From GregB - A Potpourri of Point Pandering (46 Points)

A random assortment of completed stuff as I scrape for points!

Holy crap! The end of AHPC XI draws nigh...all my glorious plans, my 1500 point target...alas...no time to dwell on my over-ambitious approach. I have all summer for that! No, now is the time to throw away pride, pull together the assorted random bits that I have painted-but-not-yet-submitted, and scrape every single point I can! Thus I present to you all a "Potpourri of Point Pandering"...

10mm WW2 German Panzers

Late model Panzer IIIs - 10mm castings from Pendraken.

These 10mm tanks were painted and based as German "test models" for my ambitions to (re)build my collection for the game "Spearhead". They are late-model Panzer IIIs from Pendraken, based on 50mm squares (to represent platoons) and one on a 50mm round (to represent a battalion command element).

At these smaller scales I try and exaggerate the colours a bit so the contrast pops a little more.

Ready to roll out...but they'll need reinforcements first...

Obviously still a long way to travel on my 10mm WW2 efforts. I went into this edition of the Challenge so sure I would get more of these done...oh well. Next time, right? At least I have some starters to inspire me.

10mm FPW Command

10mm Prussian Command for Franco-Prussian War - figures from Pendraken.

In this edition of the AHPC I was able to finish a fair bit of 10mm stuff for the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. These command figures - a senior command base for the Prussians, and a lower-level command for the French - got finished along the way, and I kept intending to add them in with another submission of a larger unit before the end of the Challenge. This "larger unit" will not happen before the weekend, so here we are...all figures and the flag are from Pendraken.

Having a flag on the base helps him stand out a bit on the table...plus flags are more fun.

The three-figure base, including a standard, will be used to represent a senior commander (i.e. corps command) on the table.

Have to love those French uniforms from 1870...so lovely...

This individual French officer will likely lead a brigade, but of course there are all sorts of ways to scale rules up and down...bottom line, he will lead gloriously!

10mm Byzantine Cavalry

Byzantine heavy cavalry from Magister Millitum - based for "Warmaster Ancients".

When I love something in this hobby, I tend to paint it in multiple scales...but that doesn't mean I make progress, of course...oh well.  This unit of 10mm Byzantine heavy cavalry is comprised of figures from Magister Millitum, and they are based for use with the rules system "Warmaster Ancients".

These Magister Millitum Byzantines are lovely castings.

Perhaps in the next edition of the Challenge you will see some of the other figures that came with this impulse purchase back in the day?

28mm Arab Spearman

Ah, the poor test model, waiting for friends...28mm plastic figure from Gripping Beast.

I actually did manage to paint up a fair bit of 28mm Byzantine stuff during this edition of the Challenge. While my hope is to use these models to fight Dallas' Normans, I am also thinking of opponents for the Byzantines. That is where this figure comes in - a 28mm plastic figure from Gripping Beast, he is a test model for a unit of Arab Spearmen. The "test model" part happened during this edition of the Challenge, but the "OK, let's paint the rest of the unit" part did not. But five points is five points, right? Jeez...I feel like I'm in the naval part of the hobby or something...

So as you can see, having falling short of my target, I won't pride get in the way of trying to get at least a little closer to that target. This motley assembly includes four vehicles, fourteen mounted troops and one infantry figures in 10mm, and then a single 28mm foot figure...I think that is 46 points? Hey...it all counts :)

And my brushes haven't finished yet - the deadline is close, but it still not here yet. I have one more post in mind to cap things off...but for now, best to get the sweepings out of the way on the painting desk, to set the table for what I hope will be a more civilized final submission. Best of luck to all Challengers during the mad finish!

From JasperO: the Hatchery (35 points)

I'd switched back to the 18th century for the Larder, but the Hatchery requires going back in time quite a bit more. This one required a bit of thought again, until Christy suggested the obvious answer. To the editor of Ancient Warfare (apologies for the shameless plug), one bird is supreme, of course: the eagle. In other words, an aquilifer had to be the subject of this blog. Unfortunately, those are all in silver or gold (yes, we had an article about a possible live eagle carried by II Parthica in the early 3rd century AD, but I don't have an appropriate figure), but I hope that's forgivable. And besides, these Foundry Caesarian Romans are just a joy to paint.

