From PeterA: (Little) Big Stompy Robots of Death! (27 points)

For my first post as part of the Sunday Crew I present three 15mm Dreadnaughts for the Horus Heresy. All are upscaled 3d prints from their original Epic scale (somewhere between 6-8mm I believe) and are part of my expanding collection for gaming the Horus Heresy in 15mm. In last year's Challenge I entered some Death Guard and Imperial Fists, so here are some more Loyalists in the form of a Space Wolves Contemptor and Leviathan Dreadnaught, and a Traitor Leviathan from the World Eaters.

First up, the Space Wolves Contemptor. I tried to bring out some of the detail using oil paints and thinners to apply a pin wash, not something I have done before. more practice will help, but it was relatively straightforward and I am quite pleased with the results, much more restrained and subtle than an acrylic wash. I used a few of the smallest decals from the GW Space Wolves Legion transfer sheet (intended for their full size models) to add a bit of colour, and there is also some sponged on battle damage. There are also a couple of Varagyr Terminators (3d prints again) for an idea of scale.

Joining the Contemptor is a Leviathan Dreadnaught - unfortunately I dropped him during painting and he lost one of the claws on his power fist, which promptly disappeared into the carpet's Bermuda Triangle-like vortex. As before, pin wash to try and bring out the details, some decals for bling and more Terminators for scale. As he is a big boy, he also has a hero rock (actually bark for garden use) which he takes with him everywhere!

And here they are together - I do love the insane size of the Levithan, as well as the four barrelled cannon for administering the Emperor's mercy!

Speaking of insane, here is a World Eaters' Leviathan. In the setting, these are meant to be siege Dreadnaughts, designed for tearing down/through fortifications and any soft squishy things inside them. However, the World Eaters are blood-thirsty, berserk maniacs, whose primary (only, really) tactic is to charge headlong into the enemy and hit them in the face. So clearly this Dreadnaught doesn't have the patience for siege warfare and is carrying out research on what a siege drill designed for burrowing through metres-thick walls can achieve in close combat. Either that, or it is simply running at the afore-mentioned wall to see if it can run through it.

Again, I have tried a pin wash, mostly on the blue and metallic parts. I don't have any decals for the World Eaters, so the Dreadnaught has had to make do with liberal use of the blood effect paint from GW to mark him out as a World Eater.

One last pic of all three together:

Points wise:

3x 15mm Dreadnaughts = 24 points

3x (little) Big Stompy Robots of Death = 3 side duel points

Total = 27 points (not sure if the Side Duel points get added to the total so will defer to the Almighty Sunday Minion! - the duels wallah should sort that - your post is tagged suitably )

From DaveD. Welcome into the fray Peter. Big Stompy Robots are always a joy to see .the hero rock sounds like a good idea . Oil washes are always a great way of working once you are used to them I feel . Well done on trying it .So I will round you upto 27pts .

From KyleC: Future Blood Takers.. SciFi (88 pts)

Got a 'small' post for today... get it.. no? well.. ok then..

So a quick shift in painting due to being offered a game of the new Legion Imperialis (LI) next week.. and the new book just got released the other week, so rules for some faster unit types are now available..

And with a few printing commissions being asked, I fired up the farm and pushed out a 'few' units to paint up for myself.

2 units of 6 bases worth of Sky-hunters. I printed the plasma ones thinking they might be as good as they are in the 28mm version of Horus Heresy... but seems that they do not get that option ( yet ) in LI. So my plan on how to use them is gone, and will be put to clearing paths of infantry as/where they can.

But I suspect being quick, and having range for shooting at infantry, they will still be fun to play around with.

Then we have 2 units of Outriders. I printed these with bolters, and guess what? They can have plasma! So that is all messed up there and now I guess I have 4 units worth of infantry clearing forces to play with. Also very quick, and fun to paint up.

Both types of units were painted in World Eater colors to give myself something different to paint up. Their legion rule gives a dice reroll in combat.. so let's see if that is something that I will use. Not the best combo I know, but still something different to try in the games.

And then these guys... 8 bases worth of terminators.. printed and painted up to be red butchers, even though there are no rules set out for them..  but they are to be used in combat so hopefully the threat of the Red Butchers will give them some bonuses.

I have kept the bases similar to that of the Death Guard so that they do match a bit, and can be allies/enemies depending..

Also putting this for the SciFi section in the library..

Points wise..

40 8mm Infantry - 20 pts
48 8mm Cavalry - 48 pts
SciFi Section - 20 pts

Total - 88 pts

Nice to see some Legions Imperialis love happening here Kyle, I wouldn't worry too much about the weapons loadouts you modeled, these things are small enough that anything can be anything, within reason. The bikes are cool but the Red Butchers look absolutely fantastic, great work on the whole lot.

88 points for you!

From MikeF - World Eaters Assault Squad - 50 points

For my final post I finished a 10 man World Eaters Assault Squad for 30k. I couldn't figure out how to shoe horn this unit into a planet, so they'll have to stand on their own merit.

I'm fairly happy with my productivity this challenge, considering I had to scale back my hobby time this winter. This unit will put me over 500 points. It's short of my 600 point goal, but not by too much. I'm also happy that I was able to complete some models that have been sitting around for a long time. Always good to chisel away at the pile of shame.

Thanks to Curt and the Minions for their work making this challenge possible and congrats to all the challenge participants on their work. I wasn't able to comment much, but I've been amazed by the assortment of models you've all completed.

See you next year.

Great looking squad of jetpack fanatics, Mike. I always like seeing these versions of the Heretics before they got all silly and morphed out of recognition. Hmm, maybe we'll get to see them at PrairieCon this May? I hope so.

