From AndrewB - War of the Roses! (175 points)

Back with a delayed post!   Life got in the way of the hobby for a bit, but I managed to squeak out some final points before the end!   A couple gaming buddies have been painting up figures for Hail Caesar, following how Seventh Son bases his minis, so I tossed in a couple units of Men at Arms, as well as an alternative command base!  

The two units are loyal to Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury.  In the event they need to represent someone else, I can swap out the central command base for the more generic one!  The flowers on the base are white, so players can tell right away on the tabletop these are Yorkists.  

There’s 35 28mm figures, which should be 175pts.   Not the strongest ending, but it’s something!  Here’s to hoping for next year staying life-free for the challenge, we’ll break 2,000!

I must apologize once again for my cranial density (indeed, I must do so daily, it would seem), but who is the "Seventh Son", and what is it about his basing that attracted you to it? Is it odd or different somehow? I would love to know more!

Regardless, this lot of armoured crazies ready to whack people in the context of a conflict that I will never understand - but absolutely looks super cool - should fit right in! They look great Andrew. And while life may have been in the way, the main bit is that it continues, and you got some hobby stuff done in the face of whatever obstacles it has thrown your way.

From MikeW: 28mm WoR, Specialist 40k Grechin and More (145 Points)

Last week's posting was a bit of a rushed job, painting 60 odd figures didn't leave me time for much else and I got to Wednesday evening thinking I still have to put a posting together! This week I'm starting early and although I'm not doing so many figures now that I have reached my target - hopefully the variety will continue to interest people...

... This week and next I have to travel for work so my postings will be somewhat limited, so I will post what I can for this Thursday and see what I can do in time for next Thursday before hopefully resuming normal output

Today, I have just completed a number of generic War of Roses figures, 5 x Mounted, plus 12 x Foot. The Mounted figures are all Officer / Character types, whilst the foot are three armoured guy with a poleaxe, spear and warhammer plus a number of figures to be used as markers' such as Heralds and Standard Bearers.

As a quick interlude, I also completed a Viking Jarl figure! The figure was acquired from eBay and came undercoated but missing his axe, which I was able to quickly add this back from the spares box. See below..

This little guy came with a base that had already had and and small rocks added to it and then undercoated, not what I usually do. So I adapted and having given the base a brown wash I then dry brushed it with 'Desert Sand' to give a nice finish before then adding electrostatic grass - a little different to my usual method but the figure looks fine with other figures in the collection.

Next up are six 40k Grechin, now I know I said that I'd completed my last batch, last week but the extra figures I'll be doing now are to add flavour to the army and  or to provide some mechanical support! Included in this group is the main man - 'Red Robbo', the rebellious Grot who heads-up the whole army!

I have also included three classic Grechin / Grots from the first ever 40K boxed set era, again these have been given the 'Red Star' treatment and have hopefully been integrated into the army as a whole, these are Robbo's personal bodyguard.

In addition there are two Grechin Mechaniks, both old metal figures from eth spares box, one with a large spanner, the other with a remote control unit. I'm planning to create a Grechin Drone - made form an old Orc Killa Kopta dating back to the 90s.

Finally we have Red Robbo himself, in a black greatcoat, lined red, carrying a Hand Blasta and a skull busting mace. This is another venerable metal figure that I have had kicking around my spares box for what has to be 20+ years...

From TeemuL: Work related travels are generally not good for painting, I'm away for the whole next week. But you have still managed to create a reasonable output, both in quantity and quality. The Red Gobbo is a great model and you have painted him well. But I'd say the Jarl is my favourite here, a fine looking warrior.

From LeeH: The Duke of Norfolks Battle at Bosworth (119 points)

The first half of this week's entry missed the posting deadline last week by just a few hours. I hadn’t quite sorted the flags out and didn’t want to rush the job, so I reluctantly decided to delay posting by a week. On the plus side, it means you get a double helping of 6mm War of the Roses this week!

