From Barks-Genestealers & Imperial Assault (55 points)

Okay, so this is it. Brushes down. For my final entry, a Science Fiction Double Feature.

Genestealers

I failed to resist Deathwatch Overkill when it came out a couple of weeks ago. When I played 40K, about twenty years ago, I had a 'stealer cult. These new figures are fantastic and hit me right in the nostalgia. (As for value? Hmmm). They catch the mood and details of the old metal hybrids perfectly.
Genestealers!

I got Space Hulk a couple of years ago, but it is sitting on my shelf daring me to paint it, with its difficult colours, hyperdetail, and precise clean lines. So, Overkill made me man up and work out how to paint stealers again, by practising on a few from Space Hulk.

I wanted a clean, high contrast, reproducible look and am happy with the result. I highlighted up to pure white on the claws and a pale blue-grey on the carapace, trying to keep it thin and crisp.

Overkill comes with two purestrains, but I've only painted one as I am doing the other one slower to feature on a step-by-step tutorial for my blog in the future. I did do the two familiars, which are cute, and then got ambitious and jumped into the patriarch- I usually save the special stuff for the end of a project. There's a lot of work in this big guy, he's a real centrepiece.

Bantha

I had to have this Imperial Assault figure as soon as I saw it. I can't wait to have it barreling down canyons into hapless rebel scum!

Coda

So that's it from me. This, my first AHPC, has been immense fun and a very powerful impetus to my painting. There were a few figures I'd planned to do but ran out of time, and a few figures I had no idea I'd do and was very glad I did.
Before
After

I've enjoyed seeing all the effort and artistry that has gone into this Challenge globally. It has been a pleasure, and I hope to participate again.

This is Barks: Out.

From Minion Dave

A fine finale to your challenge Barks. Thise stealers really do look awesome - for the sheer overall effect and the extra on the patriach i am going to top you up another 10 minion bonus points. As for the Bantha - well  I can see why you just have to have it...

Its been a pleasure to have you along on your first challenge , and we look forward to you checking in next time..your final total brings you up just behind Millsy - always better than just in front of him....

  2. Fantastic stuff, I do like a good genestealer or two. I've resisted the set so far but I remember the old cult and their limousines.....

    1. There's a company that does unofficial cult limousines, very nice indeed...

  3. Ooooh that Bantha is really very nice! I like your nids as well but I am a way bigger Sw fan than 40K.

  4. Great 'Stealers. You (and GW) seem to really have it it out of the park with these.

  5. Great final entry Barks! Until now I've managed to resist the new box and it's genestealers. These are really starting to make me far too tempted...

  7. I'm going to try to resist the new box game, but those gribblies are going to make it hard! Excellent brushwork on them all, the basework on the Patriarch is done very well too. I don't miss the classic one on the throne so much now! ;)

    1. The final scenario is the patriarch on his throne, and it looks very cool. It would be nice to have the old classic one for that!

  8. Fabulous work Barks! I have the redux of Space Hulk at well (such a fun game). You've done a terrific job on your 'stealers. I especially like the groundwork on the Patriarch. Also, that Bantha is the dog's danglies - I am so picking one of those up. Great to have you with us this year and I'm delighted to hear you had a good time of it.
