Ahoy Wednesday Warriors! And I hope all the Aussies had a great Australia Day yesterday
While playing Mortal Gods at the pub last week with Alan and Slowpainter John (awesome) the topic of conversation turned to an interesting one I thought I would pose here, because the answers will be intriguing.
Scenario: If you were marooned on a desert island (with other wargamers, if you so choose), what THREE games would you want to have with you? There is only room for three in your sea chest, but you can take whatever minis/accessories you might need to play them.
I'll reveal our combined answers later; looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with!
The quest for the perfect ruleset eludes me... I'd want a generic warband skirmish ruleset 10 figures/side, a larger clash ruleset 100/ side, and a mass battle set. I could then use those rules for anything! Oh, and they'd all have a perfect campaign system as well.
ReplyDeleteIf you push me; Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes; Lord of the Rings; Commands & Colors.
NB- Brace yourselves for a Skull Bomb...
I'd rather have a load of minis, some dice, pencils and a stack of paper. Rules come and go, but good minis are always useful.
ReplyDeleteTo answer the question though, like Barks, I'd take a skirmish game, a platoon level game and a mass battle game. That should cover enough to keep me occupied until help arrived/I starved to death because I spent all my time playing games instead of focusing on survival.
My games of choice would probably be: Malifaux, Bolt Action and Black Powder. 40K 5th edition would be a close 2nd to BA I think. Honestly there are a load of good systems to play and I'd be happy with nearly anything.
What an excellent question...although I now have a mental picture of individual life jackets for the minis, after all lead is heavy!
ReplyDeleteAs the other commenters have mentioned I would want to have a large number of artist level painted minis (i.e. far above my own level), but as for rules sets, I am not a fan of individual man skirmish games. So I would pick the following:
I would pack DBA v.3 (provided I have every army variation in the mini collection). It is a very variable game that I find always gives an interesting and engaging game.
Something Napoleonic and granular, such as General de Brigade. There is a great solo blog (cannot remember the name, but he plays in 6mm) that shows the fun that can be had with big battle granular Napoleonic games when one has the time to play them.
As a third I guess something that is more modern, such as Modern Spearhead. This would need to be supported by a set of campaign rules though, otherwise I find players are all to happy to sacrifice thousands of men in one battle!:S
A thoughtful question, Commodore. Since I'll be marooned on a desert Island and, therefore, have limited access to hobby supplies, I'm going to go with board game / miniature hybrids
ReplyDelete- Command & Colors Ancients
- Wooden Ships & Iron Men
- Dungeon & Dragons 5e
I know the last one isn't technically a wargame game but has the advantage of being played mostly in the mind.
I am now thinking about how to make miniatures out of coconut husks - difficult, but not impossible...
Mine would be 1) Wiley Games' Fist Full of.. cos is so adaptable to any genre and the base rule set would allow me to take a small force from each of my armies, 2) Warhammer Fantasy Battles (3rd or 6th ed I can't decide between nostalgia, variety and play-ability), it covers many bases and won't be plagued by endless updates which I would miss out on whilst on the Island, 3) In Her Majesty's Name, cos It'so much fun and again very adaptable and you can crowbar a small force of many things into it.
ReplyDeleteI'm such a butterfly, sticking at three would be torture. I play the same period with many sets of rules, and many of my rules sets cover many of the periods I have figures for.
ReplyDeleteI'd probably take the Napoleonic, El Cid and WWII collections and play all the rules I have committed (badly) to memory.
I would take:
ReplyDelete-Pulp Alley (deserted island is the perfect setting but it is also setting agnostic)
-Blackstone Fortress and all it's supplements (sort of a board game, sort of a skirmish game)
- my ECW collection with any set of rules (but probably Pike & Shotte with the supplement)
Good suggestions all - answers from the Cap'n and crew will be forthcoming this Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteWait! I still have mine:
ReplyDelete1. Avalon Hill's 'Empires in Arms' - imo the best grand strategic Napoleonic campaign system yet produced
2. Eldritch Horror with all its expansions
3. 'Furioso' with all my Italian Wars minis (and all of KenR's :))
Great survey Paul!