With Richard II’s independent command of mounted knights completed it's now time to move on to the main fighting contingent of his army. Sir John Howard, the Duke of Norfolk commanded the Vanguard and was in the thick of the fighting right up until he was killed. The loss of the commander would probably have been fatal in armies with better command and control, but in the press of men, how many would realise their leader had fallen? As with other commanders I have based the Duke of Norfolk on his own base with a Standard Bearer. He also brings some foot knights/Men at Arms and Archers to the fight clad in his livery.

Accompanying the Duke in this week's submission is his son, Sir Thomas Howard, the Earl of Surrey. He commands a company of Retinue/Billmen and a company of Archers. Thomas was wounded at Bosworth and imprisoned in the Tower of London for three years. However, he was released in 1489, and his title of Earl of Surrey was restored. He appears to have been loyal to Henry VII and in 1487 was sent north to put down a rebellion in Yorkshire. He remained Henry's lieutenant until 1489 when he accompanied the king to France. In 1501 he was made Lord High Treasurer, effectively entering Henry’s inner circle. He remained loyal to Henry’s son, Henry VIII, and enjoyed significant military success in the king's service in Scotland well into what would be considered extreme old age by the standards of the day.

After falling a little behind last week, this week I have caught up and got quite a bit done. So today I have the infantry of the Earl of Shrewsbury and Lord Zouch, plus three artillery bases and two hand gunner companies. So the next set of troops belongs to Sir George Talbot, the Eldest son of John Talbot, 3rd of Shrewsbury. He was Knight of the Bath to Richard III and fight with him at Bosworth, where he was captured. However, he must have been able to retain favor and switched sides as he fought with Henry VII at the Battle of Stoke Field two years later.

Sir John de la Zouch, Lord Zouch was a Yorkist nobleman and politician loyal to Richard III, under whose command he fought at the Battle of Bosworth. He had grown in political power under Richard, mainly because his family's influence in Northamptonshire was of value to the King. Defeat at Bosworth resulted in him suffering attainder and forfeiture of his property, but he was eventually restored to royal favor in the Tudor court, due partly to a marriage connection to the new King's mother.

There are three Artillery pieces. These were typically companies - mercenaries in effect - who were paid to ply their expertise for one side or another. 

Lastly, I have two small skirmish companies of Handgunners. Again these are dangerous weapons, relatively new to the battlefield and, at close range, quite deadly. Sharp-eyed viewers will notice there are fewer figures on these bases than the hand gunners I did for the Lancastrians. There’s no cunning research behind this, I just didn’t have enough figures to put 8 on a base as before! That being said, the Test of Resolve rules are figure agnostic, so a bit of variation is fine so long as the bases remain the same size.

That's a big chunk of the Yorkist army completed and next week I will start on the troops commanded by Sir Robert Brackenbury.

So another year passes and we all meet up here once again.. And like all the regulars I am always in excitement of this time to get some serious hobby time in. Or at least that is the plan.. which has not gone down well over the past few years. Between moving, illness, and work.. things like life keep getting in the way. 

Though this year I do hope it is much different as I have begun to do much more painting in prep for the event, and also aligning my space to flow better for it. 

Behold.. my claustrophobic sized office space that encompasses everything one needs for a work/hobby division.

In the past I did have space upstairs that was more dedicated for painting and hobby. However I seemed to rarely use it as work made it nearly impossible to get away from the computer. And with the inclusion of my partners family from Ukraine now residing with us, I spent a bit of this year redesigning my office to hold more items than it probably should be. But it has seen an increase of painting as I tend to not leave the office now, and can paint in-between calls or before/after work without feeling guilty that I am not available for work. 

With my main work computer set up in front of me, and drawers filled with paints, materials, and models.. I have everything within arms reach ( including a drink fridge, and Mince Pies ) to keep me going.

Plan this year is to get through a few of my armies that I have built over the past years and not got around to painting. More just moving from box or display case as we update or move house. 

Some of the bigger ones would be my War of the Roses army, Roman forces, and Dacians. Those being some of the more pressing ones I wouldn't mind getting completed this year.

