From PeteF: Wild West Werewolf (27 points) [Westerns]

One of the games I play infrequently is Dracula's America - it's a great little skirmish game that unfortunately didn't attain sufficient popularity to see a continuous stream of supplements and figures.  North Star's line of figures is solid - although this particular monster is a 3D print.  This is my entry for the Westerns studio as Dracula's America is set in the Wild West. 

Rather than use speed paints/contrasts on this one I went with layering and one of my favourite recipes for fur (Field Drab/Khaki/Deck Tan).  The photos don't do the fur justice - it looks better irl. Honest! 

I like the 3D sculpt - which also came with a nice 3D printed base.

The base included a SKULL! So this gets me on the board for the skull challenge - I'm hoping to get some squirrels on the board but keeping getting distracted by projects too small to count.

If this werewolf was standing up it would be somewhere around 40-50mm foot to eye so I'm counting it as 1 40mm foot for 7 points + 20 points for a studio for a total of 27 points.

Lovely brushwork Pete! Yes, yes, your fur is excellent (it's nice not to fall back on Contrast all the time, eh), but I was also taken by his eyes and teeth - fabulous work there. I've not heard of 'Dracula's America', but I'm definitely going to check it out based on your recommendation.

From PeteF: Skinwalkers Wolf and Bear for The Lair (30 points)

 

In Dracula's America, a skirmish/scuffle with around 10 figures per side, the Skinwalkers faction has two members who can transform themselves into beasts. This wolf and bear complete my first Dracula's America faction - one of my wargaming band has all the terrain we need so, as soon as lock down ends we'll be able test this game. If we enjoy it I like the look of The Dark Confederacy as my next faction.

I got the fur colour recipes from the excellent Painting War: Dark Ages book/magazine. Left to my own devices I would never have come up with khaki(mixed with black) for wolfskin. I like the way it turned out - but still have a lot to learn about painting fur. The horned head on the base was left over from some old GW skellies - gives it a plains feel. Next time I do a plains base I'll try and make some tumbleweed.

The beasties are a little larger than 28mm horses so I'll count them as 5 points each plus 20 for the room.

The Arcanist (Shaman)

My local band of wargaming brothers plays a lot of different games - SAGA (various flavours), Beyond the Gates of Antares, Kings of War, Bolt Action, Zona Alpha, Monster Apocalypse, Rampant various, Battle Tech, Black Powder (if I'm running something) and anything else that anyone fancies. One of the rulesets we started looking at is Dracula's America - a skirmish/scuffle with small warbands of around ten minis.

It takes place in an alternate post civil war universe with several fun factions - including a risen south with confederate zombies, paladin gunfighters, vampires and the skinwalkers - native americans with some shape shifting abilities.

These skinwalkers are a mixture of North Star Miniatures official  warband and Warlord Games Comanches. I traded them for a box of Frostgrave Gnolls in an unusual thinning of the shelf of shame. I had instant regret about the gnolls which were going to be a Kings of War unit -  Frostgrave might be fun...

For the shrine the war band includes an arcanist - who is a sort of shaman as well as this guy with the horns, fur and warpaint that kinda sorta reminds me of a shaman who's been in the news lately.

The group took ages to paint and base - I'm more used to batch painting and the members of this warband wanted to be painted individually. It was my first attempt at native american skin - still need to work on the fleshtones - there's a P3 colour that lots of Youtubers recommend for nonwhite tones. I'm behind plan for dungeon exploration so might need to hitch a ride with a witch to get to the next level.
