'There will be Paint before Breakfast' - Painting Duels and Side Challenges for the Fifth AHPC

'La!'
A fun element that has grown from the Challenge is the 'painting duels' and side wagers taken up between participants. These 'duels' run the gambit from seeing who can reach a defined points goal first, to being able to paint the most figures within a particular period or genre. They are great fun to watch unfold over the three months and provide a great source of goading and cheering for all concerned.

Here are the first set of duels to kick off this year's Challenge:
- First, I'm calling out Sidney to see which of us will reach our 750 point target first - winner will claim a painted figure from the other. I aced Sid last year so I ask: Will I be hard-pressed this time out or will I get another limited edition Roundwood for my display cabinet?  ;P
- The Dutch Contingent (Jacco, Michael and Rob) have challenged one another to see which one of them will meet their 500 point target first.
- Anne and Sander have challenged each other to painting the best Femme Fatale. The parameters of the duel are still being hammered-out but I hear murmurs that this clash will come off sometime in January.
- Anne keeps busy with another duel, this one with Simon. They have challenged one another to see who can paint the most points in Pulp adventure figures over the three months of the event. The winner will get a painted figure from the vanquished.
- I also have something in the works with Alan and Phil, but more on that once we've hammered out the details on the matches.
To the other participants, I challenge you all to comment below and issue your own call-outs for duels and cage-matches. Let's make this year's Challeng a paint-lashed scrum to the first day of Spring!

  1. Cheers Curt, certainly I'd like anyone planning on painting Pulp adventure minis to consider themselves 'clocked around the chops with a glove' for Anne's terrific challenge idea. Yourself included :-) Certainly the winner will be sent a "Reaper" mini from me, as I've already bought it in readiness.

    1. The winner will be getting a Counterblast figure from me. There's NO WAY I can win this one!

    2. I think I may wade in on this one as well. Like Anne, I've really been bitten by the whole Pulp genre this past year (so many good books and movies that spark the muse).

    3. Please go easy on me then Curt... I am a newbie after all :-)

  2. I would lay out a Sudan challenge, but my much-worn mound of Perry would never stand up to the DaveD juggernaut! ;-)

    1. Ok Phil, how about something related to a civil war? I know you're wanting to do some SCW - care to race to 100 points? Winner gets a painted 28mm figure of his choice?

      Delete
    2. That would be very nice, to see both of you painting wonderful SCW figures!

      Delete
    3. Curt - you're on, 100 points of SCW, as I'm just starting I suggest a clause of infantry only.

      Best,
      Phil

    4. Sure, but I'd like to broaden it to 'civil war' in general as I have a project in the wings. Okay with you? If not, I can still crash on with SCW. Let me know.

  3. I will answer the call for a challenge

An open challenge to any naval modelers competing in this years challenge - The first to get to 350 points from naval models wins. In the interests of sportsmanship and fair play I shall extend the definition of naval to include space ships. Since ships don't fall easily within the scoring parameters all participants must agree to submit to Curt's often arbitrary and sometimes tyrannical rules awarding without question.

    Any takers?

    1. Sorry Miles not from me I only have about 100 points to paint in spaceships and they are scheduled for the last month of the challenge. (Yes I have a painting timeline with only limited flexibility!)

    2. I am a naval modeler and do have a considerable stock of miniatures to hand, but I'm wary of upsetting my OCD with taking too much on myself in the upcoming months.

To that end ... I would be willing to take up the challenge, but I can't see me reaching the 350 points, let alone win a race to get there first. But if I can offer friendly encouragement to people, with trying to keep pace and watching out for naval output, then count me in.

Will this side challenge just have the 'winner' crowned successor amongst the small group? There isn't to be a forfeit of a painted miniature is there, from the losers?

    3. lets set the goal for 250 - the prize is just the admiration of our peers and force Curt to say nice things about the winner - what better prize is there than that?

    4. Count me involved in this side challenge.
250 points of (historical maritime, in my case) navy, it is then.

      Delete
    5. I probably won't win, but I am in. It will inspire me to work on my 1/2400 WWI, Full Thrust and Silent Death ships.

