From Curt: Fantasy figures for 'Forbidden Psalm' (92.5 Points)

Hi All,

We had a rollicking game of 'Forbidden Psalm' this past Friday for which I blitzed a few figures for the scenario. Being jazzed on the fun I managed to get a couple extra done this weekend.

First up are three 'Disembowelled Ghouls'. These marvellously manky mooks are from Knucklebone Miniatures. I regret to say that no fancy lotions or skin serums are going to help these lads.

Three 'Sock Goblins' from Westphalia Miniatures. I particularly like the guy with the dirty sock pulled over his honker, taking a big snort.

A group of poor deaduns from Vae Victus Miniatures. An admittedly fast and choppy paintjob. *cringes* In my defence, I figure they're dead and aren't really meant to look their best.

Three doughty adventurers ready to go dungeon traipsing. We have: 'Tim the Torchbearer', 'Cathcart the Cat Catcher' and 'Gundalf the Fire Wizard' (with his trusty 'Wand of .45 Magic Missiles'). I really enjoyed working on all these figures, especially the pink boa for Gundalf (I envision him as a fearless, fashion-forward kind of guy). Tim and Gundalf are Knucklebone designs, while Cathcart is from Collective Studio.

And finally the big punchline to last Friday's adventure: 'The Corpse Collector'! His jam is that after he slaps you around for a bit, he swipes you up and impales you up on his Thule Corpse Rack (TM). This way he keeps you fresh for future road nibbles. I know, eewww! This big boy is from PrintYourMonsters.

As to points, we have nine 30mm figures, eleven 30mm half-figures and a 90mm boss monstie. The 30mm stuff should come to 72.5 points, and as to the 'Collector', let's equate him as a 28mm vehicle for 20 points (a precedent we've used in past years for these larger models). If that seems right with our esteemed Minion then this lot should give me 92.5 points, or thereabouts.

Oh, and 17 skulls! :)

Thanks for popping in for a peak!

- Curt

Quite the electric mix of models for a games night! I quite like the wizard and his .45 magic missles.. reminds me of a barbarian who can cast fist and smash 😅 And the dead bodies look the biz even if run through the slapchop method (not that it's that clear this was the case!).

And will give you the benefit of the doubt on the 'Collector' there as he does seem rather large!

Great work Curt!

From Rhunt - Space Marines, Elves and odds and sods (135 pts)

This entry is mostly Space Marines. I also have some more of the yucky to paint elves. I'm also adding my second Denethor model, a Greek hoplite and some Chaos Dwarf (Abyssal Dwarf) artillery.

First up are more of my new Space Smurf army.

My dad got me this model in Canterbury when he was in the UK in 2022. He built if for me right before the Challenge.

I can switch out the weapons but only painted this one so far.

I think I want decals but I haven't decided yet.

My next model is a High Elf archer. I still don't like these models. I can't wait to be done painting them.

Next up is a Reaper Bones model my dad gave me. He might be an elf warrior for Pathfinder of just another fighter.

I liked painting him better than the archer.

Next up is five more Space Marines. These are a lot of fun to paint and I like these models a lot. My dad didn't mind putting them together as much as he did the elves.

Here are close-ups of the Sergeant.

I also finished another five elves. The first archer was done last Sunday and I finished these on Friday.

Next up is another Denethor model. This one is brand new. My dad went to Warhammer World three weeks ago and got his one for me. Now I have two but this one is when he is trying to burn himself and Faramir and is rescued by Gandalf, Pippen and Beregond. This is for the Front Desk and New Acquisitions.

Next up is a Greek hoplite that my dad gave me. He said the Warlord hoplites suck and I'll hate painting it. He was right. But it was easy. This got me the history desk.

The last model is an Abyssal Dwarf (Chaos Dwarf) flame thrower crew from Mantic Games. My dad and I play Kings of War and my army is Chaos Dwarfs. This guy rolls 15 dice so it's really scary.

In Summary:

1 28mm Space Marine jeep @ 20 pts = 20 pts

5 28mm Space Marines @ 5 pts = 25 pts

1 28mm Elf Warrior @ 5 pts = 5 pts

6 28mm High Elves @ 5 pts = 30 pts

1 28mm Hoplite @ 5 pts = 5 pts

1 28mm Artillery flame thrower @ 10 pts = 10 pts

History Bonus = 20 pts

Front Desk and New Acquisitions = 20 pts

Total = 135 pts

Great work here Rhys, and a variety of pieces on display here! I also have issues with Elf models (too clean blah!) but you have done a great job getting through them. Love the Chaos Dwarf ( and who doesn't like a Chaos Dwarf! ) and hope to see more of them in the challenge!

If I could offer a piece of advice on the models, and its mostly personal preference, would be to paint the rim of the bases of the models a single color once the model itself is finished. Either in a straight black, an old school goblin green, or a color matching your gaming table. It will help to bring another layer of cohesion in an army or squad.

Looking forward to more paint bombs like this one in the future!

From PeteF: Kickstarter Fantasy Terrain - New Acquisitions (40 points)

I'm adding to my list of things learned on The Painting Challenge: Do not try to prime stuff with a rattle can when it's cold.

Woefully underprepared for this year's challenge and in a post Christmas food & booze haze I thought it would be a good idea to at long last get started.  The Front Desk & New Acquisitions section presented, nay demanded, that I begin to chip away at an oversized kickstarter package that arrived earlier this year.

This fantasy terrain is from Mantic and part of their Terrain Crate line.  The kickstarter was for a generous amount of terrain and I rather regret doubling down on the fantasy terrain as they were also offering some nice looking sci-fi stuff.

I decided to go with magnets so that the terrain pieces will fit in a smaller container and can be mixed and matched into various odd looking constructions.

Since Osprey hasn't yet published an official fantasy terrain colour scheme, the next challenge after messing up the priming, was deciding which paints to use.  I decided to go all in on red tones for the plate corally thing and go for purple plus complementary colours for the bulbous planty object (with teeth).  But first I had to paint black brush on primer over the failed rattle can white.

This was "planned" to be a quick paint job with speedpaints/contrasts but the priming hiccup meant a more traditional layering approach.

I can use this stuff for both fantasy and sci fi tables - especially once the whole crate is done - there are many many more of these strange looking animals and plants (or fungi?).

It was fun to get back into the swing of painting as work and life in general have got in the way of reducing the height of the Pile of Potential (Ed: didn't you mean Shelf of Shame?).

Summary

This looks like about 1 terrain cube's worth so:

1 terrain cube: 20 points

New Acquisitions Bonus: 20 points

Total: 40 points

Always wince when I hear spray can mishaps due to cold.. almost like PTSD for myself there! But you salvaged the prime aspect wonderfully as the finished pieces look amazing! The teeth terrain especially with all the yellow fangs ready to strike that squad that ventured off the wrong way! Also great to see them magnetized as that will open up so many options for you. Great job!

As for terrain cube.. sure.. sounds about right to me there.
