From DaveD - "Stay in the boat!" - PBR and crew (45 points)

Along with getting some VC done I have also managed to get the Patrol Boat, River completed. The PBR is by Empress miniatures and comes with the crew to depict the film Apocalypse Now. They are really good figures , and the boat was nicely cast too. I am using the Empress ones for this as Gringos don't currently do some suitable  , and I am not worried about the size mismatch as they will be suitably separate on the table.

Twin 50 cal and surfboard to the front

a 50 cal ,  M60 and grenade launcher to the rear.

I magnetised the canopy so it can used with or without it  and so you  can see the chief driving the boat

I am very pleased with the end result of the waves and wake.

There are 4 full crew and the half one manning the twin 50 cal . I made a shim from XPS to lift the front of the boat to indicate a bit more speed. The wake and waves were made from a combination of  hot glue and "Dogs Bollocks" sticks to everything crystal clear adhesive applied using a cartridge gun. - many thanks to Ken - Yarkshire Gamer  for the handy little tutorial on his channel - the one for making shell splashes.

Having done this one I fancy getting another as I found a video with one with flamethrower !  doh!

The river mat is one of two I had made up by Deepcut Studios , each is  600x2400 and has a brown tinge to it as we used it for the Nile with the Sudan collection .

So points

1 28mm Vehicle = 20 points

4.5 x 28mm figures - 22.5

So  42.5 for my total and the NeverEnding Cold War side dual

That PBR is fantastic, Dave! I've added a couple of bonus points for the "dog's bollocks".

From MartinC: Swamp Queen (20pts)

Just a random post. This  figure is the Swamp Queen, a 3D print from Sundered Studios, my favourite 3D supplier now that Kyle has moved on

This a a beautiful 54mm figure and painted really well, but photographed terribly

54mm cavalry = 20pts

That's a great model, Martin! 20 points whizzing your way.

From MattW - Infamy, Infamy of a sort… Lady Sarah…Science Fiction, General Maximus & Bob 185 points

 Infamy Infamy ....well sort of

First up this week a quick ride in lady Sarah’s limousine from Black and White to Science Fiction

For my payment let me present Marguerite of Anjou, painted for the invasion of England during the War of the Roses, a Perry 28mm miniature. Inspiration for her dress from her portrait in Angers Chateau which we visit regularly.

Next up the Science Fiction challenge are two versions of Cybermen, I remember seeing these fine chaps for the first time on Dr Who in the seventies as a young child, they are a mix of early and late versions and almost feel like cheating in some way….simple silver, ink wash, highlight. I would like some more but not sure of the maker, the older type were soft plastic and later Cybermen are hard plastic. I have painted them both with moon bases as that was the original story I seen in the seventies.

Old and new Cybermen

My favourite Cybermen miniatures

Third one complete for Green, but have another planned....

Infamy, Infamy…..of a sort, Foundry miniatures naked Germans, these are great miniatures, but skin takes a lot longer than you think…I still have 30 odd too do…. Some more Infamy coming!

Naked Germanics, must be a hot summer for once
Naked Germanics

Four more Germanic Archers from Warlord Games these are really lovely miniatures, and will join the skirmish madness!

And who doesn't like a bunch of naked, hairy Germans? Well, Maximus doesn't, I suppose. Nice mixed bag of stuff from you this week, Matt!

From SimonG: The Dwarf, The Giant and The Priest - Three More Studio Stops (102 points)

Well it has been a very busy week here in East Kent with the tires on our studio buggy squealing as we rocket around the back lot. After our first session in black and white last week we've hitched a ride in Lady Sarah's limousine courtesy of Kehli the dwarf adventuress from Descent -- Legends Of The Dark.

I really enjoyed working on this figure -- well nigh perfect casting and great characterisation. Apologies for those that know the original as I did this all free hand without any references beyond a set of hairstyle images!  Clearly Kehli spends some of her loot down the stylist 😉

Macro photography is pretty harsh on your painting and I had to go back and retouch the eyes and the nose ring (the red thing on the right side of her nose!) several times, and I'm not sure if these photos actually show the final result -- still well worth the effort given the quality of this nice figure.

Next Stop - High Adventure

Lady Sarah's limousine drops us off in the wild mountains of Uzbekistan where we're visiting with Fay Wray. It's a little known fact that after her early success with Mr Kong, Fay had a long and successful career as a crypto-zoologist tracking down cryptids all over the globe.  Today we see her with her cameraman on an expedition in the 1940s interviewing the last remaining Titan, Belorossus!