      Delete
    6. Robert - I don't think that spaceships are included in this particular side challenge. However, I've set one up for spaceships with Clint if you want to join that

      Delete
    7. Yup they are, read Miles' first post where he (generously) broadens the field to include spacecraft - so you have a choice of duels!

      Delete
    8. Ah, it clearly pays to read. I'd missed that part.

Hmmm. Do I have 350 points of spaceships, and would I want them first up anyway?
      a) I don't think I do
      b) Nope - stick to my plan and do the 15mm SYW Russians first

    9. I've completely rethought my first "bonus" entry in light of this navalesque duel, and made the appropriate purchases.

      Delete
    10. I have a few Battlefleet Gothic ships that were to be done this winter. I can see how many I can complete this December!
      Count me in!

  4. I have to represent the honor of my tribe!
I'll count coup on the Anglos who can hide the most Native Americans in the forces they paint. Cuz just like this old scout, we are good at sneaking! ;)

    1. Ah, now that is an interesting one! If I wasn't up to my gills in duels I might take you up on that. Anyone else?

      Delete
    2. Gills!? Hmmm, perhaps a cryptic hint of more pulpy Deep-Ones on the horizon!?

    3. I guess natives in the woods are still scary! ;)

  5. Well, I reckon as Sander and I are the 1/72 brigade we should have a duel of some sort!

What do you think, Sander? First to hit 200 points of fantastic plastic wins? Will that be too much with your planned Femme Fatale duel?

    1. Well done kind sir! I'll take up your gauntlet, but knowing your rate of painting I am not in much doubt who will win!

  6. The 'Downunder Summertime side challenge race'. First Aussie or Kiwi to sweat it out and hit 500 points. Chaaaaaaarge!

  7. I did have a challenge worked out with Loki but unfortunately he's not participating this year. Shame but he needs to do what he needs to do and I for one wish him well in that.

But for now no challenges from me. This may change after Saturday when I meet the Rejects again though.

    1. "...no challenges from me." - Thank goodness, you paint at an uncanny speed that scares me to death. Glad I won't be watching you outpacing me over the next four months.

"This may change after Saturday..." - Nooooo!!!! :-)

    2. Clint - I think you mentioned you might be painting some spaceships. How many, and do you fancy a side challenge with me on that?

    3. Start warming up the zap guns. Enemy on the Starboard bow.

I am up for a SPACE Challenge. We shall have to set some rules though. I would suggest we both put up a civilian ship as a prize that is also painted during the Challenge

Not sure of exact Numbers but about 15-20 NSL ships Capital ships to frigates (so all sizes). I bought them from a friends 2 years ago and can't remember he exact compliment.

I will be at "Posties" on Saturday (not all day though) so we can sort details out face to face if that suits you.

      Delete
    4. Oh, bu.., errmm, rats - I'll have to add a civvy ship to the GZG order I'll be placing this week.

Sounds good to me - I've got an ESU "mega fleet" to paint up, about 20 ships plus I'll be ordering some carriers for my NAC, FSE and ESU.

      See you on Saturday.

    5. We don't have to have a Prize if you don't want. We can do it just for Bragging rights. Whatever you think best.

      Delete
    6. I'm cool with doing a civvy ship as part of the side challenge.

  8. MichaelA and me agreed to race for the bonus rounds. We both target to submit an entry to each and every of the rounds. Whoever fails to pass one or more of them is obligated to sent a painted miniature to the other.
In case that we both miss one or more bonus rounds we are both committed to clear the debt.

    1. Ah, yes! Sorry I slipped in posting your side challenge in the initial round. I definitely have it penned-in for the launch. It's great to have the both of you committed to the theme rounds - it should prove to be a great series!

  9. I don't have any side challenges so far, but would consider the following (for bragging rights; maybe for something painted to the winner):

    1) A race with AlanD to our 1500 point target (noting that I am planning to avoid the bonus rounds, so will be missing out on those extra points).

