From KyleC - Rebel Alliance - [Casting Couch & Sarah's Limo] - (145pts)

So another squirrel project and one I got from my partner for Christmas. The Star Wars Legion starter boxset with the Empire Vs Rebel Alliance. And have started with the 'easier' side being the Rebels... But only because I am not sure how I want to tackle the white just yet for the Stormtroopers.

Since it's just 2 sets of the same models I painted their headbands red and blue to differentiate them when on the board. Outside of that they are identical however.

It was a bit of a trial and error here to get it to work with so much brown tones without looking terrible overall. I should have put more white/cream into them but we got there in the end. Especially the alien heads.

And since we got the category, thought this chap would do well for it.

Luke to be the star for the Casting Couch. I did try a bit of OSL on his head there as the lightsaber is a bit close and ready to give him a haircut.

And for Sarah's Limit, there were 4 female rebels within the group to be used for it.

Some of the braver and more foreward fighters as 2 are carrying ion blasters. Ready to get up close and personal to tougher opponents.

I haven't tackled the walker for the set as yet but I want to look at some options before tackling it.

So points here would be:

15* 40mm figures - 105 PTS
Casting couch - 20 PTS
Sarah's Limo - 20 PTS
Total - 145 PTS

Next stop with be high adventure with some D&D models needed for a live game coming. And some more terrain because some of it has been waiting for paint for what seems as forever!

Minion Miles: superb figures but 40mm seems a bit generous for scale on the oversized legion figures but with such a nice paint job who could quibble, 40mm it its.  And 2 stages to boot!  Nicely done

  1. These look great Kyle. May I make a suggestion for the Stormtroopers? Coat D'arms light brown super Shader over pure white gives a very subtle highlight with that plasticky look for the armour.

    1. That's a very cool idea for it.. will have to see about it. At the moment I am contemplating doing a gloss varnish and black oil wash to get into the recesses over a pure white basecoat. To be fair.. not fully looking forward to painting them up, so am sidelining them for a bit ( plus primed white, and darth black.. they are table ready as is! :D ).

    2. Yep the gloss varnish will do the same trick I think. They need that shine don't they?

    3. Was thinking they should have a bit of sheen to them for sure. Will have to experiment with one and see how it turns out then!

  2. @Miles - thanks for the comments. Had said 40mm due to going through so many models this challenge that I just measured them and thats what I saw. Happy to make the future ones 28mm then but comparing them to some of the more true 28s coming.. they are quite a bit taller..

Next week's offering will be interesting then to say the least! Lots of squirrels there! :D

    1. If it helps, Curt bumped my Mando from the same range up to 40mm.

    2. I feel better about that for sure. And my heist crew were also in the 40mm range.. I just think its more accurate as although as big as a space marine, they are not in armor.. plus I felt like I was able to get in more details on painting with them at this scale than I do at traditional 28mm figures..

    3. Yep, Legion is acknowledged as being 40mm. In fact it syncs very well to 1:48 scale SW models. Personally, I think they missed an opportunity to do something cool, which would be to place Legion at 15-20mm. It would look great on the tabletop, and the weapon ranges and vehicles would be more relatable (and attainable).

    4. That is good to know then! I mean they have so many details to be tackled for sure.

  3. Excellent painting work. The contrast between the browns and the bright blue is fantastic

    1. Cheers.. saw on the artwork that one group had red bands, so thought a blue band for the second unit would be fitting. Green will be used for a third unit as/when I get one.

  5. Great work on those rich brown shades, different and yet uniform and interesting at the same time!

    1. Thanks James. It was one hurdle I had to overcome as the first attempts were just all one shade.. did not look good at all!

  7. Good job on these. I particularly like the glow of the light saber on Luke's hair. Nice touch.

    1. I did go back and forth on this a bit before just saying 'F it' as worst case I could repaint it. Something that I normally in the past wouldn't have dared to think on a model.

  9. You handled the brown problem very well. Red and blue details pop up nicely and give them life.

  11. Cracking work on these rebels. I like the OSL on Luke.

Just a suggestion, but how about adding the Squirrel tag on your posts? It makes it easier to search for and allows your fellow duelists to see what you are up to.

    1. You are absolutely right on the tag. I normally do it up on my phone and it doesn't auto populate there. Will make a note to keep that in mind for the future ones (and or update on the computer once I have the images uploaded from my phone!) Thanks Stuart!

    1. Thanks. Have started to do a new basing style.. with AK Dark Earth which gives the texture look, and then some nice grass tufts from MDP here in the UK.
