Welcome to the Painting Challenge. Here you will find the fabulous, fevered work of miniature painters from around the world. While participants come from every ethnicity, gender, age and nationality, they have three things in common: they love miniatures, they enjoy a supportive community, and they want to set themselves against the Challenge. This site features the current year's event along with the archives of past Painting Challenges. Enjoy your visit and remember to come back soon.

From ByronM - Dark Angel Primaris Marines for Kill Team ( 38 Points )
There has been a lot of interest around locally in Kill Team, which is a small skirmish style game set int the grim dark future of Warhammer 40,000. It is a great little game that really is a lot of fun as it breaks up the normal I go / you go of most Games Workshop games and keeps the game small enough that it never seems to get out of hand.
Anyway, on to the miniatures. The Primaris marines were launched a few years back now to a mix of emotions, both love and hate. I personally like the larger size and think the models are top notch, but really dislike (and ignore) the story of larger marines being different and just use them as normal marines in most games as I like the size of the models and think they look better next to other races as Space Marines are supposed to be tower mutated humans, yet somehow over time with scale creep an Imperial Guard model ended up being almost the same size, it just felt wrong.
With Kill Team though the Primaris have a different feel in game compared to the normal marines so they will in fact be used as Primaris marines.
The models themselves had two slight conversions. In Kill Team you are allowed on marine to have a underslung grenade launcher, but I didn't have a model for it, so I went to the bitz box and found a Imperial Guard grenade launcher, chopped it up and stuck it on under one of the bolt rifles. You are also allowed one model to have a sniper bolt rifle, but once again I didn't have a proper model for it. So I chopped off the barrel on one of the guns, added a small length of brass rod, and then attached the tip of the barrel back onto the end. I then added a scope and called it done. I likely should have extended the barrel more than I did, but it works.
The choice of a chapter was easy, Dark Angels were the first space marine army I ever painted (probably 20 years ago) and still my favourite. They are dark and brooding, secretive, full of righteous fury and vengeance, what more could you want!
All of these were done with an airbrush with zenithal highlighting done at the priming level. Meaning sprayed black first then from an angle in first grey then white to provide a good base to work from. Then green was thinned down to a glaze and the model was airbrushed again to cover everything in thin coats. Doing it this way you can see the transitions from green to almost black that are smooth and even, yet its all just one colour of green over the whole model. It makes getting those smooth colour changes really easy.
After the base colour was on it was time to do a quick edge highlight and any details on the model. Then onto guns and weapons. It was then time to go onto adding the decals. After that I painted some chips and slashes on the armour and over the decals so they blended in.
Lastly, I added some grey weathering powder to the lower half of the models to help blend them into the base, as they have been stomping through the rumble in search of heretics.

Lovely work Byron, the work with the airbrush has really paid off , and good work on raiding the bits box - so a base 35 points with an added minion top up to give you 38

ReplyDeleteFirst class job, Byron.
ReplyDeleteGreat work Byron.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry, I'm sure that when GW redo the Imperial Guard sculpts, they will end up exactly the same size as the new Primaris Marines... :)
Lol.... I certainly hope not! Then again it's GW, how long until they resize the whole game to something goofy like 35.5mm scale or something equally odd, just so you have to re-purchase everything from them!!!
DeleteGreat work Byron. You're the Wyatt Earp of the Paint gun.
ReplyDeleteAs a Dark Angels player, I can only love these, brilliant greens you havr there Byron!
