Paint Duels and Side Challenges!

Macabre yes, but perversely funny...
The the issuing of side challenges, paint duels and grudge matches extends back to the first Challenge and has become a tradition ever since. The duels help motivate participants in keeping their steam up and create a fun atmosphere of smack talk and brush baiting.

For those who are new to this silliness let us explain: the paint duels allow small groups of participants to test one another against a variety of criteria. Maybe it's to see who can paint the most vehicles over the entire Challenge, or to paint figures within a particular historical period/genre, other duels may be to see who can get to a specific points threshold first. The sky's the limit - it's really up to your imagination.

Over the years the side duels have become more formalized, with many of these clashes of brush and paint become part of Challenge lore.

I've already noticed that a few participants have already started to issue duels, so I thought I'd dedicate an area of the blog to it so we keep track all in one spot. You can now find the link to the Duels page on the top navigation bar.

The indomitable Millsy will be in charge of keeping track of the paint duels this year. ALL updates on duels must be sent to him for tabulation and posting - This will be the official scorecard of the duels. No other flim flam spreadsheets, heretical documents or bogus scorecards will be recognized. So send him a note to get your duel registered and keep him appraised of any progress.

Millsy can be reached at:

challengesideduels@gmail.com

Again, when you finish an entry that's eligible for scoring in a duel please send Millsy a quick note, giving the name of the duel and the points you wish to add. He in turn will update the sheet. Simple!

Okay! Let's have some fun with this! I want to see gauntlets dropped and cards exchanged.

    2. as I have only set myself a 1000 point target as I ease back to things would be no use me challenging you on this.

    3. I'd race you to 1000 points on 1 condition. You can't paint any Mahdists until you reach 1000 points

    4. I think it will be a very interesting duel. I propose to call it: "dip-duel" :) :) :)

    2. If it was anyone else Sylvain... But i have seen you pull a thousand points out of no where too many times!

    3. Well Byron, that's why it's called a challenge... ;P

    4. That's right, a challenge, and NOT, and let me make this entirely clear, in any way a hustle.

    5. Whatever could you mean Mr. Hughes? ;) Could it be some sort of dark remark at my doctorate from the 'Tom Sawyer School of Motivation'? Hmm?

  3. Thanks Curt for both setting up the Duels page and also for laying down the law. Seems we're ready to rock. Cue the banjos...

  4. I am doing a few figures for the Sharpe's practice skirmish game anyone else working for this game system and want to join a Two Fat Lardies challenge?

    1. Someone is calling me? My main project will be Napoleonics for Sharp Practice together with reinforcements for Chain of Command. We can duel on the Napoleonics only or on both, you decide

    2. I will not know until Santa has been but I am provisionally doing a chain of command force in 20mm

    3. I have some figures to do for Sharpe Practice as well as some for WWI Mud and Blood and some Chain of Command forces. I may even get to a few for Dux Brit. A side challenge for one or more of these systems or TFL forces in general would encourage me to make progress.

    4. So, how would this side challenge work? Would figures for any of the Lardie rulesets count, or just specific rules (e.g. Sharp Practice)? I ask as they produce rules for almost every period so this could get quite broad.

Maybe there should be separate side challenges for both SP and a CoC?

      Delete
    5. I agree, separate for the specific rules and forces identified as figure groups per the rules may make it easier to administer.

      Delete
    6. Agree, separate challenges by sets of rules would be better

      Delete
    7. As I do not know what Santa will bring. It is perhaps best for me to step out and keep ita "Too Sharpe Lardies Challenge" with no CoC

    8. sound like we have enough people to get a Sharpes practice challenge going do I need to email Millsy?

    9. Yes, I'm in for the Sharp Practice challenge.

    3. I'd be happy to join the 6mm challenge as well. Have a few kilos of lead floating about screaming to get painted.

  9. ChristopherS, MartinN and I are having a Spanish Civil War side challenge. Basically, whoever paints up the most SCW figures AND has a playable Bolt Action force (min 1 officer, 10 ranks and a support weapon team) gets a painted 28mm foot figure from the others.

I'm not sure if vehicles will score - I'm petitioning Nick and Christopher on a ruling. :)

    1. Yes vehicles will indeed count and if I'm not mistaken Phil also wants to join in. The only stipulation is bonus points do not count towards the dual total.

Curt do you think buildings could be added to the challenge or would that be to difficult to bracket?

      Christopher

    2. Excellent news on both accounts and agreed on excluding bonus points.

I prefer to steer away from terrain (except for the one bonus round) as they are too difficult to score.

    3. i understand on the buildings and looking forward to the challenge.

    2. I might be doing only Epic 30K. I'm going to get destroyed ;-)

    3. I did the bulk of my 30k stuff last challenge so I don't have much left to do (relatively speaking...). I'm thinking about asking Battlefront to release lots of exciting things for Team Yankee during the challenge to sidetrack Greg again!

    4. I have no interest in WWII, so I approve of your cunning plan.

  13. Anybody up for a Renaissance challenge (15th - 16th C)? I'm working on some more figures for my 28mm Italian Wars collection and could use the extra incentive to face all that puff-and-slash.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well I'm not likely to do Italian Wars(notice the use of "likely" as I never know with me), but I very likely will be doing some ancients/medieval so if you want to do a spear and pike challenge then I'm in.

      Christopher

    2. I realise that the only figures I have primed are for the Great Italian wars so I am happy to join in a renaissance /ancients spear /pike challenge.

  14. Greetings, fellow Challengers, and August Observers of the Challenge!!

May I present my card, and offer a Duel involving any pre-20th Century 3(three)mm or smaller force/army (3mm (or smaller) figurines and figurine blocks to qualify). For my part, I offer as your Prize (should you be Successful) a most Worthy Baggage Train to fit with your Winning army.

I am assured by our worthy Snow-Lord that he will, in the fullness of time, work out how on the Lord's Earth to score the points for such a Remark'ble and Unique Duel.

Until then, Gentlefolk, my Seconds are at Your Convenience....

    1. Mister Roundwood. I will entertain your 'minuscule' impertinence by taking up your challenge.

Most points in 3mm or smaller? Done.

For Satisfaction I propose a sustained melee with 00 brushes (or smaller) starting December 20th and extending until Spring (or resigned submission).

For the honour of terrifically wee soldiers, prepare your lights and magnifier. ;)

  15. As a die hard fan of the Alternative Armies "Flintloque" and "Slaughterloo" games I issue a challenge for painting these figures. Anyone else a fan and want to test your metal?

  16. I did submit an email, but I should also drop the glove here.
    Again with the Natives!
Open to all. Use those stealth troops. Put a Woad colored Pict among a Roman cohort, hide a Ottawa warrior within the ranks of French Imperial guard. If you don't want to hide one in the ranks, get some models done up as Tecumseh or even Tommy Prince in his Devil Brigade days. When spring comes the one with the overall largest force of Native conscripts wins.
