 This week I'm backtracking to the Great Abyssal and moving to Cybertron. For the planet I completed a World Eaters Legion Contemptor Dreadnought from Forgeworld. Contemptor dreadnoughts are basically robots, except they have the remains of a space marine floating inside controlling them. There's no coming out after you've been installed so you basically become the operating system. This dreadnought is armed with a heavy flamer and assault cannon.

I'm keeping up with my long tradition of submitting a final entry on the last few hours of the challenge, with some more Epic goodness! 

The last week as been, for me and many others, absolutely insane due to that viral bombing, i.e. the despicable Covid-19. I work for the Ministry of Health here in Québec, and to say I've been very busy would be an understatement of massive proportion! The last nine days have been without a doubt the most challenging of my professional life. I basically work from 7 to 11 non-stop, one emergency after another. But Its no time to whine, as I get the luxury of isolating myself and work from home, and I tip my hat off to all those front line workers in health institutions across the world, the real heroes of this crisis. 

Anyways...I wasn't able to paint anything this week, but I did managed to paint a bunch of small stuff before the apocalypse started. And so I'm taking some time off while eating dinner to post what I did, as it would a real waste to miss the deadline.

First we have a tuple of Predator Destructors, the classic tank of the Adeptus Astartes (Space marines, for us old timers). My favourite, design wise. I always have fun painting them.

Next up a tuple of Vindicators, the Imperial siege tank based on the Rhino chassis used by many Space Marine Chapters. This one boasts the most powerful weapon of its type in the Adeptus Astartes' standard armoury, the Demolisher Cannon. Though short-ranged, the Vindicator's Demolisher Cannon is capable of destroying enemy armour and fortifications in a single shot. I was missing artillery...

My very first try at weathering. Looks cool, no?

Then a duo of Land Raider Achilles. This one is a heavily armoured variant of the standard Land Raider we all know and love. It's badass looking.

And then the "Piece de resistance", my man, Fulgrim. Fulgrim, also known in the time before the Horus Heresy as The Phoenician, is the Primarch of the Emperor's Children "Traitor" Legion. He possessed silvery-white hair and was quite vainglorious, as his entire life was dedicated to the pursuit of perfection in all things; physical, mental and spiritual.

Amazing little figure, full of details.

Here he is accompanied with a quatuor of Contemptor Dreadnoughts. My initial plan was to show him off with a regiment of his Phoenix Guards but yeah, fuck you COVID-19.

All these were supposed to see action in our first game of Epic with John on Sunday, but alas borders between us are now closed, and the fight will have to wait. Even the Horus Heresy has to pause for the virus. 

So...

• 12 6mm vehicles : 24 points
• 4 Dreadnoughts : 4 pts 
• 1 Fulgrim (I'd suggest at least 1 points, as you can see he's no mere 6mm figure)

Total : 29 points (the sad fate of the 6mm painter).

I managed to keep my focus on Epic pretty much all challenge. Sure, less points, but my force is getting impressive and that's what the challenge is for!

That's a great looking finale Iannick! I do like the purple and gold scheme, and that Fulgrim is clearly big enough to warrant a point.

From IannickM : Ultramarines at Millsy's Millpond (60 points)

When I first saw the different locations on the map, Millsy's Millpond was high on my list. I'm a nostalgia junkie, and so the idea of painting some old school figure seemed like an obvious stop for me! My first idea was to paint up some classic Oldhammer chaos champions or Ral Partha, but like it happens so often in this challenge my path got diverted. I've been furiously painting some Epic lately and I didn't want to divert my momentum. Luckily, Games Workshop has been at it for a long time and so was Epic, before its untimely demise.

The first wargame *battle* I played was the original Space Marine. Me and my brother got the boxset I believe for Christmas. We already had Warhammer but other than a few skirmishes (we were poor and building armies took forever when you could afford two blisters a month!) never played a big game. This bothered my father and he went to the game store and asked the guys for something "we could play straight out of the box". What we got was Space Marine, a massive box with LOTS of figures and terrain.

The game was great value, and to this day the figures hold up very well. So why not paint some for Millsy's pond? And I know the man is a big fan of Epic, so I'm sure he approves.

As I mentioned in my last post I've been working on an Emperor's Children force to face John's Blood Angels, but I've also been collecting a second force to paint a loyalist side to my traitors. The goal is to have two playable forces, as I'd like to surprise my brother with a classic game when he comes back from Japan, where he's been living for the last few years.

And so here's my first stab at the Emperor's finest, and my brother's favourite, the good ol' Ultramarines.

