1/72 plastic kits, Revell, Airfix and Roden, the pilots are a mix of Wartime Miniatures metals and plastic. They are brush painted as I feel it represents the painted fabric better. I had the the molds and sculpting commissioned because I wanted pilots and Wartime Miniatures range could have ww1/SCW/RCW/ early ww2 pilots! The decals are from Pheon models.

Ltn August Raben, October 1918

Ltn Hienz Küstner  June 1918

Ltn Frederick Hess (my wife's great great grandfather)

Ltn Hans Schultz, June 1918

Hanover CII

Points

5 x 1/72 aircraft @ 15 points                     75 points
6 x pilots @ 1/72                                        12 points

Total.                                                            87 points

Cheers
Matt

After much delay, this post has finally arrived in "ready" form for me to do the minion stuff to. Those planes look superb. Just one small thing - you forgot to claim points for the crew figures; I count 6 of them, so at half points that's an extra 12 points for you.

  4. Oh wow, these are just fabulous, Matt. I was just thinking I'd like to do one of these in 1:48 for my Mad Maximillian collection (just as a cool bit of terrain). This is very inspiring.

  5. They do look great, Matt! I hadn't realized that the planes had such an uniformed look so early on.

    1. Hence the flying circus name I think as early as 1916 Jasta 6 had green on the aircraft painted the aircraft

    1. Yes I have a follow up build coming of Sopwith triplanes and some French spades for the Americans (which jasta 18 mauled badly)

    1. Yes we have a photo of him next to his plane, Frederich left Germany after the war and came to Australia, his cousin went on to become the more famous Hess family member.

  11. Very nice. Who doesn’t like bi-and tri- planes. Well done on these wonderful models.

  12. Nicely done Matt. I do find the WW1 planes look so charming, fun and civilized (such a contrast to the ferocity, intensity and losses of the actual fighting, I know) - these biplanes just seem like a "nice way to travel"...

    1. Knights of the air, in our minds I think, all those biggles books had my brother and cousins rigging up play aircraft around the car graveyard on the farm. It also encouraged me to get my pilots licence, and I did think about purchasing a kite at one stage….

  14. A great looking Jasta, Matt. I love the red and white squadron colour scheme. They are ready for a remake of 'Dawn Patrol' from 1938, but from the German POV.
