From RayR - Nature - Moooo!, Highland Cows 50pts

 

For my last post in the Challenge Library my I present some Highland Cows.

Nature: The great outdoors, or perhaps underground. Maybe outer space!

Definitely the great outdoors, not so much underground or outer space??

These fine specimens all the way from the Highlands of Scotland are brought to you from those great chaps and chapesses at Iron Gate Scenery.

They're a fairly new company, and have featured in many of my posts over the last few years.

If you haven't checked them out before, please do so, you won't regret it.

Two of the cattle are from a different company called Disain Studio, but I couldn't find a link to their site?

As you can see they were an easy paintjob, only 3 colours!

From RayR: Spanish style Fountain for Santo Domingo [Art] (35 points)

 

The country now known as Haiti was once called Hispaniola by the Spanish who discovered the island in 1492. The French had a colony on the eastern side of the island, they called it, Saint-Domingue, the Spanish called it Santo Domingo and the English Saint Domingo.

In Cap-Francis, the capital of Saint-Domingue, a fountain was built to honour the namesake of the colony St Dominic. It was built in the 1720 by the renowned French sculptor and painter Ramon Mentuer Pantalon de Feu. It took just over a year to construct, and as it neared completion, Ramon succumbed to a yellow fever that also took his wife and 6 French art students and labourers who accompanied him to Saint-Domingue from his studio in Mensonges,a suburb of Paris. The four un-named students who survived finished the work of the fountain.

The statue was damaged by a runaway donkey and cart in the late 1780, when St Dominic's pointing arm was broken off, I have chosen to keep the arm in place and not snap it off, for art's sake!!

The statue and fountain can still be found in Cap-Francis, or rather Port Royal as it is known today.

The fountain is from Tablescape in the UK. I bought it at the Cavalier wargames show in February.

I'd been eyeing it up for a couple of years and finally took the plunge. John the owner explained that the centre plinth was left open so any gamer could put any statue they wanted on top.

I chose a Monk, from Iron Gate Scenery, to use as a St Dominic substitute, I think it works rather well?

I did put some Woodland Scenery water effect, into the fountain, but it hasn't shown up in any of the photo's at all, I guess I should have added a little blue paint to the mix?

Well I'd say Ramon's fountain fits perfectly into the art bonus round??

As for the points, 5 for St Dominic and 20 for the bonus and whatever today Minion decides to give me for the fountain? it measures 4x4 inch with a height of just under 3 inches, not including the figure.

Ah, I would almost say that it is just like you to come up with a difficult minioning task at the last moment, master Ray. However, I guess you're lucky to find the Junior Assistant Librarian, who is in a fine mood on a beautiful spring day. Yes, the fountain fits nicely in the Art theme and shall we say half a cube or 10 points for it? I love the background to the story (especially the traffic accident) and I must say that you have chosen well for your Saint Dominic stature, even if it still has its arm. No doubt it is due to the influence of the venerable holy man that the water is so completely clear! Well, there you have it, 35 points for you. Well done!

From RayR: Famous Person/Statue - El Cid 25mm (35 points)

 

For this post I'm dipping my toes into Section 2 of the Challenge Library and landing on........

Famous Person: The plaque says it all.

I searched through my unloved leadpile to see what I could use for a statue and found a few suitable figures, but needed some kind of plinth. Then at Cavalier last Sunday I saw some for sale from Iron Gate Studios, a swift purchase was made! 

Irongate also sell a range of  very nice looking figures El Cid and the Reconquista. So another purchase was made, and the unloved figures from my pile of shame were put back in the box! 

If you're gonna paint of figures for the Reconquista, why not go straight to the man of the hour Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, himself!! Of course otherwise known as El Cid.

TeemuL: Excellent statue, Ray! I really like the patina effect you achieved on the statue. I agree your definitions on the points, they are definitely correct. I think I'll give you 5 points more for the plinth and the very nice effect (including the hand painted shield). I have been quite strict with bonus points this Challenge, so I have plenty of them left. :)

From RayR: 25mm Odds n Sods (22 points)

 

My last post of the day and its just a small post, these figures were painted up early in the Challenge but not posted.

This poor chap comes from Iron Gate Scenery and can be purchased for the princely sum of £4.50!

Its a made from PLC, whatever that is?

The poor chap sitting inside the Torture Cage has definitely seen better days.

Looks like he's been in there for a while?

