From TobiP - 28mm ACW Union Infantry (77 Points)

My first "regular" entry (after the "cold" special theme) is a small unit of Union infantrymen from Perry Miniatures. They are mostly plastic figures except for the three single based figures.

I'm going to use them as part of my already large army that I've painted and collected for the brilliant "Longstreet" ruleset. The function of the single based figures is to act as markers for sharpshooters (the two kneeling figures) and heroes (the standing figure, waving his less heroic comrades to come with him).

As you can see they're not painted to my highest standard, but I like them well enough - especially as part of the whole army. If it hadn't been for this contest, I fear I would not have painted them for another few months, as I'm really quite fed up with painting shades of blue... so it's probably a good thing this army project is nearly finished :-)

From Curt:
Beautiful work Tobi. The colour hues and shading are brilliant and your photography flatters them very nicely. How many units have you done up for this project? I haven't checked out 'Longstreet' yet, though I usually like Sam Mustafa's rules. I do like the idea of using single figures as markers - anything to get away from unsightly cards, chits, etc. cluttering up the table.
These 15 fellows and their brave banners will fetch Tobi 77 points. Great stuff!

  1. Wow... just simply Wow, Tobi. I especially like the slightly yellowed Black and White picture. Although its the close-up colour shot which really shows what a corking paint job you've done. Lovely stuff.

  8. Brilliant work - they are well beyond the highest standard I can muster.

I also really like the Longstreet rules, especially the elegantly designed campaign system.

  9. First Longstreet is my favorite Wargame rule set for any period I cannot recommend them enough. Nice work on the figures and I like the (photo shopped?) back ground and the Black and White photos for display.

  12. Terrific work and well presented. The blue is very subtle, a lighter shade than some would use for Union coats, but not wrong and it gives these figures a lot of life. What really makes it all work for me is the drum, a bright little gem in the middle of these fine figures. Great work.

  13. Many thanks for your very kind comments! I'm happy you like them so well.

@Curt: Yes, Longstreet really IS good. As Miles has pointed out especially the campaign system really works well. It is the only ruleset that has managet to get me into ACW-gaming... I've already 8 (somewhat bigger) units as ell as 9 pieces of artillery. As they are mostly painted but not yet based it will be after the challange that I'm going to take the time to finish the basing of these and put some pictures of the complete army up on my blog.

@ Samuli: The flag is from GBM Design. They offer fantastic quality and service, I can not reccomend them highly enough (all my Napoleonics use their flags, too)

@ Adam: The background is actually a picture of an old calendar I got from some shop or bank years back. I'm collecting all sorts of giveaway-calendars for exactly that purpose - I like taking pictures of miniatures with a fitting background. In the case of my samurai for the "cold"-theme, in fact the calendar-picture was first and gave me the inspiration of what to paint.

With ACW, black and white effects (especially in sepia) really look well, that is one of the great pluses of that period for me, as I really like the photography-part (black and white ancients would just look silly ;-)

@ Michael: A very interesting observation, I didn't notice before but you're absolutely right.

Many thanks again, everyone - this kind of feedback really gets me back at my painting table...