Three figures plus the Hatchery bonus should get me 35 points closer to my goal.

Richard P - 28mm Woebetideus Tribesmen & Totem (272 Points)

Probably my final submission for this years event. As mentioned in previous posts we were planning to hold a big weekend Sharp Practice 2 game in April (proper Yarkshire Gamer size games :-)) set in the 18th Century on the fictional Indian Ocean island chain of the Woebetides. The event has now been postponed to September. These figures represent the Monkey Tribe that inhabit the Central Highlands.  Three groups of 12 Tribesmen, two groups of 6 Skirmishers plus Leaders on the individual bases. The Tribesmen and Skirmishers are based using Warbases zombie bases and the Leaders are on bases from Supreme Littleness Designs. These are great as they have areas to write details such as leaders names.

The figures are from various sources including Warlord Games Natal Native Contingent plastic box set, Perrys Zulu plastic box set and a Wargames Factory Zulu set I got off eBay. Also mixed in are some Victrix Numidian bodies and Gripping Beast Arabs as well as bits from sprues from Warlord Games AWI and War of the Spanish Succession ranges. The idea was to make them look tribal without looking completely like Zulus. Shields are a mix from various sources, some Arab, some Zulu and some Ancient.

The Totem was an eBay purchase and will either be an objective for the enemy forces or a deployment point.

From JasperO: Allies (50 points)

Looking at the submissions today, I'm not the only one to start spamming the blog at the last minute, am I, Guy? These guys don't fit the Chambers of Challenge, but I enjoyed painting them anyway. I may need to paint another sergeant with Garand or M1 Carbine, but otherwise, this .30 machine gun team completes what I need to put an Armored Platoon for Chain of Command on the table. The BAR gunner and NCO with submachine gun give me more options for support, and allow me to switch out some figures for a more warm or cold weather-themed platoon.

The Russian figures are part of a new project. I bought a bunch of painted Russians from a friend last year. I'm rebasing them and adding some figures that I need and were missing. As part of that, I thought it'd be fun to paint my own leaders. So here are three NCOs, a lieutenant and a Commissar, because you need one, right?

These ten figures should net me 50 points. Only about five posts to go to get to my goal, and just over 24 hours...!

From PeterD Italian Cruiser Trieste (2 points)

Second last day of the challenge and second last post fro me, the Italian cruiser Trieste from GHQ in 1/2400.  I had the model primed in one of the first batches of work for this year's challenge but she's been kicking around the work table semi finished since December.

Trieste and her sisters were armed with 8" guns but only lightly armoured.  Her sparse superstructure are typical of e 1920s era designs,  The float plane on the foc'sle seems precariously perched and required that she steam into the wind to launch it.

I've painted her in a camouflage scheme that she wore in 1942 even though it comes from a later date than the era that I'm focusing on. She had a busy war attacking and escorting convoys.  She was torpedoed and damaged by HMS/M Utmost in late 1941 and sunk by US bombers in port in 1943.

There's some interesting history in the naming of Italian 8" gunned cruisers of this era, all seven were na med for former Habsburg territories taken over by Italy after WW1.  The three name sake territories for the  Trento class (Trento, Trieste and half sister Bolzano) all remain Italian.  But three of the four Zara class (Zara, Pola and Fiume) were named for territories that are now Croatian (and renamed) with Gorizia being the sole exception.   None of the seven ships survived the war.

As Trieste sails off so do my entries in the Naval Side Duel.  That's another hull and another two points and a tip of my hat to Adam and the other participants in that challenge.

AdamC: Shore fortress and Ladies for a Teleport? home (12 or 22? Points)

This will be my final post not counting a wrap up and group shot sometime next week.

We have a small shore fortress another 3d Print courtesy of Arofan it will make fine shore terrain for Black Seas.

I have a harbor attack scenario it will be perfect for.

