From AndrewG: More fantasy town guards and their adversaries (75 points)

 

In between historical figure painting I’ve continued to chip away at various skirmish projects including more town guards and their potential adversaries. This post has a bit of everything in that regard.

We begin with the first half of my second Guards of Traitor's Toll detachment. This patrol is painted in the livery of Lady Merron, but despite its simple appearance, for some reason this batch of figures caused me no end of headaches. The first three went fine, but when I had finished the last two, I realized I had accidentally reversed their livery quarters. Oh well, somewhere in Traitor’s Toll a clothing stores quartermaster is getting jacked up by their superior for choosing a dodgy lowest bidder.

I then decided I wanted to give my crossbowman a pavise shield, which I sourced from a plastic Perry miniatures set. The contours of the shield and back simply wouldn’t match and every time I glued it on, I’d come back a few minutes later to find it had fallen off. Time to use the “special” glue. Needless to say it'll never come off now, unlike the next guy.

 

Having sorted that out, I painted the guy with the torch. Of interest, this is the first time I’ve ever painted flames – I found a tutorial on the interwebs and followed it, and it seemed to come out nicely. Impressed with myself and feeling a false sense of security, while admiring my finished work I dropped the figure and his head snapped off and rolled away somewhere (still yet to be found). So, more repairs...

 

Having had enough of the guards, I flipped over to my Cult of the Double Scar dudes and finished off a leader and a necromancer, thinking that I could also use this growing warband for Frostgrave. Again, some very nice plastic sculpts from Northstar and easily kit bashed together from both the Cultists and Wizards sprues.

A lot of games need peasants or levy troops, so I put together a few of the Wargames Atlantic plastic medieval peasants from their Baron’s War line. Overall, they’re okay, but I’m not sure I like them all that much. The legs and torsos come separate, and the heads are not really universal to all the bodies, certain ones go best with certain torsos. Also, the weapons are oversized and can appear a bit goofy. Nevertheless, they’ll fit into skirmish games well enough.

Last but not least, I had this D&D plastic wolf/beast/dog that someone gave to me a while ago just sitting around on the workbench, so I decided to finish it off and add it to my slowly growing collection of Frostgrave adversaries. Nothing fancy, just a few overcoats and dry brushes of greys and some glowing blue eyes.

 

Thus, for this lot I’ll claim:

13x 28mm figures = 65 points

1x 28mm large animal = 10 points

Total: 75 points

I like these guys a lot Andrew.  Your town guard looms very much the part, but maybe avoid that tailor next time.  Your baddies are my faves however, especially the necromancer types.  Well done.

From GrahamB - Samurai and other Japanese and Medievals (230 points)

This week’s submission featuring my favourite brown Dulux paint is the start of my Sengoku period Samurai project.  I already have skirmish forces for Test of Honour - these new figures will be used for full tabletop battles with the Warlord Games' "Pike and Shotte: Samurai Wars" supplement. The first units are for an Ikko Ikki force including some of the peasants that will make up around half of the planned initial army.

The first unit is a unit of Warlord Games Ona-Bugeisha, female Samurai. In the game that could be used to represent peasants, Samurai or Ashigaru, depending on the army composition. They started with a white undercoat followed by speedpaints/contrast paints. For me the paint is not pigment heavy enough on its own so I dry brushed highlights with normal’ paint.

The next unit is some Ashigaru skirmishers, part of a job lot eBay purchase. I believe those to be from the veteran 25mm Dixon’s Miniatures range that in its day set the standard for Samurai. They are a little dated compared to more recent sculpts but paint up nicely. They are two to a base to represent skirmishers and are led by what I think is a Minifigs Samurai with Teppo.

Today’s third contingent comprises three units each of 3 bases of peasants armed with spears and various improvised weapons and farm tools. They will count as spearmen in Pike and Shotte. They are from assorted makers including Perry, AW Miniatures, 1st Corps and a few 3d prints from Wargames Atlantic. 

The 4th contingent is a base of two “fire starters”; medieval or renaissance peasants or castle defenders who will send their flaming spears and firebrands onto attackers that have just had oil poured over them. One of the figures is from Irregular Miniatures and the other is from Wargames Atlantic's Barons War Peasant set. The Warlord Landsknecht supplement includes siege rules for these guys. I rarely use contrast paints but the lurid green has sort of worked but is a bit bright for a peasant. Maybe he stole the smock!

I calculate the points for this posting as follows;

9 x 28mm Ona Bugeisha @ 5pts = 45;  6 x 25mm/28mm Ashigaru @ 5pts = 30; 29 Ikko Ikki peasants @ 5pts = 145 and finally 2 castle fire starters @5pts = 10 pts for a grand total of 230 points.

Well this is quite the pile of figures Graham! The brushwork is fine, but what I enjoy most is the huge assortment of manufactures. I really like a project that can bring such a wide variety of sculptors and castings together under a single umbrella. 

I too would like to attempt the "Sengoku" period of Japan for gaming, but I just can't quite seem to get it going...one day perhaps! Until then, I will vicariously enjoy the efforts of hobbyists like you. Well done!

This is the last of the 28mm Warlord games cavalry I have

 except for a couple of figures I might base be themselves 

even though they are a pretty basic sculpt they still look cool

the banner was just copied off the free banners on the Warlord site

From Millsy: Boo! Hiss! More horrible regicides! Maybe they'll pick up a dose of COVID and stay home instead of chasing the rightful King around with murderous thoughts in their heads. Very nice brushwork all around here Kent and the basing on the generals really sets them off a treat. I like the way you've set up the grazing horse so it looks like it is snacking on the flowers!

 Well surprise surprise another week has sped bye, as I write this.

It is the first of Feb and I almost wonder, is time passing fast simple because of the amount of painting we are doing?, as if we are turning the hands of time with each brush stroke in this post we have a few different figures which I really  enjoyed painting.

We start with a 28mm six horse Perry Miniatures Confederate the gun and Limber plus 3 figures by the gun are from their plastic artillery set the rest are metal. 

After doing the 6 horse limber for the union I was mad enough to decide lets make this one longer and add an artillery piece.

I don't know how often I say it but I do love painting Perry Minis.

Next up we have 4 figures from a peasant set 3D printed by Wargames Atlantic I'm entering these into romance section of the Library and Sarah's cart the Lady with the can of food is for Sarah's cart the rest are part of a love triangle but the green eye of envy has hit.

You cheeky wench you try and use food to steal my man from me well I won't have it, if I can't you you nobody will. I'll blow you and this piece of skirt into the next life Bang bang.

Now with the use of Sarah's cart I'll do the science fiction entry into the library.

We have a lone figure from the doctor who world 28mm Cyberman

We have another couple of pirates from Irregular Miniatures I hope to get a bunch more done before the end of the comp. I really enjoy these so full of character.

Lastly we have the first 3 x 40mm figures these will be entered into the  library under gift shop. They were a gift to me and once painted they will be an unexpected gift back.

There is almost the full set of these by Eureka Miniatures these are a real nostalgia moment, many years ago Eureka miniatures sent me one to paint and display, so when a friend gave these to me just before the comp I was like, I know these and was quite excited. It comes with tables and chairs and animals so should be very cool when they are all done.

It's great to see the Cyberman at last following our chats, and the limber is beautifully done BUT the pick for me is the WA peasants. They're both very well painted and the story you constructed around them actually made me laugh out loud.