We start with a classic, with 4 Rhino armoured transport.

These are the original plastic tanks from the 1989 boxset. And when I say original, I mean original, i.e. the plastic tanks I got when I was 10! One of them was already painted an horrible yellow and since stripping these plastics is a real pain I just undercoated over the original paint job. The details were a bit softer but now its not noticeable.

Then 5 Contemptor Dreadnoughts, once again the classic plastic sculpts from way back. To be honest I'm not sure when these guys were released. Early 90s I would assume. They aged gracefully, and were an absolute joy to paint, with crisp details.

And here's the tiny gang together. These are more of a test run if you will, as I intend to go back to my traitors in anticipation of my upcoming game. But I'm happy I found my blue recipe and my colour scheme for the upcoming project.

 So...

• 4 Epic Rhinos : 8 pts
• 5 Epic Dreadnoughts : 5 pts
• Millsy's pond : 30 pts
• Bonus point for figures pre-1990 (1989, thats cutting it close!) : 10pts

Ahem. Sorry about that. I 'kinda' like Epic too. I still have my original Dark Angels force from 1992. It now takes up an entire moving carton actually.

(Friday) From JamieM - 30k Bearers of the Word (beakies!) (180 points)

For this post, it's a slight change of tack..... 30k still, but the start of my second legion. Because when I start collecting something new, one army isn't ever enough despite what I promise myself when I start out!

As to the "history" of the legions, The Wordbearers are baddies. Deluded, but still baddies. You see, when the Emperor pushed into the stars on the grand reconquest of worlds lost, he created 20 space marine legions to help make that happen and each legion had a Primarch to lead it, a super human being. Each Primarch was different, growing up on different worlds and being shaped by their experiences and then further shaping their legions in their image.

Lorgar, the Primarch of the Wordbearers, grew up on a religious world and hence his legion became one full of religious zealots, who venerated the Emperor as a deity. Now, the Emperor didn't like this much as he claimed there were no gods (especially not him) and so he heavily chastised the legion. This led them to turn to the Chaos gods and drag down the other traitor legions with them. So this lot essentially started the Horus Heresy......

Anyway, onto the figures! First up, 20 marines in the mark VI "beaky" armour

I've always loved beaky armour, ever since I owned the RTB01 plastic box set of marines produced by GW in the 80's. I never thought I'd be able to get this many of them again (GW doesn't produce a unit of them outside forgeworld, instead choosing to scatter parts of the armour around other boxed sets, in line with their often baffling approach to customer service) but then I was given this:

Have you ever had a box like this given to you from a family member or friend because they know you're the wargamer of the family? Badly stuck together and horribly painted figures that someone used for a while and then got bored of? Well, within this box of "delights" were nearly enough legs to make 20 Mk VI armours. A few purchases from bits sellers of helmets and the use of the iconic left studded shoulder pad from betrayal at Calth and I was away!

A fair bit of religious iconography, with hand painted scrolls and decals applied direct to armour of favoured writings.

Next up, 2 sets of support marines in Mark V armour. The box comes with heavy bolters, but I've never liked that weapon, so a quick barrel swap later and I have a unit of 5 autocannons:

The scale doesn't really show the religious writing too well, so here are some selected closer shots:

Mostly on lower legs and vambraces as that's where they fitted best!

Finally for this fun little group of nutters, 2 contemptor class dreadnoughts:

I liked the one in the box so much that I procured another one on eBay!

This allowed me to convert the weapons on one to give him double assault cannons and have him pointing them off centre. The conversion opportunities are much reduced compared to the resin ones I did for the salamanders, but the reduced cost more than makes up for it!

Double assault cannon chap also got a head swap as I could see the legion re-modelling the head to look like a daemon and the other got a torso twist to add a little dynamism.

More 30k goodness! With "beakie" Marines to boot! Fantastic stuff.  As a fan of the "Horus for Hope" movement, I am of course very pleased to see these enlightened soldiers of faith, who had the courage to embrace change and reject the dictatorship of the so-called "Emperor". The story of the models themselves - rejected and found - matches the story of the Legion nicely.  Those "hey, are you into this junk" (which turns out to be treasure) moments are rare, but they are fun. 

Solid brush work again Jamie, and the religious touches are quite nice, fitting the back story of Word Bearers very well.  And once again your dreadnoughts have a menacing look to them that is quite appealing. I also love the conversions of the autocannons...I was not able to get my own autocannon guys assembled properly, and seeing what you did here will definitely have me copying that...
