I received this wonderful email today from HeatherH, Evan and Grant's mother. Heather is the sister of my most excellent friend Douglas, and is a great supporter of her sons' interest in the hobby. Anyway, I'll let Heather introduce herself to you all:
Hi Curt,
The boys were having so much fun painting miniatures that I could no longer resist the lure of challenge! As you can see from the inscription on the bottom of the Dungeon and Dragons miniature, it is a 1990 cast from Grenadier that Douglas purchased a couple of decades ago. He gave Grant and Evan his unpainted stash of figurines last year, and I think that Evan (who is home sick) will complete painting the other ones today. The boys are worried that I am now hooked!
Hugs,
Heather
From Curt:
Heather, welcom to the Challenge! Is this truly your first go at painting miniatures? If so, you're a very quick study and really should keep it up - you have great brush control and a good eye.
I particularly like the 'punch' of colour from the green and red buckler and the banding around the spearhead. As a suggestion for the future, you might want to try a bit of diluted black or blown ink and lightly 'wash' the armour with a soft brush. The ink will settle in the creases and edges to better define the chainmail and armour plating - giving it more of a 3D look.
Finally, I find it awesome that this is one of Doug's D&D minis from the 90s - he'll be delighted to know that it outlasted his hairline (and mine for that matter) and is getting some airplay after all these years. (Be careful, he may want it back now!)
Again, it was wonderful to get this from you Heather. Hey, you should join us next year - I know that Anne and Tamsin would love the company!
Best regards.
That's an excellent blast from the past. Top work!
ReplyDeleteThank you! It was a lot of fun joining the challenge, and it is very lovely that Curt added my name to the list of participants! Cheers, Heather
DeleteGreat to have you involved. And very well completed.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It has been great fun looking at all of the amazing work that people have submitted, and an honour to be added to the group! Cheers, Heather
DeleteExcellent job on the painting, my first attempts were terrible. The figure is great, the massive chin makes him look like Desperate Dan
ReplyDeleteThank you! It was a lot of fun to do the miniature, and much easier than the tiny 15 mm figurines that my son, Evan, did earlier!! Cheers, Heather
DeleteI would say a better first effort than the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteIan
Thank you! The only painting experience that I have had recently is working on our home renovations, so this miniature took a lot less time! Cheers, Heather
DeleteWelcome in Heather! For your first figure, you've done a marvelous job :)
ReplyDeleteAs Curt said, you should join us next year - I'm sure that over the next 9 months you can learn a lot of the tricks of the trade and based on this first effort you will be able to outshine many of us ;)
Thank you so much! I have looked at the amazing work that has been posted by others, and I think that it would definitely take more than 9 months to get up to speed!! Cheers, Heather
DeleteGood work I really like how the shield adds some color.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I like the color for the shield as well, and was interested in seeing how delicate the color detail needs to be to "stay in the lines!" Cheers, Heather
DeleteThat may well be the coolest entry of the whole challenge! Welcome aboard Heather and congrats on such a wonderful first effort with the brush.
ReplyDeleteThank you! My brother, Douglas, was very happy to see that the miniatures have finally been painted! It was fun to have such a lovely figurine to work on for my first effort! Cheers, Heather
DeleteHello Heather - welcome to the Challenge! As Curt says, if that's your first painted miniature, you may have a real skill for this hobby! There are a lot of great, female, miniature painters. You might have yourself a new hobby. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteThank you! It is, in fact, the first miniature that I have painted. In fact, I have not even done any painting on a canvas before, so it was fun to try my hand at it! Cheers, Heather
DeleteGreetings Heather, and well done!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I can certainly see why people enjoy the process of painting miniatures, and I look forward to revisiting the postings at my leisure now that the challenge is complete. Cheers, Heather
DeleteWell done Heather! Cheers, PD
ReplyDeleteThank you! What a lovely group of painters to be an honorary member of! My youngest son, Evan, pointed out that I was in last place, but I was thrilled to be included in such an amazing group! Cheers, Heather
DeleteKeep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your words of encouragement! It was a lot of fun working on the project and seeing the incredible work that people did! Cheers, Heather
DeleteGreetings, Heather, and welcome aboard! Lovely first effort and a model I sent on towards certain doom many a time! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you! It was very fun to paint the figurine, since my brother (Douglas), Curt and their other friends spent many an hour hunkered in our basement playing games when we were teenagers! Who would have thought that a few decades later that I would be painting the miniature! Cheers, Heather
DeleteWelcome Heather, great of you to join the mad house. Great first effort on this classic mini
ReplyDeleteThank you! It was great fun working on such a classic figurine! Cheers, Heather