This is actually a combination of one Wargames Foundry 28mm Medieval civilian and a 10mm Red3 cold war reporter crew which was supplied as a freebie when I ordered some vehicles. I submit that this may be the smallest female figure submitted in this cycle and hope Lady Sarah enjoys what I did with her!

Obviously basing needed some thought when you are dealing with this diversity in scales -- I am enjoying how the challenge is making me practise a variety of new skills and different presentations.

Caelum Expectet

Our final stop for today is the set of a historical drama, a medieval romp called "Let Heaven Wait". On set today is the lead Toby the handsome herdsman as he leds his prize bull to market.

As you can see there's a priest busy trying to save souls but it seems that most are too hard working to listen and worry about their eternal rest! The figures are a mix of the aforementioned Wargames Foundry plus a figure or two from FrontRank (which may be where the ox came from as well). There's been some modest conversion to put the priest on a box, add some burdens to two of the figures and so on.

I enjoyed some of the details in painting this up -- especially the differences between markings on oxen versus horses and the slop details on the bald front figure. Basing included a custom made slab of cobbles made of modelling clay finished with a roller plus two cow pats and a dog 💩!

So my tour round the studio so far has included three stops which today yield me 102 points

  • One 28mm figure and 20point Lady Sarah bonus = 25points
  • One 28mm and two 10mm figures plus 20 point High Adventure bonus = 27 points
  •  Six 28mm figures and 20 point Historical Drama bonus = 50 points

After all of this studio nonsense it's finally down to some real wargames figures next week with a batch of Roman Legionnaires for my Jewish Wars project -- look forward to sharing them with you next week.

Technical Note: After my previous focus stacking program (Focus Stacker) seemed to stop working I've switched to HeliconFocus which so far is giving great results with the trial version. I'm trying to avoid having to purchase PhotoShop! I use a Nikkor AF-S 105mm 1:2.8G ED lens and process on a MacBook Pro.

Using a 28mm figure as a giant for 10mm? Brilliant idea! Nice work all round, Simon.

From AlanD - Inter-War Armoured Cars for Under Construction (120 Points)

I've had a break from painting turnips this week with a group of inter-war armoured cars.

It seems like I only seem to work on my inter-war projects during the Painting Challenge, so I'm claiming these for the Under Construction bonus. I was looking back over past Challenges, and saw that I first started painting things for the German Revolution back in 2016. I added some more bits last year, and here we are again.

This beast, a Garford-Putilov, will join the Freikorps I painted in 2016.

A year or so ago I also painted a bunch of Poles for the Polish-Soviet War of 1920, and the next two armoured cars will give them a bit of punch. The diminutive Ford with its colourful camouflage was a Polish design, hastily thrown together in 1920. The Austin-Putilov is based on a well-known photo of a Red Army vehicle that was captured in May 1920. The Poles retained the original Bolshevik vehicle name, cheekily adding their own with the date of capture.

Finally, here are a couple of vehicles for the Red Army in 1920. I don't have any other figures for that particular army yet, but I'm sure that can be remedied at some point! The hal-track is an Austin Kegresse, and it's joined by a Izhorsky-Fiat. I've deliberately left it without markings so I can use it for a few different armies.

I was trying to remember who made these models. The Polish Ford and Austin-Putilov are from Company B. I think the others are from Brigade Games, but I could well be wrong.  Hope you like them! five vehicles plus the Under Construction bonus should give me 120 points for the week. Thank you Tamsin!

That's a great set of armoured cars, Alan. Good to see you return to your inter-war stuff.

From DaveD: 'Nam - VC on the trail (40 points)

The 'Nam clear out continues. Having completed USMC vehicles it was time to add some for the VC. Now what better to fight the dastardly capitalists with than a bike and an RPG.

These are from Simon at Full Metal Miniatures . I have added a few RPG's to them from a weapons pack he does as well .

Damn - someone call the B52’s up ! These are tough critters.

So the equivalent of 4 mounted figures = 40 points , that also count to Neverending Cold War.

You thought I was joking about the B52 didn’t you.😂😂

The kit is easy .. the flight stand is the bitch! 😂😂😂😂

Nice unit of cycling VC, Dave!