Couple other ongoing projects would be my Deathguard Horus Heresy forces. Although much is done with it over the summer, I have a lot of support vehicles and units to finish off with it. Including a few more units that are being finished up with printing that should prove to be quite a bit of fun. Quick shot to show where I got up to in August before working on a few other projects.

Also have the Cursed City boxset to finish that I will be following Marco's youtube tutorials for to get them done quickly ( airbrush and oils to be used heavily there ). The skeles got finishes, as did the heroes, but the rest of the mobs still need doing. So I do look forward to getting them done, and then more games being had with them all on the table.

Some Orks need doing for a mate of mine that I have set aside for this as they are a bit easier and a good palette cleanser. 

I expect also a lot of random pieces at times. Star War Legions. Adeptus Titanicus. Age of Sigmar. Blood Bowl. Weird War 2 models. And likely whatever gets through the printer or makes me go Ooo that looks interesting. 

One of the biggest things for 2023 for me though is to get in more gaming. I have not had much time with it over the past years due to work and such, but looking to rectify that more this year. So a wide range of models, and armies will help me be ready for whatever game type one might want to play, and have it done in a bit of style. 

Looking through all the other setups, and hobby plans, this years is looking to be a right blast overall. Should be fun, and looking forward to it!

So first off, Apologies.. been a hectic couple of weeks here which has felt like months with the new lockdown.. and the mojo just hasn't been there. 

Secondly.. I really didn't believe I painted this much in a short period of time until I checked the time stamps of the units on my phone.. so.. yeah.. um.. anyways.. seems time in Lockdown moves at a strange rate! 

Gallery of Ancestors here and for that for me is to look back at English troops as our family originally originates from the Isles of which I presently reside. Although more Scottish and Irish, there is my father's grandmother who came from England directly. And actually lived not far from where I am now, and held the same surname as the town, Swindon! 

Now sadly the forces I am painting for my current army for War of the Roses ( using the Never Mind the Bill Hooks rule set ) is from Mortimer's Cross near Kingsland in Wales, but it isn't so far from Swindon so hopefully this works. Plus I painted them in Red and White.. so they also hold some Canadian colours there.. though not fully relevant.. 

This force is to represent Sir Walter Devereux of Bobenham as he fought alongside Sir Hastings and Sir Croft at the battle of Mortimer's Cross. Fighting for the York against the King at that time. 

I had started this force last year with Hastings Blue and Magenta coloured troops, and now fall into the Red/White of Devereux. The first unit up is his 24 Archers. Being lesser troops this time I didn't give them the full livery and made just their tunics in the main army colours there. 

Meanwhile the 24 Bill Hooks were given a bit more of the colors as they would have been at least able to afford the bill hooks, and thus the full uniform that Sir Devereux demands!

Of course the 24 Men at Arms in full armor are the powerhouse of the forces here. Ready to smash into any Lancaster that dares to take the crossroads here at Mortimer's Cross! Each viaing for their lords blessing and a cut of the spoils I am sure. 

And the elite 12 Pikemen. Rare in the war, and thus given full livery here to show that they can afford better things as well. Including more of them wearing better armor to protect them a bit further!

Last being the captains for Sir Devereux to help keep the troops moving as required. Haven't researched suitable names for them, but happy to take suggestions below? You can see Devereux in the background with his retainer feeling proud to see his troops in front of him ready to defend the crossroads before them. 

And then the 3 main commanders together that were painted as test schemes at the beginning of the fall last year, and a together shot of the army so far! Enough troops now to get 2 full armies together! So if I can get an opponent ( once lockdown ends, or Jr's computer fails to somehow turn on... ) then I can get in a game of this to see how it finally plays in person! 

Ignore the primed house for now.. it will get a splash of paint very soon as it was just recently printed!

All together though this is 7 units of 12 models making 84 troops at 420 pts. A mounted captain and 2 on foot for 20 pts. And the Gallery of Ancestors for 20 pts. Making a nice 460 pts for this collection.. not too shabby for 2 weeks of slogging through them! 

Now to paint some guardians to a hidden stash in Necromunda as a break from painting line troops!