    2) Spaceships - I think Clint was planning to paint some up, but if anyone else is doing this then maybe whoever paints the most points of spaceships gets bragging rights as "Admiral of the Galaxy"?

  12. Calling me out, Sir? Well, then Sir, I shall call you out in return!

First to 750 points it is, Sir - and yes, let it be for the wager of a finely painted miniature. I treasure your pilot from last year (which was a gift, I think, not a winning wager - Lady Luck is notoriously elusive in her visits to Roundwood Towers). N'import - win or lose, it'll spur me on in this most wonderful of Challenges!

I shall commission my seconds for despatch to that most wintry of Canadian Wildernesses to deliver my cards in person!

    I am at your service....etc., etc. ...

  13. As I said before:

I challenge anyone on a 1000 target to beat me to it.
I also say that I will enter a piece for every fortnight theme and that I shall be the first to do so.

And since I forgot before… I challenge anyone from continental Europe (that is the EU minus the UK) to paint more points than me!

    1. Burkhard, the ground around your feet is a carpet of gauntlets! I quite like the 'first to 1K challenge'. I'd be mad to take that one on but I think there are a few 'heavy hitters' who might be tempted. Dave? Miles? Millsy?

    2. Not for me I'm afraid.

As I said over on the SD Painting Forum, "I'll have my hands full with the 'Naval Arms Race' sub-challenge".

  14. I challenge the good greek guy, StacyS to actually paint a mini something other than black! We've been waiting to see those SAGA Byzantine's for ages my friend. Not only will I beat you in points during this challenge, but I will be the first to reach (or more likely be closest) to the 300 point target we set. Given that you've recently basically retired, and that I'm going to be taking a masters course in January, you should trounce me....if it wasn't for your greek painting work ethic that is!

    1. Haha! Good one Jerimino! I agree it would be lovely to see a lick of paint on Stacy's Byzantine 'shadow warriors'. Of course he'll just tell us he's pacing himself according to the Julian Calendar...

  15. Gadzooks! I look away for a minute and you all go crazy! I think I can see a distinct red glow on the horizon from all the cheeks that have been slapped. While I have joked about a spider challenge, I possess nary an arachnid nor will I easily stay on target sans side challenge. I salute you brave souls and will thoroughly enjoy watching your endeavors.

  16. I would like to call out Juan, who seems to have avoided any challenges so far (nothing to do with us psi to g at a similar rate...).

We have the same 500 point target. I'll race you to 250.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Grrrr.
I was very quiet (and with a low profile) in my corner pondering about what I´m going to paint!!!
Of course, my friend; 250 points!!!

  18. Miles and I have agreed a new side challenge Curt, with a little twist. We are both already running spreadsheets charting what we need to achieve to reach our coincidentally matched 2,000 point targets. What all that says about us we'll leave others to decide!

Our side challenge is that whoever reaches the highest point total will receive a framed copy of the other's spreadsheet post-challenge. We'd appreciate if you would sign the said document prior to delivery in order to render it official and obviously add substantial value to it in the process...

    ReplyDelete

    1. HA! Brilliant! You guys are definitely touched with a little OCD I think. Speaking as an archivist, I think the winner should get both of your spreadsheets framed together, with corresponding photos of each of you at your hobby desks. It's all about provenance and context...

      Delete
    2. Well you are an archival professional so who are we to question your pronouncements. I hereby publicly accept the archival based challenge amendments.

Hmm, I wonder if I need to update my gantt chart and daily project plan? Oh crap I think I need professional help.....

    3. I had actually joked about a spreadsheet competition when Alan "Dux" talked about the spreadsheet gap.

I've tried to emulate Loki's from last year, as my jumbled list from last year was not so helpful. My spreadsheet also tends to be more of a suggestion than law.

    4. Side-challenge amendments duly noted and accepted.

PS. Since you've outed yourself Curt I shall admit to being qualified as a librarian myself. Come on Miles, what's your dirty little secret?