Thanks for joining in again this year, Mike. We'll catch up soon I'm sure.

From MikeF - World Eaters Contemptor Dreadnought - Cybertron - 40 points

This week I'm backtracking to the Great Abyssal and moving to Cybertron. For the planet I completed a World Eaters Legion Contemptor Dreadnought from Forgeworld. Contemptor dreadnoughts are basically robots, except they have the remains of a space marine floating inside controlling them. There's no coming out after you've been installed so you basically become the operating system. This dreadnought is armed with a heavy flamer and assault cannon.

28mm vehicle + Cybertron = 40 points

Thanks for visiting.

From DaveD

Now does a marine get any actual choice in that installation I wonder!

From MikeF - World Eater Terminators and Imperial Assassins - Klendathu - Great Abyssal - Terra - Lune - Xanth - Mars (145 points)

I missed the last couple Fridays due to my work schedule, but I was able to paint up a few things. I'll also try to shamelessly mine various planets for some much needed points.

First up is a squad of World Eater Terminators in Cataphractii armor for Horus Heresy. These have shoulder pads from Pop Goes the Monkey and they fit on as one piece. They work really well on the GW kit and they make similar pads for any marine chapter you can think of.

These guys will be invading Klendathu, for an invasion gone bad. In the fluff, Terminators are written as unstoppable killing machines who drop into the midst of the enemy either by transport or teleporting. They then manage to kill everything with few to no losses. For most editions of Warhammer 40k, Terminator squads routinely failed to live up to their reputation, often dying without making their points back. Keeping in line with this theme, these Terminators will boldly teleport onto Klendathu at which point they will realize they were the victims of a deceitful marketing campaign by GW and die horribly!

The World Eaters badge is integrated into the shoulder pads.

Next I'm taking the Great Abyssal to Terra, home of the Vindicare Assassin Temple. Imperial Assassins come in several forms and do different things on the battlefield. All their temples are on Terra, Throne world of the Imperium in 40K. This one is obviously a sniper and was probably the most useful in the game. I've had this model for close to 25 years and this was probably it's second or third paint job. That's some heavy lifting!

Lune will be represented by the Culexus Assassin. These specialize in hunting and eliminating psykers and other practitioners of witchcraft. I've had this model about as long as the Vindicare, but never managed to paint him. He was just far too specialized to be of use in a game.

Xanth requires a unique talent. The Callidus Assassin certainly has one. They can shapeshift thanks to an assortment of crazy drugs, allowing them to slip into the enemy HQ, issue some ill conceived orders and then eliminate the HQ with their sword which phases in and out of reality. This model was a recent purchase from Ebay and was missing the end of her pony tail which I had to replace with greenstuff.

Finally comes Mars, the God of War. The final Imperial Assassin is the Eversor. There's nothing subtle about this guy and he likely won't survive the mission. He's for when you absolutely have to kill an entire bunker full of people. He's loaded with combat drugs and armed with his bolter/needle gun combo, his Neuro Gauntlet and power sword. Once he finally is killed, the chemicals in his blood become unstable and react explosively, killing anyone who managed to survive up to that point. He was also a recent Ebay purchase and I only had to replace the barrel of the needle gun.

For points that should be 9x 28mm models for 45 points + 100 points for 5 planets = 145

Thanks for reading!

Your Friday Minion is a bit tied up today, and has asked some of us to pitch in while he is away. I thought I would step in between work demands this morning to start with this submission, not only because Mike is a friend, but because his shameless strip-mining of bonus points would fit right in with the scrapers who otherwise appear on Wednesdays...

Very nice work here Mike, as always. Yes, the Terminators are quite useless in the game (although, I must say, the problem is not so pronounced in 30k in my experience) but they just look so darn cool and ominous. These fellows really look the part, and I really like the embossed Legion emblem on their heavy-duty shoulder plating.

The collection of classic assassin figures is great, and that is some very nice work with the greenstuff. These old models are classics - it is a shame the newer versions of these figures come with such absurd/overwrought/unworkable scenery-diorama-style bases. But who needs those, when you have the classics available - and ones that have been waiting for years and years for some paint.

145 points for you...for nine figures...not quite Wednesday-level squeezing, but you are on your way...

From MikeF - World Eaters Deredeo Dreadnought - Glorantha - 40 points

Next up on the World Eaters invasion tour is Glorantha. This is a place of Heroes...apparently. I think earlier Challengers have already used the dreadnought angle for this planet, but luckily there are no points awarded for originality.

Space Marines really love war! Unfortunately death can really get in the way of that. Luckily, the most "Heroic" members of a chapter who are suffering mortal wounds from battle can be "rewarded" with entombment inside a Dreadnought, allowing them to fight on for all eternity. The Horus Heresy space marine legions have numerous types of dreadnought. The version I painted up is the Deredeo Speedboat Dreadnought! It's pretty goofy looking, but you can't argue with the ridiculous number of weapon on it. It's obviously a long range unit, which doesn't traditionally match the berserk World Eaters. My rational is that this is 30k and the World Eaters are not full on psychopaths yet. They're a legion who subjugate planets using the full spectrum of weaponry and tactics available to them. They just love chopping things up with swords and axes a little bit more than most!

The white is painted with Vallejo ghost grey with a Nuln oil recess shade and Vallejo dead white highlight. The blue is painted with GW Macragge blue followed by Altdorf Guard blue. I gave it a recess shade of Drakenhof Nightshade and a highlight of Calgar blue. The Altdorf allows the transfers to contrast a bit better than the Macragge.

28mm vehicle - 20 + 20 for the planet = 40 points

Thanks for visiting.

From DaveD

That's a fine entry with massive guns! 40 points it is!
