AndrewB - English Bad Guys! Literary! (175 points)

Hello everyone!   This week I completed some generic English bad guys, inspired by the costuming in Braveheart, and matching some mounted figures I painted in a challenge gone by!   

This first batch of 16 are a pack of the Sheriff of Nottingham/Prince John’s men from the literary classical lore of Robin Hood, along with a smaller pack of characters, who you can see in the front.  Looks like we have Guy of Gisborn, King Richard himself(ok, he’s a good guy), Prince John, and finally the depraved Sheriff of Nottingham.  Their twelve generic bad guys have a real flunky, and less organized feeling to them, and I’m a big fan.  On to the next group!

These fellows are certainly more along the lines of generic Norman bad guys a la Ivanhoe, but they should mix fine for generic bad folks in skirmish style gaming, when we’re not going for ultra accuracy, but a fun game in the highlands or Sherwood Forest!   Maybe I’ll get an Aethelstan or Gurm figure together to run alongside some noble Saxons, time will tell!  Quite happy with how the two separate periods of figures work well together, thanks to the unified paint scheme.  Let’s put them together for a group photo! 

I’ll be happy to see them on a table!  As for points this week, there’s 31 28mm minis for 155, plus the Literary Section, for a total of 175pts!  More next week!

Well, we definitely have a lot of "bad guys"....not sure about the literature connection, but these certainly are some pretty famous characters, and I certainly don't have the intellectual credibility to tangle with anything that might be connected to Piers Plowman, so I guess this can work. Very nice brushwork on these associated denizens of Sherwood Forest Andrew - 175 points for your total.

From AndrewB: Artsy and housey Romans and Pirates?(Arthouse)(135pts)

Ladies and Gentlemen, a whole raft of 28mm odd figures here! As a part of my efforts to finish random projects and cover lead, I’ve jumped on some figures that reminded me of some old ‘Arthouse’ sort of movies, namely Caligula and Roman Polanski’s Pirates.  Fortunately all of my figures are clothed and playable!   

First, we have a group of lady pirates, ready to gut some greasy buccaneers attempting to grab some booty! These ladies are a mix of Old Glory and Irregular figures, and the scale matched quite well! I paint my pirate groups in different colors to distinguish loyalties, with red, blue, and green already existing. These ladies will have their own ship, and have thus formed the white crew! If their ship is something you’d like to see painted, let me know. But now, pictures!

Next up, a group of Roman civilians, mostly servant types. If we’re going to compare them to Caligula, it’s got to be close to the beginning of the movie, as  they’ve still got their clothes on   I think these are foundry, but I honestly have no idea. I got them second hand years ago, and cannot recall if the original owner told me the manufacturer!  

I think my favorite out of these folks are this trio, mainly due to the opportunity to splash some extra colors into the mix!

In retrospect this also added 14 females I should have been using to bounce around in Lady Sarah’s awesome limo, but that’s alright.  I’ll look for some others. With this, Superheros is my last studio on the blue level, and then we’re off to the red Director’s Chair!

Points for this post should be 115 for the 23 28mm figures, and 20 for the Arthouse, bringing me to 135! More soon!

Those lady pirates might find themselves comfortable with the Caligula, I guess, even though they seem to have some clothes on. Lots of white and lots of females here.

From Jeff B: Level 1 - Chamber 4 - The Aquifer (25 points)

Seaman McNulty gripped the wheel with white knuckled hands as he changed coarse as commanded. He could see the approaching enemy ships altering course as well. Below him on decks was a hive of activity with Midshipmen ordering crew and gunners to clear decks and prepare to engage the swiftly closing enemy ships.

I rarely mix colors as I find it tedious, difficult to master, and wasteful as I usually don't get to finish up what I mix. However in this case since I knew it was a one off figure I experimented and added an off white color to the tan to make 2 highlight shades for the base color and a light cream to the grey to make 2 highlight shades for his grey trousers.

I believe that this is a dated Old Glory Casting from one of the large resin sailing ship kits, it's quite heavy indeed. The helmsman is a simple and fairly clean casting, nothing extravagant, and is a good basic casting that will do the job well. The legs are a bit thick, but at his station on his ship he looks the business and is a perfectly good wargame model.

I painted this ship about 8 years ago for a Yorktown game we assisted a good friend and clubmate of mine Bill Moreno of Good Ground Miniatures was running for one of our HMGS-South's two Florida cons. The sails are by The Flag Dude and the excellent rigging was done by another long time (41 + years) friend and clubmate Jorge Sanchez Galarraga. If it wasn't for Jorge and his friends letting the little kid play with them in the 70's I may not still be so involved and enamored with our awesome hobby today. Thanks gents!

Nice job on the helmsman - as you say, it is a good, basic wargames figure.
