Reaper Miniatures turns 25 years old this year, and to celebrate their silver anniversary, each month they are releasing a figure that is only available for sale for that month. This attractive (and large - standing close to 2" in height) Grim Reaper was their offering for the month of January.
I did things a little differently with him then I normally would - the robes were painted almost entirely with washes, building up a dingy, graveyard tone with layers of different browns, grays and black washes over a white base. Bones were picked out in layers of "Yellowed Bone" and "Creamy Ivory," and the top and bottom halves of the hourglass were done in "True Silver" and "Antique Gold," respectively, to try and create the illusion of an hourglass empty on top and full of sand on the bottom.
The base I let myself get a little silly with - the pooled residue of so many washes obscured a lot of the detail of stone and bones beneath the Reaper, so I gave it all a good drybrush of Yellowed Bone and then washed it with "Blood Red" for that heavy metal album cover look.
ByronM: Excellent work on a great figure! I missed picking that one up and it is a really great one. I especially like how you went with a muddy brown look on the cloak it reminds me of several old magazine / comic pictures that have a similar pose and colour scheme.
