From JP - More 28mm Pathans (50 Points)

As I slowly chew through my collection, I now have 100+ foot Pathans painted and maybe 80 to go...

These are Foundry again, I just can't get enough of these.

I go for a very campaign look. All colours are a bit washed out and dirty, I use a lot of greys, browns, faded blues with a few exceptions and some highlights on turbans and sashes. 

Points:

10 x 28mm        = 50 points

Maybe a break into fantasy or my Early Germanics next... who knows?

UPDATE - Apologies JP - I forgot to add my comments - not that they are all that valuable, or valuable at all, but still - bad form on my part!

Great work on these warriors - your "campaign look" is spot on, and know that I will be trying to copy some of this look when it comes time to paint the next batch of tribal warriors in my own project for this setting. In particular, I would love to hear more about how you approach painting the skin tones for the Pathans - maybe you can share next time?

And as my friend Dallas has some "Early Germanics" under way himself, if you would be great to see more of those too!

From JP - From Highland to Lowland (75 Points)

So, I finished the last 6 Gordons for the Northwest Frontier, they were a bit easier as I focused on the feel rather than detail for the tartans. Thank you all for the advice, mucho appreciated.

If you're wondering why I painted 11 Gordons, it's because the piper will be purloined to accompany the army CinC.

As I sat there getting ready to paint Pathans next, my sights fell on a wooden box holding STL resin figures, a gift from my son-in-law at Christmas for my Border Reiver project. They are  by Flags of War and though I prefer metals, the temptation to assemble some of these was stronger than my willpower could resist... so many options to create with these fellows!

So... from Pathans to Borderers... hmmm

Points - trying to get this one right...

10 x 28mm figures    50 points

New Acquisitions      20 points

Total                          70 points

So, that's about it for now!

More NWF goodness, wearing kilts, no less! Excellent brushwork here once more JP. Reading your submission, I am certain many Challengers will a) appreciate the brushwork on those fantastic highlanders, and b) sympathize with your stated preference for metal figures, even as the 3D printed options continue to improve by leaps and bounds and c) recognize that "squirrel" feeling of suddenly hopping to another project!


You absolutely nailed the scoring, but I will arbitrarily add five bonus points because I love highlanders, and you should have some extra pay-off after the Tartan Torture getting that lot finished.

From JP: Carry On Up The Khyber (55 points)

Firstly, note to self... do not, do not ... try to learn how to paint kilts in any scale during the Analogue Painting Challenge. Four attempts and a very frustrating time... mind you, I remember a scene from Carry On Up The Khyber where the regiment defeats a howling charge with a deft maneuvre ... that might have been easier to paint... nah, would be unpublishable...

The figurines are Foundry 25mm Northwest Frontier and the Lady Sarah is an Artizan 28mm NWF character - great strappin' lass even next to Artizan figs...  There are another 6 kilties to come, if my eyes can survive it, as the figurines are for The Sword And The Flame, reduced unit size games.

Without further ado:

So, for points:

Six 25-28mm figs:        60 points

Historical:                     20 points

Lady Sarah:                  20 points

Total:                            100 points

And now for a blast from the past. This is my last bottle of The Armory paint bought in 1986... still kicking, just. These and Ral Partha were the best I ever encountered, even if I am a big fan of Foundry paints.

And yes - that's the other damned Scotsmen peeking from behind...

Happy New Year to you as well JP - thanks for this tremendous submission. A great number of Challenge participants bear the psychological scars of attempting to paint kilts and other similar bizarre cultural objects bearing the so-called "tartan" - the hobby suffering is tremendous, but the results look great in the end, and your efforts here are no exception. Great work on these fantastic Highlanders, they enhance every table on which they appear!

In terms of points, a slight adjustment for you. Painted 28mm figures (even ones who torture you with tartan) are worth five points each. The Lady Sarah figure (which is wonderful) does not, in itself, get you bonus points unless you are travelling somewhere else in the library on the cart. So for now, this will be worth the points of a 28mm painted figure (although, named Sarah, we know the true worth is one beyond mere "points"). So we have seven 28mm figures and one Challenge Bonus location, in all giving you 55 points. 

We look forward to that next round of Scotsmen on the painting table...