The Doc, he was originally painted up to be my Doctor figure, for Planet Skaro in the bonus round, but I changed my mind and painted the French Scientists instead.

He is actual a Pirate Doctor from Foundry

He shall probably vanish into my civilian box of doom.

 A nice little collection to round out your Challenge this year Ray. Despite the fact you neglected to put your name in the title I recognised your style even before I checked the post labels.

The pirate doctor is very cool and I like your colour choices but the skeleton in a cage is the pick of the bunch for me. I've scored him/her as two x 25mm miniatures bringing the total for your final post to 22 points. Well done mate and thanks for sharing your work with us once again.

From RayR - Cybertron/Transformational - Blacksmith's Forge (25 Points)

 

For my visit to Cybertron, I thought Transformational part would fit perfect for this wonderful piece of kit. A Blacksmith's forge that would transform base metal into weapons and other items a little less useful for a wargamer.

Once again its from those very clever chaps at Iron Gate Scenery, who really do make some great items for wargaming. This kit can be purchased for the modest sum of £14.

Its an all plastic and resin kit, which fits together very easily. The base is from Warbases and is left over from the stack I bought to make jungle terrain a few Challenges ago.

Its probably more based on the medieval period, but hey ho, I think this fits for the Donnybrook period spot on.

And of course you need a Blacksmith, I can't remember where this chap comes from, sorry?

But with that stylish tache, who cares!

And here's his Dad, who's a Redoubt figures, from I think their AWI range?

He's working very hard, poor chap.

There's a hole under the fire pit, for a tea light, so it looks like the flames are flickering. 

I did take a 5 second film. but can't get the bugger to work!!!

I hate working out how much buildings are worth, its 4 x 3 x 2 inches, so I'd hazard a guess at 5pts??

Well Ray, bless you, we have some more excellent work here - fitting for Donnybrook (and surely other rules) so nicely! As ever the brushwork is very well done. The light in the firepit looks great too, I can even feel some heat from that fire. Since it is -21 C outside, this is appreciated. I should note in general I have a lot of respect for people who find the motivation to paint terrain, since I am a total laggard in that department...

 

But...

 

For Cyberton...a blacksmith??? I'm sorry my friend, accepting that would cause The Challenge XII Quadrant to evaporate in an event horizon of strained molecular interpretation rendering all of us to particles in an instant. Not even Paul SS would be able to whip of a spaceship in time to save us...so I must decline any location bonus points for Cybertron on this submission.

 

As a consolation, I will award some bonus points for painting terrain. Painting terrain. Ugh. 25 points all in (two 25mm figures, the horse, and points for the terrain, and the emotional trauma of knowing you are painting terrain instead of figures).

From RayR - Caprica/Doomed Prisoner Wagon & Sarah's Star Yacht (90 points)

My 3rd post of the day!!! Sorry Greg! Not quite sure what's wrong with my posts?

My first stop is Caprica where I will invoke those who are Doomed. I was going to paint this Prison wagon up for the Challenge anyway so it was pretty handy that it fitted into Caprica/Doomed perfectly.

My prisoner wagon contains 3 Rebel traitors being driven to their doom, just after the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685.

The Wagon is from the very clever lads & lasses from Iron Gate Scenery and was a snip at £8!

It is more of a medieval model, so I changed the wheels to look more 17th/18th century which worked well. Check them out if you haven't already, they make some brilliant terrain pieces. I do have a few more bits from them for later in the Challenge.

I did also buy the figures to go with the wagon, but chose to buy another pack from Col Bill, c17th century Prisoners and guard. The three prisoner figures fit well into the wagon as my prisoners. The 2 drivers I believe are both also from Col Bill's Depot Battalion.

After lounging around on Caprica I decided to jump back on Sarah's Star Yacht, with our destination being the wonderful planet Skaro. As payment for my trip I offer up Cate Cramer a c18th century US settler, I'm sure Cate will fit in with my other civilians for King Philips War.

Cate is another of Col Bills, Belt Fed Gaming Novelty Girls and like  Becky Burton in my previous post is a snip at £3.35.

Well done Ray - not only is the painting fine, but I did not have to sort out the alignment of the text in your post. BRILLIANT. 

 

Now, to the painting - all the bushwork is very nice, of course, but that prisoner wagon...that is so damn cool! I can imagine it being great for all sorts of gaming scenarios. Very nice stuff.