Here we have the last two (three) ladies from the Griping Beast pack.
This mother and child is one of my favorite pieces form he set.  I can imagine that she is looking after the men of her village as they troop away, her daughter crying on her shoulder.
I kept the outfit simple. She may be seeing her man off but she's got work to do latter and she's ready to get to it.
Last we have an older woman who looks like she is moving cautiously perhaps at night on her way to the privy or hoping some raiders won't notice het.
Her "Lower" clothing are simple and a little dirty but her shawl is a fine purple with a white boarder clearly she a woman of some standing or she accidently took her mistresses' shawl in the dark.  The fort is small I'll claim 2 points The ladies are 5 points each as 25mm figures.  I don't know if I get the teleport points (20) when I don't have a dungeon destination but perhaps Sarah The Sorceress and drop me at home or at least outside the dudgeon?   Thanks to all especially Curt and the Minions,  for another lovely challenge.

From JohnS - Still in the Peninsula with the Spaniards - 85pts

Why is it that I don't achieve my painting goals? Maybe there is a reason I am known as Slowpainter.

Far from being the Squirrel I normally am in the Challenge (Zero Squirrel points so far!) I have tried to complete a portion of a single army, Napoleonic Spanish. To that end I present the next four stands.

Three more Militia stands, a Militia Officer and one lonely Fusilier stand. I painted 3 of the Fusiliers about 2 months ago and due to a complete failure in basic counting skills, didn't have enough for a stand. This has now been rectified.

The Militia are for what I refer to as my "Side Plume Regiment", only because the previous Militia regiment I painted had the plume at the front of the top hat. They will become part of the Provincial de Burgos battalion for my Talavera project.

These chaps may all get another round of "magic goop" shading but as it has been raining for weeks here in my part of Sydney (I live in the officially wettest suburb of Sydney, near a river and a big bay) I didn't want to chance them not drying before the clock stops.

Although I have not achieved anywhere near my plans this Challenge (NEVER renovate during Painting Challenge time should be a rule) I am happy that I have a solid start to my Spaniards.

All going well I may sneak in a bit of a Squirrel before Brushes Down. Toodle Pip!

17 x 28mm Infantry = 85 points

From DaveD - 10mm siege towers - curtgeld- 76 points

This is my last entry for this year . A year ago we were working on JamesM’s  “For Joshua” project to raise charity funds for the group who helped him in times of bereavement. We will be back around re-animating this during the year now Covid is looking like retreating and lets us meet and display the collection prior to fund raising . So in terms of Curtgeld it’s aimed at JamesM .

For this entry I had picked up some 10mm MDF siege towers from Pendraken , I have added some thin balsa strips from the cross braces etc - it’s really helped to bring them to life. I have added some crew and warriors/bowman etc as well - I just need to find the missing bag of crew I know I have to add to two of the towers

Points wise ..

So the towers are a least as big as 15mm tank - so I am going 8 points each .32 points

24 figures = 24 points

Curtgeld = 20

So 76 points I reckon .

from RayR - The Chamber of Challenge - Alter of the Snow Lord - Gendarmes 68 pts

I've finally found my way to the Alter of the Snow Lord!

The Altar of the Snow Lord: In this final chamber our very own Snow Fiend will select a challenge for you, as a tribute to the painting Gods.

From Curt..........Okay Ray! I heard you mention that, in the long and distant past, you and the Rejects collected 15mm Italian Wars figures to do Pavia. Well, colour me intrigued - I'd like to see a unit of these done up. What say you?

For my Oubliette post a few weeks ago, I painted up some 15mm Renaissance infantry that
have been laying around for far too long. These Gendarmes have also been laying in a box for far too long and it was about time they got a lick of paint!

The figures are from Venexia, which I bought at Salute form the original Venexia owners many moons ago.
They can be used for either side of the Battle of Pavia in1525.

I'm pleased how they came out, trouble is what do I do with the rest of the unpainted figures??
12 x  15mm Cavalry @4 pts each, 48 pts
 bonus round 20 points

For a total of 68 pts

From Barks: Scenery odds and sods (20 points)

Here's some miscellaneous bits of scenery I've 3D printed (all from Printable Scenery), with some of my previously painted figures for scale:

Cavern elevations

Dwarf statues

Pit

Barricades

Ruler for scale

There's about 1STC here, so 20 points.
